SCST JULY 29 - TOEY TOUGHS IT OUT TO END HER FOUR-YEAR-OLD SEASON IN WINNING STYLE

By Graham Potter | Monday, July 30, 2012

Sunshine Coast, July 29, 2012
Track - Slow 6; Rail - out 3m.
Class 2 Handicap - 1400m.
1 Toey; 2 Loupets; 3 Rogertheredneck; 4 For Mia.
Time: 1-26.77. Last 600: 37.17.
Margins: 0.20; 1.00.

The Michael Lakey trained Toey (10-1) rounded off her four-year-old season with a spirited win when she outgunned the more fancied Loupets in a pressurized chase to the line in the last race at the Sunshine Coast on Sunday.

The chestnut mare shrugged off her last start disappointment in emphatic fashion as she overcame several obstacles on her way to her third career victory. Toey could find no easy passage for much of the running … being held up in traffic on the home turn and for part of the home straight, but both rider and horse then tenaciously forced their way into galloping room. Once there, they quickly ranged into contention.

The $3.50 favourite Loupets was still a major obstacle though. The Darryl Hansen trained gelding was bidding for a double and appeared to have success within his grasp when Toey’s determination saw the mare close ground with a flourish.

With a favourable 3kg pull at the weights, Alexandra Kitson made sure she brought every bit of that advantage into play as she pushed a willing Toey out at full stretch in the closing stages to move pass Loupets when it mattered most and go on to claim a 0.20 length victory.

Toey is a four-year-old bay mare (Tobougg - Jet Bound)
She is owned by D E Garing, A M McFarlane, M R Quinn, Miss N L Quinn, J A Nelson, W P Burt, S A Garing, J A Garing, Mrs J L Lakey and Miss El Sundell.
This was Toey’s third career win from thirteen career starts.
This win took her stake earnings to $29950

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Michael Lakey: “She was a bit of a flop the other day. She jumped out and wanted to hang almost as soon as she hit the ground. She’s done that before. She’s done that a couple of times.

“Before that she won really well at Toowoomba … and her next run (when second to Ninth Duke at the Sunshine Coast) was a good run.

“When we took her home after that last run we couldn’t find anything wrong with her. She’s worked well. Little Beau (Appo) declared her when he galloped her. He said, ‘mate … we'll win’!

“I can’t believe the way things are going right now. The stable is on quite a roll.”

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Royal Crusader (A. Hearn) began awkwardly.

Will'n'gus (J. Taylor), Lomu (P. Holmes) and Tizzy Lizzy (T. Harrison) all raced wide throughout.

Toey (A. Kitson) was held up for clear running rounding the home turn and in the early stages of the straight and leaving the 300m when endeavouring to obtain clear running shifted out and bumped Rogertheredneck (T. Huxham).

Queen Commander (A. Butler) had difficulty obtaining clear running from the 400m until leaving the 200m.

R. McMahon (Whispering Death) was fined $100 for failing to ride his mount out to the finish of the race.
