HERE WE GO AGAIN. IT'S BEEN HARD TO KNOW WHICH WAY TO LOOK WITH THIS JOCKEY'S PREMIERSHIP

By Graham Potter | Friday, July 11, 2025

The Brisbane steward’s room has had something of a revolving door in recent times with top riders nursing the scars after their brush with the law … most notably the two Brisbane Jockey Premiership contenders Angela Jones and Emily Lang.

It’s been something like watching a tennis match … look left and Lang was not only on top, but had been a long-time leader of the premiership. Follow the ball and look right and here was Jones producing a remarkable seven-winner blitz in an eight-day period to go right past Lang to secure a clear premiership lead.

Look left again and Jones smashes into a roadblock in the form of a ten-day suspension … a suspension which was initially delayed with Jones appealing the decision, before the penalty was ratified by the Appeal Board and brought into force.

Look right and here was Lang trying to play catchup. Look left and suddenly, still out of her ground, it is Lang’s turn to pick up a suspension. Again, this suspension ruling came several days after Lang’s alleged offence but, like Jones, she ultimately could not survive the fallout and she was left with an eight-day suspension.

It has been enough to make your head spin, but you just have to keep on watching.

So here we are, twenty days out from the season’s end, with this situation.

Lang is riding at Doomben on Saturday. Jones is not. She is still sidelined.

Lang’s suspension will commence at midnight on July 13 and conclude at midnight on July 21. Jones will be back before Lang returns.

Most important in all of this is the fact that Jones has the score on the board with her current premiership lead standing at four winners, and with an open door of opportunity to nail down the deal about to come her way when she is the one riding while Lang is sidelined.

With Lang’s time out, it looks a real tough ask for Lang to pull this one back … some might say we are reaching match-point … but who knows what other twists and turns might await us over the next three weeks.

Two results are certain though.

At the end of the season, Queensland will have its first female winner of the Brisbane Jockey’s Premiership and Lang will be a runaway winner of the Brisbane Apprentice Jockey’s Premiership with an amazing haul of metropolitan winners (which currently stands at sixty) in her first full season in town.

These are two riders who have earned every respect and who both deserve full credit for the body of work they have produced in what has been an outstanding season for both of them.
