DOOM MAY 18: SIR MOMENTS IMPRESSES WHEN RUNNING DOWN EL TORANADO IN THE DALRELLO STAKES

By Graham Potter | Monday, May 20, 2013

DOOMBEN, MAY 18, 2013

Track - Dead 5. Rail - 1.5m 900m - 375m. True Remainder.
Bulmers DALRELLO (Listed) - 1200m.
1 Sir Moments; 2 El Toranado; 3 Chosen Idol; 4 Skytastic.
Time: 1-11.52. Last 600: 35.27.
Margins: 0.80; 0.50.

DAVID FOWLER’S RACE WRAP:

“Sir Moments won the first … bouncing back to the Sir Moments we saw on debut in Decemeber last year.

“With the first-up run under his belt and with blinkers on today and appreciating having had a run back from a break, Sir Moments found the line strongly to beat El Toranado, who led and fought strongly.

“He has only had the three starts. This was his first win.

“We saw him in the Phelan Ready in the summer of last year where he ran on home into second place. He was tipped out after that. Resumed in the Ken Russell where he finished midfield, but he has delivered a much sharper performance today.

“Third placed Chosen Idol had his chance as did Skytastic in fourth.”

WINNER FEEDBACK:

TRAINER STEVEN O’DEA:

“He was much sharper today. I think the blinkers have definitely switched him on.

“At the same time, he was also able to find a little bit of room. The other day at the Gold Coast every time he started to get wound up, he sort of ran into a dead-end, but things worked well today.

“He was going to need some luck just after they straightened but Michael (Cahill) was able to find a run on him and he let down well.

“He is a big enough horse to be able to push his way through if necessary but, at the same time, he needs to have the opportunity to roll into it. He is not the sort of horse to spring off the mark.

“As I say, it worked alright today. He got the run and he did a good job to run them down because they only went steady early on.

“He’ll go into a Listed race at Eagle Farm in two weeks’ time now … and then a week later into the J J Atkins.

“He won’t have any problems with the 1600m. The further the better.”

JOCKEY MICHAEL CAHILL:

“His first-up run at the Gold Coast was a bit inconclusive.

“He drew out. He was at sea going to the gates and he raced that way. He got back. He got caught up on the fence. He wasn’t quick enough to get off the fence when I had an opportunity to do so, so I had to stay there then and ride him for luck and he kept getting disappointed for runs.

“So the result was inconclusive. We couldn’t get a good guide on how he went. Steven o’dea said he was going to apply blinkers.

“I came and rode him here in work last Tuesday morning. I thought he worked as good as any two-year-old I’ve ridden. Really top class work it was, but you just don’t know if they will carry that through to the race.

“He is still not quite there. He was wanting to ease up at the line. Switching off … he was switching off a bit too much.

“As soon as he joined that leader he wanted to prick his ears and ease up … and even though I was riding him with the whip, he still was probably going about eighty-five precent, I reckon, in the run to the line.

“I think he will be better next start. I don’t know if the penny will drop completely but I think he will be better now that he has had these couple of runs behind him.

“He is crying out for more ground. The mile of the J J Atkins at Eagle Farm … I’m not one hundred percent certain he will run the mile at this moment, but I think he will, but that big track … the Eagle Farm track … will play in his favour.”

PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:

Winner (Sir Moments): 2.10 out to 2.40.
The winner was the favourite.

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:

ARCHITECT (J. Byrne) jumped very awkwardly and shifted out, severely hampering OUTSTRIP (N. Hall). EL TORANADO (R. McMahon) and CHOSEN IDOL (G. Colless) made contact at the start.

NOT SO SOBER (P. Hammersley) jumped away awkwardly and shifted out, bumping SIR MOMENTS (M. Cahill), which in turn shifted out and made contact with the hind quarters of SKYTASTIC (M. Rodd).

KAYNO (T. Bell) commenced to over-race approaching the 800m and had to be restrained from the heels of SKYTASTIC. KAYNO continued to over-race in the middle stages.

ARCHITECT over-raced in the early and middle stages when racing three wide without cover.

Near the 300m, SIR MOMENTS, when angling for a run between ARCHITECT and CHOSEN IDOL, shifted out slightly, coming into contact with CHOSEN IDOL.

CASINO BELLE (C. Munce) raced three wide throughout.

When questioned, P. Hammersley stated that NOT SO SOBER raced very greenly and when placed under pressure approaching the home turn failed to respond and weakened in the home straight. A post race veterinary examination of NOT SO SOBER failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.
