DOOM JULY 18 - GYPSY PEARL IN TEN LENGTH ROMP

By Graham Potter | Thursday, July 19, 2012

Doomben, July 18, 2012.
Track - Heavy 8. Rail - out 4m.
Three-year-old Maiden Plate (Set Weights) - 1020m.
1 Gypsy Pearl; 2 Show Coast; 3 Fortunate Fury; 4 Bjorn.
Time: 1-01.55. Last 600: 35.83.
Margins: 10.00; 1.30.

The Michael Lakey trained Gypsy Pearl turned in an eye-catching performance at Doomben yesterday when she lined her field without any undue effort to score by a ten length margin.

The Danzero filly was appearing first-up following a six month break from race action and, while some question mark can be raised about the quality of the opposition, any horse that wins by ten lengths without getting out of second gear is certainly well worth a second glance.

That was the case with Gypsy Pearl yesterday. Jockey Glen Colless ensured the three-year-old used enough gate speed to be able to settle in a close-up third position with a drop on the front-running duo of Hidden Starlet and Dangerous Edition.

Colless wasted time in easing his mount up to the leaders, three-wide, approaching the turn and then angled even slightly further out on straightening to find the better going.

The way the last 300m unfolded it wouldn’t have mattered what part of the track Gypsy Pearl was racing on. She was getting through the ground beautifully and was proving far too strong for her rivals who she proceeded to embarrass in the run to the line.

Still under a hard hold, with Colless hardly moving in the saddle, Gypsy Pearl steadily increased her lead with each passing stride, an effort which ultimately brought her a victory by a rare double figure margin.

Gypsy Pearl is a three-year-old brown filly.
She is owned by Narish Holdings Pty Ltd (Mgr J T Hutchins) who also bred her.
This was Gypsy Pearl’s first career win. She was placed in two of her three previous starts. This win took her stake earnings to $11950 from four starts.

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Michael Lakey: “That was pretty impressive. She was impressive in her trial before as well.

“She carried no weight in the trial. She had Beau in the saddle and was only carrying 44kg. She did just want to lay out in the trial as she came around the turn … but it was a real good trial leading into the race.

“She was wanting to run off the track a bit then and Glen (Colless) said she was looking to do that again today, but that was only her fourth start so she is still learning.

“She hasn’t had a bad run yet. She certainly showed up well enough in her first prep and the form out of those runs have come up pretty good. She got beat by a couple of lengths at Ipswich and the winner there (Gatineau River) came out and won its next two starts after that. I think the horse that beat her at the Gold Coast (Millyen) has also won twice again since then, so she did run in a couple of good form races in that first prep.

“Going into this race, looking at some of the other Maiden form, she was always going to be hard to beat. Didn’t quite count on her winning by ten lengths though.

“That’s left me scratching my head a bit now about where I will take her next. I think she will be competitive on a Saturday, but we’ve only got one more week or so of her being a three-year-old and I can’t see her backing up in a week, so we’ll just have to take it as it comes.”

“Gypsy Pearl is the first foal of the dam, Sunny Paradise. That makes her a half sister to the two-year-old Belvedere Blast that had its first start for Desleigh Forster on Saturday.”

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Trainer B. Hill was fined $100 for failing to declare apprentice R. Myers as the rider of Pachino Girl by the prescribed time.

Eurasian Girl was a late scratching at 12.32 p.m. due to the track downgrade to Heavy 8.

Kiss ‘N' Easy (K. Matheson) was slow to begin.

Ta Rara Boom De AY (S. Drake) over-raced and threw its head in the air when being restrained in the early stages.

Miss Mary Ann (A. Pattillo) raced wide throughout.

Pachino Girl (R. Myers) hung out for a major part of the race and as a result raced extremely wide. A post-race veterinary examination of Pachino Girl revealed no abnormalities. Trainer B. Hill was advised that a warning would be placed on the filly.

After passing the 600m Hidden Starlet (D. Robinson) commenced to lay out. Show Coast (T. Harrison), which was trailing, attempted to improve to the inside of Hidden Starlet where there was insufficient room. Near the 500m Hidden Starlet shifted in slightly which resulted in Show Coast becoming awkward on that runner's heels for some distance.
