A TASTE OF CAVIAR FOR HOLLY NOTTLE AT SANDOWN
By Graham Potter | Wednesday, April 15, 2026
A dual headline act came out of Heat 10 of the National Apprentices Race Series at Sandown on Wednesday.
The lightly raced Persian Caviar won the race to claim her second victory in only four career starts in which she has never finished out of the placings.
That’s promising form in anyone’s language … but when you are a daughter of the famous Black Caviar … as Persian Caviar is … with each passing success, that promise can build an expectation that perhaps offers hope of better things to come.
Certainly Peter Moody, who trains Persian Caviar in partnership with Katherine Colemen, will know all about the family quirks of the Written Tycoon mare having taken Black Caviar through her magnificent, unbeaten career which encompassed twenty-five memorable wins.
So, there’s your headline number one.
For headline number two you can write in the name of Holly Nottle, the young rider from Western Australia who partnered Persian Caviar to victory.
It was a big win for Nottle away from home. It would have been a thrill a minute for her, going out to get instructions from the Moody camp … getting on a daughter of Black Caviar … putting her skills to test on a track where she has never ridden before … and winning, all rolled into a perfect package on the day … but the win could possibly be more far reaching than that.
Nottle’s performance in the saddle at Sandown would have been eye-catching, even if most trainers and owners might have been watching how Persian Caviar fared, first and foremost, rather than how the jockey was doing … but when they link the result to Nottle’s quite outstanding record, it is fair to say you would expect the young rider will attract a lot of interest.
Nottle, who is indentured to Greg Kersley, had her first race ride in May last year. That’s only eleven months ago and yet this was Nottle’s one hundred and seventeenth race win.
As you would have surmised from that, the wins came very quickly … so quickly in fact that Nottle created a landmark achievement by reaching the total of one hundred winners faster than any jockey has done before in her home state … the new record being 291 days.
Her first winner came on June 19, 2025. She brought up her one hundredth win on March 15, 2026.
Nottle currently sits in second place … only behind Willie Pike … in the Western Australia State jockey Premiership … and in fifth place in the Perth Jockeys Metropolitan Premiership.
Now the win at Sandown has given Nottle greater exposure.
Notwithstanding all of her other achievements, chances are this win might remain as important a win for her as it was memorable … and will serve her very well moving forward.
