THE GAMBLING GREEK WINS AGAIN

By Graham Potter | Sunday, February 1, 2026

The Tony and Maddysen Sears training partnership’s placement of The Gambling Greek in a Class 4 Handicap over 1200m at Murwillumbah on February 1 was spot on, allowing the progressive four-year-old to further build his confidence by making it back-to-back wins after previously having taken out a BM68 Handicap over 1200m at Doomben.

Given that last start city win, The Gambling Greek’s was in demand at a starting price of $2.20 and it certainly turned out to be an easy watch for those who jumped on those odds as the son of Russian Revolution was never in danger of defeat, winning by a very comfortable 1.92 length margin.

Ben Looker, who was having his first ride on The Gambling Greek, took the Sears trained runner straight to the lead and then dictated the way the race unfolded to his own advantage.

The $2.80 second favourite Arctic Legend sat less than a length back to The Gambling Greek’s outside, perfectly poised to make a race of it, but when The Gambling Greek led into the home straight, it soon became clear that Looker had been keeping plenty in hand and The Gambling Greek duly extinguished any threat that Arctic Legend posed by slipping away to score what, in essence, was a soft win.

The Gambling Greek is now a four-time winner, with four minor placings, from fifteen starts. He has not finished out of the first three places in his last four starts and has saluted his last two starts by a combined winning margin of 4.60 lengths … very pleasing steps for a horse who hinted at strong potential when he won on debut back in May 2024.
