KING OF LIGHT THE HORSE TO BEAT IN THE WA GUINEAS

The unbeaten King Of Light will step up onto a bigger stage when he lines up for the $500 000 Group 2 WA Guineas at Ascot on Saturday.
The striking chestnut son of Earthlight has a perfect record from his four career starts to date, getting the job done on each occasion with some aplomb, even though three of his wins have come by margins of 0.60 lengths and under. His largest winning margin to date has been 1.40 lengths.
Two wins in his first preparation was enough before trainer Daniel Morton gave King Of Light a three-month break from race action and he has since resumed with another brace of wins in the Belgravia Stakes and the Fairetha Stakes, both in Listed company.
The win in the Fairetha Stakes was particularly impressive. After being ticked away on the rail in midfield for much of the running, King Of Light changed gears coming through the 200m mark and produced a sizzling run home to reel in Heeza Phoenix, who had skipped clear by a healthy margin early in the straight.
The fact that Heeza Phoenix was unbeaten in two starts prior to this clash further underlined the merit of King Of Light’s win.
That run in the Fairetha left King Of Light with a neat two-week gap into Saturday’s Guineas, where King Of Light will take on the 1600m trip for the first time.
Speaking after the Fairetha win, Dan Morton indicated that he wasn’t planning to do too much with King Of Light in the buildup to the Guineas.
“He’s a very, very laid-back character,” said Morton. “We’ll be mindful of that.
“He’s probably still carries a bit of condition, but he gets the job done … so, we don’t have to overtax him or anything like that. It will just be a bit of maintenance between now and then.”
Willie Pike, who has been in the saddle for every race and trial of King Of Light, will ride the WA Guineas race favourite on Saturday.
Pike gave his vote of confidence to King Of Light in a one simple sentence.
“I wouldn’t swop him for anyone else!”
