DUBAI DEC 8 - CANWINN TOO STRONG IN MEYDAN FEATURE

By Dubai Racing Club | Thursday, December 8, 2011

Canwinn was the impressive winner of the featured 1600m Attijari Points Rewards Program at Meydan Racecourse on Thursday evening, on a quality card kindly sponsored by Commercial Bank Of Dubai.

Ridden by James Doyle for trainer Dhruba Selvaratnam in the colours of his main patron, His Highness Ahmed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the five-year-old was repeating his course and distance victory of the previous Meydan meeting and was always travelling well under Doyle.

The pair cruised into contention 400m out before storming clear in the final 200m to win comfortably.

Doyle said: "That was quite impressive and he has clearly improved from that first win. I was pretty confident from a long way out as I was going so well and he carried me into the race effortlessly. When I asked him to go he picked up very well and it is great reward for the horse who has been so consistent for Dhruba and the team."

The 1200m Al Dana Wealth Management was won by seasonal debutant Reynaldothewizard who had also won over the same course and distance on his return to action in 2010.

That was in a handicap though as was his subsequent 1400m victory on this night last year.

Richard Mullen, who was in the saddle, said: "I actually thought he would need the run so am pleasantly surprised. This is his absolute minimum trip and we definitely feel he is better over 1400m and he should stay 1600m so it is a great start to his season."

The only Purebred Arabian contest was the opening Mazrat Al Ruwayah prep, over 1600m in which Richard Hills scored a commanding victory on the Doug Watson-trained Kandar Du Falgas in the silks of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum.

Hills said: "These conditions really suit him and he did it nicely. We will be back for the Mazrat Al Ruwayah itself hoping to repeat his win in that of last season."

Trainer Abdulla bin Huzaim was in double form with Fervent Prince initiating the brace in the 1600m CBD World MasterCard handicap, defying joint top-weight under Carlos Sandoval.

It was a good performance giving weight to all bar one of his 13 rivals and the trainer said: "He is a horse we like a lot and hope to get a (Dubai World Cup) Carnival place with him. He is rated 90 before this win so with luck will qualify for the Carnival."

Carlos Sanchez was on the trainer's second winner, Submariner, who landed the concluding 1900m Attijari Al Islami to complete a memorable evening for the trainer.

Champion Trainer Ali Rashid Al Raihe rarely leaves Meydan empty handed and Ahmed Ajtebi steered his Street Act to land the spoils in the 1900m maiden, the Al Dana Visa Infinite Card.

It was the four-year-old’s 10th career start but he had always threatened to break his maiden and Ajtebi explained: "This horse deserved that as he has run plenty of good races in defeat. The trainer and his team have always known he had a race in him and it is nice to be on board when he managed it."
