DOOM JAN 4 - CHEERS! ONE GREEN BOTTLE LANDS A SOLID FIRST-UP WIN

By Graham Potter | Wednesday, January 4, 2012

Doomben, Janauary 4, 2012.
Track - Good 3; Rail - out 6m (1000 - 375m); out 4m (remainder).
Maiden Plate (Three-year-olds) - 1350m.
1 One Green Bottle; 2 Win For Layla; 3 Barely A Fib: 4 Doreboy.
Time: 1-19.53. Last 600: 34.25.

Jockey Chris Munce’s customary winner at the meeting, usually there is more than one, came aboard the Kelly Schweida trained One Green Bottle, who was resuming after six months away from the action.

The son of Bradbury’s Luck had improved markedly from his debut run to his second outing when having only two outings first time in. There was obviously natural improvement in that from one run to the next, but the step up in distance there from 1030m to 1200m was also obviously to his liking.

One Green Bottle stepped out fresh here, this time over 1350m.

He jumped well and Munce settled the gelding in third spot, some two lengths off the front-running Barely A Fib in the early part.

One Green Bottle was then urged forward approaching the first turn and he moved into second spot, sitting three-and-a-quarter lengths back on the outside of Barely A Fib. These two runners held their positions until the home turn and, on straightening, One Green Bottle immediately applied pressure as he took the race to Barely A Fib.

Barely A Fib, in spite of running at double figure odds, was no easy target though and he showed plenty of fight in the first half of the straight but One Green Bottle had his measure by the 200m mark.

Win For Layla, who had tracked One Green Bottle to the home turn and chased hard all the way down the straight, also went past Barely A Fib and was closing on the winner on the line, but One Green Bottle, who had dome all of the hard work early in the straight, still had more than enough in hand to complete a solid first-up victory.

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Kelly Schweida: “Last time in he went well. He was due to make his comeback last week.” (This was One Green Bottle’s first run since July 6).

“He had a few little issues. He had a little temperature on the Monday, so we scratched him. He seemed to be fine that afternoon. That’s the way it goes. It went away good. We’ve done a couple of bloods since and he’s been fine.

“He probably should have won his last start. He just drew bad and that cost him, but he’s got the win on the board now.”

Jockey Chris Munce: “Yeah, there was a slight hiccup. He jumped out the other day and didn’t excite us at all. Probably went below the level we have come to expect from him.

“Obviously that was over a week ago now. He’s had time to recover.

“He tried really well today. I still don’t think he was a hundred percent today, but he did a good job.”

PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (One Green Bottle): 2.50 out to 3.20.
Favourite (One For Layla): 3.00 in to 2.20.

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Elvstroem Rose (J. Byrne) jumped away awkwardly and lost ground.

When the pace slowed near the 800m Balmarossa (N. Thomas) had to be steadied from the heels of Barely A Fib (P. Hammersley). Posen (S. Galloway) which was trailing Balmarossa also had to be steadied in consequence.

Wishmore (App B. Looker) laid in in the straight placing its rider at a disadvantage when attempting to fully test the horse.

Approaching the 100m Fascia (R. McMahon) had to be steadied when disappointed for a run between Cossotto (R. Wiggins) and Posen, which shifted in. Fascia was then obliged to alter course to obtain clear running.

Win For Layla (App T. Bell), Doreboy (D. Whitmore) and Von Baden (K. Fujii) all raced wide throughout the event.

A post race veterinary examination of Reigning Magic (J. Taylor) revealed the colt to be shin sore in both fore-legs. Trainer J. Walk will have to provide a veterinary certificate of fitness prior to Reigning Magic again racing.
