MY CALL - FIORENTE HEADING FOR COX PLATE GLORY

By David Fowler | Tuesday, October 22, 2013

David Fowler is the principal thoroughbred caller for Radio TAB. David, who is a keen form student and punter, has enjoyed a lifetime involvement in the racing media. His personal blog, ‘My Call’, appears exclusively on HRO.

Fiorente will win this Saturday's Cox Plate barring bad luck.

As much as $12 was offered on fixed odds trading in the past month but he has now established himself around the $6 mark as the second or third favourite behind Atlantic Jewel and Its A Dundeel.

I have reservations about Atlantic Jewel at 2000m in the pressure cooker environment of a Cox Plate and Its A Dundeel's hoof injury has given him the less than ideal preparation he needs for this race.

And how many more excuses can be offered for Puissance De Lune? Honestly, Caulfield Guineas winner Long John is making up the numbers.

Get your Fiorente bank on Friday night by backing Samaready in the Manikato. Her Moir Stakes demolition only has to be reproduced to see her win again.

BREAKING NEWS!

Robert Hickmott trained Fawkner to win the Caulfield Cup.

Nary a mention on all forms of mainstream media in the wake of the big race. Even when his name was brought up, Lloyd Williams' son Nick deflected to the efforts of others in the stable.

Honestly, what goes on here?

And did anyone interpret what Nick Hall said as he blurted down John Letts' microphone in the traditional post race interview before careering off.

Latitude given for youthful exuberance but …

The Queensland presence during the Melbourne Spring Carnival deserves a strong mention.

Trainers Liam Birchley (Missy Longstocking, Liesele), Rob Heathcote (Solzenhitsyn, Fire Up Fifi) and Tony Gollan (Spirit Of Boom) have done us proud.

Fire Up Fifi was an eye-catcher in the 1400m Tristarc. The Myer Classic at Flemington is not beyond her grasp.

Go girl!

Thought it worth comparing some numbers on acceptances at Saturday city meetings in October compared to 2012.

October 6 (2012) / October 5 (2013): 89 /72 but nine races compared to eight in 2012.

October 13 (2012) / October 12 (2013): 97 / 72

October 20 (2012) / October 19 (2013): 89 / 76

The numbers don't lie and it's legitimate cause for concern for RQ and BRC officials.

The programming is similar but the lack of early season two-year-old numbers is the most striking.

Universal brickbat for RQ stewards for handing out a $200 fine to Ric McMahon for a "celebratory gesture" before the winning post on Cape Kidnappers in the last.

McMahon delivered an affectionate pat to the head of Cape Kidnappers. He loves the animal like his trainer Kelly Schweida does and was well clear of rivals.

All this did was give the panel bad publicity Australia-wide.

Donate the $200 to charity and admit it was a wrong call for heaven’s sake.

Until next week.
