SAND NOV 13 - STRONG BARRIER TO BOX PERFORMANCE EARNS ZELSNITZ BLACK TYPE WIN

By Taron Clarke | Monday, November 15, 2010

Sandown Hillside, November 13, 2010.
Track - Slow 7. Rail - True. Penetrometer: 5.48.
Race-Tech Stakes (Listed) 3YO Fillies SW+P - 1400m.
Time: 1-26.68. 600m Sectional: 35.96. (Carrying 54kg).
1 Zelsnitz; 2 Palomares; 3 Booklet.
Margins: 4.0L x 0.1L.

Peter Moody’s lightly raced filly Zelsnitz made the jump to Stakes winner at Sandown on Saturday when the daughter of the speedy Snitzel lead all the way to score an easy victory in the Listed Race-Tech Stakes over 1400 metres.

A veteran of only three prior career starts, Zelsnitz was coming off a solid performance behind the impressive Palomares in the Listed Lexus Hybrid Plate on Melbourne Cup Day at Flemington.

On that occasion, the filly jumped away from a wide barrier and kicked clear at the top of the straight only to fold in the final furlong.

With a better run on Saturday, Zelsnitz reversed the form to beat the favourite for the event, Palomares, by a widening four lengths.

Ridden by Moody’s stable rider Luke Nolen, Zelsnitz jumped straight to the front and the pair were never headed.

Favourite Palomares sat outside Zelsnitz throughout the event, but when Nolen gave his mount a little rein the duo raced clear and the favourite could not respond under the urgings of Kerrin McEvoy.

Zelsnitz scored by four lengths over Palomares with a short half head back to Booklet in third place.

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Peter Moody: “She has come along in leaps and bounds.

"She has got a hell of a pedigree and she is closely related to Holy Roman Emperor, so it was very important to get that Stakes win today.

“She has just improved nicely. She drew the outside at Flemington. Bossy (Glen Boss) rode her a treat and nursed her across, but she just had to do too much work.

"With the soft run from the nice gate today it was a better effort.

“She is very new and very raw.

“Bossy surprised me the other day. He got off her and said, ‘this is young Typhoon Tracy’. I said ‘I hope to hell you’re right’.

“She has just got a lot of natural, raw talent, but hopefully we can just harness it and head in the right direction.

“She will have a break now and be back for the back end of the autumn and possibly into Sydney.

“She is owned in Sydney interests and I am sure they would love to see her up that way.”

Jockey Luke Nolen: “It can expose new horses this track … especially the Hillside track because the straight’s so long.

"It’s got the dip and you’re exposed so far from home but, like all of ours, she is pretty fit.

“I let her stride down the dip on the bridle to gain some advantage. She came out fine the other side of it and she put the race beyond doubt pretty quickly.

“Her run the other day at Flemington was good.

“From a nicer gate today she probably ended up with an easier run and I thought she was pretty convincing on the line, so there’s better races in store for her.”

PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Zelsnitz): 8.00 out to 11.00 into 9.00.
Favourite (Palomares): 1.70 out to 1.75 into 1.65. Finished second.

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Stewards acceded to a request from trainer Mr J Conlan to withdraw Glenkinchie due to the downgrade of the track. Glenkinchie was subsequently a late withdrawal at 8.47am.

Serene Tanie jumped away awkwardly and lost ground.

Jalsah, which was restrained in the early stages, commenced to over-race after passing the 1200m and near the 1000m got its head up when being checked after shifting in and away from Offshore Sham and bumping the hindquarters of Volando.

Near the 900m Palomares shifted out forcing Booklet wider on the track and as a result Booklet was then restrained to avoid covering extra ground with no cover.

Serene Tanie raced wide without cover.

Rounding the home turn approaching the 500m Offshore Sham was tightened for room when contact was made to the hindquarters of Ain’tnofallenstar which then shifted out slightly before being straightened.

As a result of this Offshore Sham also made contact to the hindquarters of Jalsah which was racing to its outside and it too got unbalanced.

C Williams reported at scale that Riverina’s Girl did not handle the track conditions today.
