SPYWIRE CAN STRIKE IN THE CANTERBURY SPRINT

By Graham Potter | Thursday, January 1, 2026

The Ciaron Maher trained Spywire could be the value bet in $200 000 Listed Canterbury Sprint which will be contested over 1200m at Randwick on New Year’s day.

The four-year-old son of Trapeze Artist is currently quoted on the third line of betting, buyt he can be expected to be well-primed for this latest assignment as he will be third-up since resuming from three-month break from race action.

Spywire actually was a winner on either side of that layoff, winning a Class 3 Plate at Doomben on August 16 to round off his previous preparation … before making it back-to-back wins in a Benchmark 78 Handicap at Kembla Grange when resuming on November 22.

Spywire has had one run since that winning first-up effort, claiming a notable third place finish in the Magic Millions Wyong Three-Year-Old and Four-Year-Old Stakes over 1200m when coming home only 0.23 lengths behind the winner The Three Hundred and only 0.40 lengths behind the runner-up King Of Roseau.

The Three Hundred, who was winning first-up there, has a Group 3 win behind his name, having won the Winx Guineas at the Sunshine Coast back in July … while King Of Roseau has also tasted glory at Group 3 level, winning the Auroe’s Star at Flemington on August 2 … so his Wyong effort certainly stands Spywire in good stead.

Spywire will be ridden Adam Farragher.

The Canterbury Stakes is an open betting race with the Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott trained The Instructor and the Joe Pride trained King’s Secret currently vying for favouritism at $2.90 and $3.30 respectively.

King’s Secret is a progressive last start track and distance winner who has saluted in five out of his ten starts … a record which includes three wins in his last four starts … while The Instructor, a seven-time winner from eighteen starts, is having his first start since finishing sixth in the Group 1 Stradbroke back in June.
