DOOM MAY 18: 1-2 FOR WALLER IN THE DOOMBEN CUP

By Graham Potter | Monday, May 20, 2013

DOOMBEN, MAY 18, 2013.

Track - Dead 4. Rail - 1.5m 900m - 375m. True Remainder.
Kirks DOOMBEN CUP (Group 1) - 2000m.
1 Beaten Up; 2 Foreteller; 3 Secret Admirer; 4 Manighar
Time 2-04.34. Last 600: 35.78
Margins: 0.80; 0.10.

DAVID FOWLER’S RACE WRAP:

“Beaten Up … he’s beaten up his rivals.

“Jockey Leith Innes gave him a perfect run. He was there. He charged at the right time and he swept to the lead at the 50m and moved clear to win by a length.

“A European import having only his fourth Australian start … this was Beaten Up’s eleventh career start and it was his fourth win.

“Chris Waller who has been in absolutely devastating form in the Sydney ranks. He is a regular visitor to our Winter Carnival and he struck pay-dirt big-time here with Beaten Up.

“Foreteller ran to the line gamely to finish second and give Waller the big race quinella.”

WINNER FEEDBACK:

TRAINER CHRIS WALLER:

“First and second. That’s not bad.

“Jim Cassidy (rider of the second placed Foreteller) was just giving me a bit of stick there … saying, bloody Chris Waller.

“The winner has been a very promising horse in the UK prior to coming out here. He just lost his way a touch.

“Once those horses have got that high potential or good ability it’s not hard to get it back into them. I think by bringing them out to Australia, where there are different training conditions, it gives them a new lease on life.

“I think that is what has happened with him.

“We knew he had potential and it was a matter a harnessing it. He was over-racing early.

“He can get a little stirred up. He was very relaxed before the race today. It’s more so in the race when he gets up over the bridle he can just over-race a touch. He didn’t today. He didn’t get his head up once.

“He was aided by a good ride. He was three back the fence and he was in the strong in the straight.

“Group 1 racing … it doesn’t matter where you are, whether it is Moonee Valley or Flemington, the straight is always long. Obviously the jockeys take off earlier on a shorter straight, but often rides do win Group 1 races.

“It was a very good ride from Leith Innes today and he’s done the job.

‘The Brisbane Cup is unlikely, but we honestly haven’t thought about anything after today. We just wanted to see how he performed.”

* Beaten Up was only confirmed a Doomben Cup runner after the barrier draw. He drew barrier one. Waller insisted he would have gone to Scone had he drawn badly in Brisbane.

**Beaten Up gave Waller his seventh Group 1 victory for the season, putting him two ahead of Gai Waterhouse and three in front of Peter Moody and Peter Snowden.

***On the day following the Doomben Cup another European stayer Instrumentalist pushed Chris Waller closer to claiming the record for city winners in a season.

****Instrumentalist’s victory at Warwick Farm on the Sunday following the Doomben Cup took Waller’s extraordinary season tally in Sydney to 139.5 winners. With nine-and-a-half weeks of the season remaining, Waller now has Gai Waterhouse and Tommy Smith’s joint record of 156 winners firmly in his sights.

PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:

Winner (Beaten Up): 9.00 steady.
Favourite (Foreteller): 4.20 in to 4.00. Finished second.
