MY CALL - ATLANTIC JEWEL MADE MY DAY

By David Fowler | Tuesday, September 3, 2013

David Fowler is the principal thoroughbred caller for Radio TAB. David, who is a keen form student and punter, has enjoyed a lifetime involvement in the racing media. His personal blog, ‘My Call’, appears exclusively on HRO.

Atlantic Jewel took every racing enthusiast on the ride of their life as the sun began to set last Saturday.

The Melbourne Racing Club's game plan to run their feature races as the last on the card is a clear winner as we waited in anticipation for the mare's return to the track after a 16 month absence.

These are watershed races. We expect her to win but we won't be totally surprised if she is beaten first-up and we won't be totally surprised if she goes badly, her injury-enforced lay off playing its hand.

Basically everyone had their fingers crossed and hoped.

We held our collective breath during a wide trip but when her surge towards the lead happened it was a very special moment in racing. She was back!

Imagine the emotion bottled up inside of Mark Kavanagh and Michael Rodd. Its unleashing post race was compulsory viewing.

The whole scenario was a great way to END the day.

Fatcs and figures weren't brilliant in the Memsie.

That's worth keeping in mind when doing a report card on Atlantic Jewel in the cold light of day.

She travelled wide is slow sectionals before sailing away up the running to winning in a tick over 1:24. Nothing special.

Very similar to Puissance De Lune's tradesmanlike effort a fortnight earlier.

But Atlantic Jewel's comeback was more than a first-up run in a spring campaign.

It allowed a potentially wonderful racing story unfold and breathe further life into the months ahead.

The Brisbane Racing Club Young Members Association has a good plan in mind.

Sensing syndication is the way to go to making ownership affordable, they plan to develop the idea with BRC members in the next few months.

A package of horses could race under their syndicate banner in their own race colours.

A step in the right direction.

There was the expected cry from some that Masaraki should have been declared a non-runner and not disqualified after Luke Tarrant weighed in light at Ipswich last Friday.

I remind them once again that if it was made a non-runner, there would be deductions on the payouts of the legitimate placegetters.

Why should punters on those horses be penalised for someone else's error?

It seems some of my recent blogs have mentally challenged the team at letsgohorseracing.com.au.

So much so they declined to put up any content of "The Bad" for Doomben races last Saturday because, in their words. "the suck up and survive crew" will have to find something original to write about.

I recently challenged the opinions of their website regarding the state of Brisbane racing and the role the Eagle Farm track played in a recent meeting.

Their opinions were generalised and not totally supported by fact. In my opinion.

This is the website that has loudly proclaimed its right to an opinion and its criticism of Queensland's racing mainstream media.

Apparently it's OK unless someone else does it!

Looking forward to calling the Cairns Amateurs this weekend. Will have all the news on next week's blog.
