DOOM JULY 13 – CAPE KIDNAPPERS’ CLASS CARRIES HIM THROUGH. HAS NOW WON SIX OUT OF EIGHT STARTS

By Graham Potter | Monday, July 15, 2013

DOOMBEN, JULY 13, 2013.
Track – Slow 6; Rail – True.
Open Handicap – 1010m.
1 CAPE KIDNAPPERS; 2 Buckmoore; 3 All That; 4 Huckleberry Dane.
Time: 58.88; Last 600: 34.54.
Margins: 0.10; 2.30.

CAPE KIDNAPPERS is owned by G T Thoroughbreds (Mgr. Grant-Taylor), R J & Mrs B J Zuttion & A J & Mrs A C Havig. The colt was bred by Mr A Grant-Taylor.

Cape Kidnappers, a lightly raced five-year-old, has won six out of his eight starts (with two second placings) for current stake earnings of $156 550. He remains unbeaten on good, dead and slow going.

DAVID FOWLER’S RACE WRAP:

“That was a terrifying sixty seconds for favourite backers.

“Things just didn’t go Cape Kidnappers’ way from that gate. In a small field he was out four wide … that’s the closest he saw. Despite that tough trip he got the upper in the straight and was set to score but you could see Buckmoore start to flash late and it was just the bob of the heads that saw Cape Kidnappers get the verdict.

“So favourite backers had two points of concern during the running. Being wide all the way was one and then Cape Kidnappers had to stave off that late challenge from Buckmoore. As they hit the line only a half-head split them … but Cape Kidnappers delivered in the end as his class pulled him through!”

WINNER FEEDBACK:

TRAINER KELLY SCHWEIDA:

“That was stressful.

“It was quite unexpected to see him caught that wide. In the circumstances he has done a super job. I think it’s quite incredible really … and he has run time on a track that is still a bit rain affected.

“But probably the best thing is the way he guts it out. You know he had every right to pull up but he kept going. It was a really good effort I thought.

“We’ll think about where we go next.

“I said to the owners, look … his legs have been really good. We don’t want to tax him too much. Whether he has one more now or even goes for a break, I think his legs are as good as they have ever been.

“Possibly another little break will help him settle into full flight. He has only had three runs this time in so he wouldn’t have to have long off but, as I said, we will still decide whether he has one more run this time or not.

“It’s all about his legs!”

JOCKEY JIM BYRNE:

“I actually thought I would be up outside All That, but he just doesn’t have that sort of tempo anymore.

“Kelly (Schweida) did pre-warn me that he may take a bit to get going. Even for the first 100m I was still trying to get him on the bridle.

“You can’t really go back in 1000m races … especially around here (Doomben). At Eagle Farm it is not so much of a problem. So we did it the tough way and the result just shows you the class of the horse.

“He’s probably looking for the 1200 now and possibly beyond, although I don’t think he’ll go too much further than the six furlong. 1300 I wouldn’t think would be too much of a problem for him.

“He wants to race. He is a class animal and it took a class animal to win that in those circumstances today. It is just a really good horse. He is pure class.

“The first time I rode him I earmarked him as a potential superstar. He has spent a lot of time on the side-line. Imagine what he could do if he didn’t have any problems.”

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:

As G .Colless was to be overweight, A. Spinks was substituted as the rider of FAR DOOLEY. G. Colless was fined $200.

Approaching the first turn, BUCKMOORE (R. Murray) had to be steadied when momentarily tightened for room by HUCKLEBERRY DANE (C. Munce), which laid in away from FAR DOOLEY (A. Spinks).

Upon straightening, FAR DOOLEY, which was tiring, was momentarily tightened for room between BUCKMOORE (R. Murray), which shifted out around the heels of HUCKLEBERRY DANE to obtain clear running, and CAPE KIDNAPPERS (J. Byrne), which shifted in. FAR DOOLEY then commenced to hang in when tiring and continued to do so for the remainder of the event.

CAPE KIDNAPPERS raced wide throughout.

BUCKMOORE lost its near-fore plate in running.
