MADHI GIRL CLAIMS A FOURTH SUCCESSIVE WIN

By Graham Potter | Thursday, January 1, 2026

The Simon Miller trained Madhi Girl made it four wins in-a-row when she claimed a hard-fought victory in the $125 000 Listed Sunner Scorcher over 1000m at Ascot.

Racing first-up after a four-an-a-half month layoff, the chestnut mare justified her $2.20 favouritism, but she and jockey Willie Pike were made to work for victory every stride of the way.

Firstly, a focused effort had to be put in to establish a lead in the cavalry charge that unfolded early in the home straight (Madhi Girl got to the front with 150m left to run) … and then she had to sustain that run in a pressurised finish over the concluding stages to hold that advantage to the line as the third favourite Jaz Session ($8.50), flashed up late threatening to undo all of the good work of Madhi Girl that had gone before.

The daughter of Winning Rupert was brave though and Jaz Session, while closing with every stride, was still only 0.17 lengths behind Madhi Girl at the line.

“We came up with the play after winter that we would give her exactly the amount of time off … and then give her two trials and go straight into this and miss the Carnival,” explained Simon Miller, talking to Racing WA.

“She’s been stakes placed, but now she is a stakes winner.”

Willie Pike was impressed with performance of the four-year-old.

“She really is a ripper,” said Pike. “She is only a little girl, but she is all heart. She has a red-hot crack. It gets you places when they try so hard for you.

“:I was a bit closer than I thought I would be. She sprung the gates really well. It is a funny thing to say, but I nearly got too good a run. I arrived too early, sneaking up and picking up ground a lot sooner than was probably ideal for her, but it was alright … we lasted on the line.”

Madhi Gorl was trainer Simon Miller’s third winner on Perth Cup day, after Amaroo Star and Prospector’s Pick scored wins earlier in the day.
