DOOM JULY 13 – TUSKEGEE HAWK SWOOPS FROM THE CLOUDS TO SNARE A LAST GASP VICTORY

By Graham Potter | Monday, July 15, 2013

DOOMBEN, JULY 13, 2013.
Track – Slow 6; Rail – True.
Benchmark 85 Handicap – 2100m.
1 TUSKEGEE HAWK; 2 Clangor; 3 Flying Home; 4 Danagaze.
Time: 2-13.36; Last 600: 35.44.
Margins: 0.10; 0.80.

TUSKEGEE HAWK (4 b m Black Hawk – Cosi Fan Tutte) is owned by the Triumphant Syndicate.

This was Tuskegee Hawk’s fifth win from nineteen starts and it took her stake earnings total to $127 900. Four of her five wins have come on slow or heavy going.

DAVID FOWLER’S RACE WRAP:

“Tuskegee Hawk charged at Clangor and he got in. It was a photo-finish but there was a margin there for Tuskegee Hawk … a nose, so it was the barest possible margin.

“Tuskegee Hawk, who was a late pick-up mount for Chris Munce with Eddie Wilkinson being stood down, has been out of the winning list for some time but today she sprinted like a gazelle down the outside to get the money.

“She was with the cat-catchers at the turn but she finished hard to nose out Clangor ahead of the third placed Flying Home, who was in the unusual role of leader.

“The 2-17.36 will go down as a new class record.”

WINNER FEEDBACK:

TRAINER LEN TRELOAR:

“I did say to Chris (Munce) beforehand that nothing has gone right for her this preparation. I said she has been working well … going well … and I just said ride her patiently and she’ll be strong at the finish.

“This filly doesn’t come good until she gets to this sort of distance. As a say she just had no luck working into it in her recent starts. Things worked out better today and it is just nice to have a horse in the stable that does handle a wet track.”

JOCKEY CHRIS MUNCE:

“I think she was pretty fit today.

“At the end of the day it was a good gallop … a good, solid gallop for most of the race.

“Like I said, she was pretty fit. She ran it out strong. The last bit of the race was her best part.”

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:

As K. Matheson was to be overweight, A. Allen was substituted as the rider of CLANGOR. K. Matheson was fined $200.

Approaching the 200m, FRETON (P. Schmidt) was momentarily held up for clear running between DANAGAZE (S. Payne) and HANDSOME DANE (B. Stewart) when both horses shifted ground slightly.

B. Richardson, rider of I GOTTA FEELING, was admonished and advised that she must refrain from using her whip on horses that are out of contention.

J. Byrne reported that it was not his intention to lead on FLYING HOME, however when he took up a position outside HOW FAIRDINKUM (P. Hammersley), his mount raced fiercely and when it became evident that P. Hammersley did not wish to lead, he progressed forward and assumed the leading position.

B. Stewart, rider of HANDSOME DANE, was $200 for using his whip more than 5 times prior to the 100m.
