By Graham Potter | Thursday, April 30, 2026
Apprentice Jace McMurray has been flying in recent times, to the extent that he currently leads the Brisbane Apprentice Jockeys’ Premiership … three wins ahead of defending champion Emily Lang … but he had a day at Ipswich yesterday which he will want to forget.
The young rider had two rides, one on a beaten favourite, before being stood down by stewards prior to the seventh race following his unfortunate actions in the scales area at the Ipswich track.
As per the official steward’s report on the day …
“Apprentice J. McMurray pleaded guilty to a charge of misconduct pursuant to AR 115(1)(a) in that prior to the running of Race 7 in the scales area, Apprentice J. McMurray when directed to reweigh by Clerk of Scales S. Fletcher he threw his saddle in his direction of S. Fletcher and used profanities when speaking to Mr Fletcher.
Apprentice J. McMurray license to ride in races was suspended for a period of fourteen (14) days however, acting under the provisions of 283(5), stewards wholly suspended seven (7) days for a period of two years should Apprentice J. McMurray does not reoffend under this rule. Commencing midnight Saturday 2 May 2026 concluding midnight Saturday 9 May 2026.
Apprentice J. McMurray pled guilty pursuant to AR 232(b) in that in the scales area prior to the running of Race 7, failed to comply with a direction of Clerk of Scales S. Fletcher and Steward J. Williamson when directed to weigh with race colours.
Apprentice J. McMurray was fined $800 of which Stewards acting under the provisions of 283(5) wholly suspended $400 for a period of 2 (two) years should Apprentice J. McMurray does not reoffend under this rule,’
Also, ‘Stewards adjourned an inquiry regarding Jockey B. Lerena and Apprentice J. McMurray regarding the authenticity of a vest to a date and time to be fixed.’
For McMurray … clearly a day to put behind him.
