SEVEN DAYS - THE WEEKLY REVIEW (APRIL 16 - APRIL 22) FROM THE STEWARDS' ROOM

By Graham Potter | Wednesday, April 23, 2014

HRO's news and commentary feature - SEVEN DAYS (THE WEDNESDAY REPORT) - provides a weekly review of racing activity, both on and off the track.

STEWARDS REPORTS EXTRACTS

FROM BEAUDESERT (APRIL 16):

Correct weight was delayed to allow J. Byrne, the rider of 2nd placegetter LITTLE SNEAKY, to view the stewards' patrol footage in the straight to ascertain whether he had grounds to lodge an objection against the winner MAHOE LASS (J. Kokotajlo). After viewing the video, jockey Byrne indicated that he did not wish to lodge an objection and correct weight was declared on the numbers semaphored. (Race 5).

When questioned regarding the seemingly improved performance of MAHOE LASS, trainer R. Lyford stated that the mare had sustained an injury following its first race start at Ipswich after which it was given an extended spell. Mr Lyford added that at its first start this campaign MAHOE LASS did not appreciate the heavy track conditions and had suffered interference on that occasion which contributed to the disappointing performance. The explanation was noted. (Race 5). *MAHOE LASS won at a starting price of $31.

J. Morris reported that AT FIRST GAZE began awkwardly, making contact with the barrier partition and as a result he lost the use of his nearside iron in the early stages of the event. (Race 5).

LITTLE SNEAKY returned to the enclosure with blood in the nearside nostril. The veterinary surgeon reported that it was consistent with being caused by external trauma. (Race 5).

When asked to comment on the disappointing performance of ARGIE'S HEART, apprentice T. Wolfgram stated that after beginning awkwardly he was obliged to pressure the gelding to take up its customary forward position and it then commenced to over-race in the middle stages and rounding the home turn was placed in restricted room to the inside of HOME TO THE BRIDE (L. Rolls) and commenced to weaken from that point onwards. He added that the stable may consider adding blinkers to the gelding for its next start. (Race 6). *ARGIES’S HEART, the $4.60 second favourite, finished last.

CRAFTY'S LAST, which sustained an abrasion to the offside hock whilst being unloaded from the float, was examined by the veterinary surgeon and passed fit to start. (Race 7).

Leaving the 400m CRAFTY'S LAST (L. Cheshire) had to be steadied when placed in restricted room between PIPPI LONGSOCKS (S. Galloway) and PUTAPAVONIT (K. Yoshida), which shifted out marginally. CRAFTY'S LAST was then held up on the heels of PIPPI LONGSOCKS for a short distance. K. Yoshida was issued with a reprimand. (Race 7).

Correct weight was delayed to allow L. Cheshire, the rider of 3rd placegetter CRAFTY'S LAST, to view the stewards' patrol footage to ascertain whether she had grounds to lodge objections against both 1st and 2nd placegetters. After viewing the videos, jockey Cheshire indicated that she did not wish to proceed with an objection and correct weight was declared on the numbers semaphored. (Race 7). *CRAFTY’S LAST finished third 1.40 lengths behind the winner.

Approaching the 300m HIALEAH JET (A. Butler) improved into a run between TUNED IN and EPIC CHOICE, at which point HIALEAH JET clipped the heels of TUNED IN and fell, dislodging apprentice Butler. DIAGNOSE (K. Yoshida), which was following, was severely inconvenienced when attempting to avoid the fallen horse and rider. At a subsequent inquiry stewards were of the view that TUNED IN, which had been inclined to race ungenerously throughout the event, shifted out at that point despite the efforts of apprentice Vigar. As stewards were satisfied that the incident was not caused through the carelessness of any one rider, no action was taken. (Race 8).

FROM ROCKHAMPTON (APRIL 17):

When questioned regarding the performance of CASH FOR MURTAL, S. Sheargold stated it was the intention to ride the filly back in the field from the wide barrier, however the horse did not travel well in the early stages, which he attributed to the rain affected track. He added however in the straight, CASH FOR MURTAL found the line well. Stewards will interview trainer K. Hansen regarding the performance. (Race 1).

ELDOSHAR (A. Coome), which usually races in a midfield to back position, was caught wide in early stages and the rider elected to improve forward to take up a position outside the leader. (Race 2). *ELDOSHAR finished last.

Stewards questioned apprentice A. Allen regarding his dual engagement on KOKO CLANG and GRAND HOTEL. In the circumstances, A. Allen's explanation was accepted. J. Stephens was substituted as the rider of KOKO CLANG. (Race 4).

M. McGillivray reported that after THUNDA COOKIE did not begin well, he gave the gelding time to balance up. He added however THUNDA COOKIE then hung in on occasions throughout. (Race 4). *THUNDA COOKIE, a $4.60 equal favourite, finished 4.00 lengths behind the winner.

Prior to the declaration of correct weight, stewards became aware that FLAG FAVOURITE (B. Stewart) and EDGEROI DIXIE (A. Coome) had started from the incorrect barriers. Stewards assessed that this had not affected the finishing positions of both runners and correct weight was semaphored on the Judge's placings. Subsequently, B. Stewart, rider of FLAG FAVOURITE, and A. Coome, rider of EDGEROIDIXIE, were each fined $100 under AR175(k) for negligence which led to a breach of Rule AR128(1). Stewards will furnish a report regarding starting issues to the Rockhampton Jockey Club and Racing Queensland. (Race 5).

When questioned regarding the performance of FLAG FAVOURITE, B. Stewart stated the mare gained a reasonable run throughout, however after shifting wider on straightening as instructed, FLAG FAVOURITE failed to run on as expected. (Race 5). FLAG FAVOURITE (3.80 second favourite) finished unplaced, 4.00 lengths behind the winner.

The start was delayed when CLAIR DU MONDE (J. Stephens) proved difficult to load. Trainer A. Stephens was advised that a further barrier certificate would be required for CLAIR DU MONDE prior to its next race start. Mrs Stephens advised that CLAIR DU MONDE may leave her stable. (Race 6).

FROM TOWNSVILLE (APRIL 17):

Stewards opened an inquiry into the running and handling of ZAHMATA OF HONOUR. After taking evidence from Jockey S. Wilson and trainer W. Kenning, stewards adjourned the inquiry until the 27th April 2014 at the Townsville Turf Club. (Race 2). *ZAHMATA OF HONOUR ($6.50) finished third, 0.60 length behind the winner.

Stewards inquired into an incident that occurred shortly after straightening for home, where CHARLIE'S GOLD was awkwardly placed on the heels of CHAIR AS WELL (F. Edwards), clipped heels, blundered and almost dislodged its rider. On the evidence it was established that prior to straightening CHARLIE'S GOLD was inclined to lay in when attempting to improve to the outside of CHAIR AS WELL, which shifted out marginally, resulting in CHARLIE'S GOLD clipping the heels of CHAIR AS WELL, becoming unbalanced, shifting out abruptly and hampering KOOLKUNA BABE. Stewards deemed that the interference was a result of CHARLIE'S GOLD laying in. (Race 2).

When questioned regarding her riding of MEREDITH, App. J. Kuskopf stated that she had anticipated the tempo of the race to be strong and, bearing that in mind, she attempted to ride the gelding off the pace. App. Kuskopf said that after travelling only a short distance runners to her inside were able to improve, resulting in MEREDITH racing three wide for the entirety of the event. When asked whether there was an opportunity for her to push forward and assume the lead, App. Kuskopf explained that in her opinion she would have had to make too much use of her mount and therefore she elected to remain racing wide. App. Kuskopf concurred with stewards that her ride lacked initiative on this occasion. (Race 4).

When questioned regarding the performance of SEQUONIS, App. J. Orman explained that although the gelding travelled in a prominent position throughout the early and middle stages, SEQUONIS was under constant pressure to maintain its position, failed to respond to his urgings from the 600 metres and was disappointing. (Race 5). SEQUONIS, the $2.60 favourite, finished fifth, 2.40 lengths behind the winner.

For some distance in the early part of the home straight NATE had difficulty obtaining clear running, then passing the 100 metres was awkwardly placed close to the heels of EXAGGERATION (App. S. Wiseman) and was shifted to the inside of that runner. NATE was again disappointed when attempting a narrow run to the inside of EXAGGERATION and had to be checked shortly thereafter when SIZZLELON (App. S. Fawke) shifted out to improve. (Race 6). *NATE ($18) finished sixth, 1.80 lengths behind the winner.

EXAGGERATION lost its off-hind plate in running. A post-race veterinary examination of EXAGGERATION revealed that the gelding had superficial skin wounds on the off hind leg over the medial fetlock. (Race 6). *EXAGGERATION ($6.50) finished fifth 1.40 lengths behind the winner.

FROM EAGLE FARM (APRIL 19):

D. Browne reported at scale that GOOD JOB BRO jumped away awkwardly, resulting in him making contact with the upright and as a result he was not able to fully test his mount during the race. D Browne was examined by the club's doctor following the race and cleared to fulfil his remaining engagements. (Race 5).

G. Colless reported that TINTO was reluctant to improve inside other runners rounding the home turn and he advised connections to experiment with blinkers. (Race 6).

Connections advised that PROOF OF LIFE would be ridden back in the field today. PROOF OF LIFE was subsequently ridden back in the field. Trainer T. Gollan was fined $200 for failing to advise stewards earlier than he did on this occasion. (Race 8).

Near the 1300m, SHOW OF STRENGTH (R. Wiggins) made contact with the hind quarters of BINGO BOBBY (M. McGuren) when taken in by KENTUCKY WOMAN (C. Munce), which in turn was taken in by MORE LEVERAGE (B. El-Issa). Stewards severely reprimanded B. El-Issa, rider of MORE LEVERAGE, and advised him to be fully clear in future when shifting ground. (Race 8).

L. Cassidy reported that HEART OF MANY raced ungenerously throughout the race. A post-race veterinary examination of HEART OF MANY revealed the horse to be coughing. Trainer B. Baldwin undertook to report to stewards if anything was amiss with the gelding in the days following the event. (Race 8).

FROM GOLD COAST (APRIL 19):

Leaving the 300m a towel fell from ROMAN CONFLICT (K Forrester). Prior to declaring correct weight, Stewards established that the towel was handed to Jockey Forrester at the barriers to wipe sweat from ROMAN CONFLICT. Jockey Forrester forgot to return the towel to the barrier attendants and as such carried the towel on the wither of ROMAN CONFLICT during the early and middle stages of the event. As the towel did not form part of the gear which Jockey Forrester weighed out with, Stewards were satisfied that ROMAN CONFLICT had carried its correct weight and subsequently declared correct weight. Jockey Forrester was fined the sum of $100 for his negligent actions. (Race 1).

A post-race veterinary examination of ON ICE NOW (J Orman) revealed the mare to have cast its off-fore plate in running and to be slightly sore in that same leg as a consequence. Trainer L Fraser advised Stewards that ON ICE NOW does wear glue-on shoes and the mare's poor performance would be attributed to it losing the shoe. (Race 1).

When questioned as to the tempo set in the early and middle stages by CHIEF JUSTICE Jockey M Vance stated that she was instructed to lead on the gelding. Jockey Vance added that she was able to obtain the lead with relative ease and during the early stages she attempted to restrain CHIEF JUSTICE to take up a trailing position behind BRIGADOON AFFAIR, however, the gelding commenced to race strongly and as such she was content to allow it to stride forward to the lead. Jockey Vance further added that CHIEF JUSTICE continued to race strongly in the middle stages despite her efforts. Jockey Vance noted that CHIEF JUSTICE had displayed similar racing manners at its last start. Her explanation was noted. (Race 2).*CHIEF JUSTICE ($4.80 second favourite) finished third, 1.80 lengths behind the winner.

When questioned regarding the tactics adopted on THAIDAY, Jockey L Rolls stated that he was instructed to take up a forward position from the inside barrier. Jockey Rolls added that after beginning well he was able to maintain a forward position with relative ease. Trainer M Eggleston confirmed the instructions which were issued on the basis that THAIDAY was stepping up in distance and that there was no speed in today's race. Mr Eggleston added that from a wide barrier at its last start he had issued similar instructions, however, on that occasion after being ridden aggressively in the early stages THAIDAY was only able to obtain a mid-field position and raced wide throughout. Mr Eggleston noted that THAIDAY had shown a tendency to over-race previously and bearing in mind the lack of speed was reluctant to have THAIDAY positioned behind other horses. Whilst noting the circumstances of today's race, Stewards reminded Mr Eggleston of his obligations to advise them of any perceived change of tactics. (Race 4). *THAIDAY ($7) won the race.

When questioned as to the tactics adopted on ABU BEN ADAM (J Johnson) which led today, Trainer P Duff stated that his instructions were to lead from the wide barrier. Mr Duff advised that after beginning well ABU BEN ADAM was able to obtain the lead with relative ease. Mr Duff indicated that ABU BEN ADAM performed best when able to take up a forward position and circumstances at its previous two starts had prevented the gelding from being ridden in a forward position. Mr Duff added that where possible, ABU BEN ADAM would be ridden in a similar fashion. (Race 5).*ABU BEN ADAM ($5) won the race.

When questioned, App. A Butler stated that his instructions were to have VINTAGE COGNAC positioned where comfortable. He was of the opinion that he would have had to ride VINTAGE COGNAC aggressively in the early stages to obtain a forward position so he was content to steady the gelding and take up a trailing position behind HEARTBREAK HARRY. App. Butler added that this was VINTAGE COGNAC's first start in a clockwise direction and as a result the gelding was inclined to hang out rounding the home turn and in the home straight. (Race 5).* VINTAGE COGNAC, the $2.30 favourite, finished third, 1.50 lengths behind the winner.

App. B Newport was reprimanded for failing to ride ROWA'S MARK out to the end of the race.(Race 5). *ROWA’S MARK finished fifth, 0.10 lengths behind the fourth placed runner.

App. C Schmidt reported that after beginning only fairly she was obliged to take up a position just worse of mid-field. She added that ROCK THE PAC had raced in a forward position at its two previous starts when inclined to over-race. App. Schmidt was therefore of the view that ROCK THE PAC was better suited to be ridden with cover where it was able to settle. Trainer L Gough confirmed that ROCK THE PAC at its last start was caught wide early and as such was ridden forward to the lead and agreed with App. Schmidt that the horse is better suited ridden with cover. (Race 6). *ROCK THE PAC, a $4.60 favourite, finished third 0.50 lengths behind the winner.

There was a delay to correct weight whilst Jockey Vance (TELMEMORE) sought to review the footage to ascertain whether she had grounds to lodge an objection against the winner, HYDRAZINE (L Rolls). After viewing the footage Jockey Vance declined to proceed with the objection and correct weight was declared. (Race 7).

Stewards will interview App. A Hearn as to his riding of BRIGADOON LEGEND over the concluding stages of the race. (Race 7). *BRIGADOON LEGEND, the $4.40 favourite, finished fourth 2.40 lengths behind the winner and 0.30 lengths behind the third placed runner.

When questioned as to the disappointing performance of DIET, Jockey P Holmes stated that he had been instructed to lead however the gelding was unable to must sufficient speed in the early stages. Jockey Holmes expressed his disappointment in the performance of DIET. Stewards will interview Trainer B Herne at a later date. (Race 8). *DIET finished last.

FROM TOOWOOMBA (APRIL 19):

On returning to scale jockey N. Yamada reported to Stewards that after obtaining a forward position ZAHA COUNTY travelled well throughout the event, however when placed under pressure rounding the home turn and in the home straight failed to respond to his riding and proved disappointing. Trainer M. Kropp's representative advised that despite only having one race start the gelding has been in work for a considerable period of time and following the disappointing performance tonight it is their intention to now spell ZAHA COUNTY. A post-race veterinary examination of ZAHA COUNTY failed to reveal any abnormalities. (Race 1). *ZAHA COUNTY, the $3 favourite, finished second last 10.40 lengths behind the winner.

Stewards questioned N. Tomizawa in relation to the seemingly disappointing performance of ROSENET. Jockey Tomizawa advised that after beginning reasonably, ROSENET failed to muster the early speed he had anticipated and as a result settled a little further back in the field than he had planned. Jockey Tomizawa further advised that the filly travelled reasonably throughout the event, however when placed under pressure in the home straight failed to quicken with the remainder of the field, but in his opinion ran on reasonably in the home straight. Jockey Tomizawa added that based on the performance tonight, it is his opinion that the filly would be better suited in races over longer distances than tonight's event.

Trainer B. Hill agreed with jockey Tomizawa's comments, adding that he was surprised to see ROSENET settle further back than he had anticipated. He said that as a result of this, the filly was forced to race amongst other runners, which he felt was to its detriment. A post-race veterinary examination of ROSENET revealed the filly to be exhibiting an abnormal respiratory noise. Mr Hill was advised that before ROSENET is permitted to race again he must produce a veterinary clearance for the filly, including the results of an endoscopic examination. (Race 2). ROSENET ($2.30 favourite, finished fifth 6.40 lengths behind the winner.

Stewards questioned jockey N. Yamada in relation to his riding of MAKOSSA rounding the home turn and in the home straight. Of concern to Stewards was whether there was an opportunity for him to have maintained a trailing position behind PETLEY at that point of the race, which would have afforded him clear running directly to the outside of that runner on straightening, whereas jockey Yamada shifted to the extreme outside on turning for home to obtain clear running. Jockey Yamada advised Stewards that from the 500m, when positioned behind PETLEY, he was of the view that that runner was under pressure at that stage of the race and as his mount was travelling stronger at that point, he elected to shift to the outside of PETLEY and FRISCO JOE.

Jockey Yamada added that as he is of the opinion that MAKOSSA is one-paced, he believed that this was the better option as opposed to maintaining a trailing position behind PETLEY as he was of the view that MAKOSSA would not have possessed the necessary sprint to finish off the race strongly if forced to wait until straightening to obtain clear running. Whilst Stewards noted the explanation tendered by jockey Yamada, they were nevertheless of the view that it would have been more advantageous for jockey Yamada to trail PETLEY around the home turn with the view of obtaining clear running. As Stewards did not believe that jockey Yamada's riding had fallen below the required standard so as to be culpable under the rules, no action was taken. (Race 3). *MAKOSSA ($11) finished fourth 3.40 lengths behind the winner.

As G. Killen was to be overweight, J. Letherby was substituted as the rider of LITTLE AUDREY. After taking into account jockey Killen's excellent record and that this was the first occasion on which he had been overweight, Stewards issued a reprimand. (Race 5).

Near the 350m SPIRITED SAINT was tightened for room between HENNY BOY, which shifted in marginally, and DEUTERONOMY, which shifted out after improving on to the heels of the tiring ABSOLUTE MUSIC (K. Yoshida). As a result, SPIRITED SAINT was buffeted and then shifted out resulting in HENNY BOY being forced to shift out, resulting in CASA CIELLO being tightened for room and checked. Whilst Stewards noted the incident was one of some significance, after reviewing the available patrol footage, which Stewards deemed inconclusive, they were unable to attribute full blame to any one rider, however jockey Yamada (DEUTERONOMY) was reminded of his obligations in respect of shifting ground when not sufficiently clear. (Race 5).

ABSOLUTE MUSIC bled from both nostrils. As this was the first occasion on which the mare has bled, trainer G. Heinrich was advised that ABSOLUTE MUSIC would be ineligible to race for a period of 3 months, and prior to resuming racing must perform satisfactorily in a 1000m gallop in the presence of a steward. (Race 5).

Stewards questioned apprentice J. Orman in relation to his riding of HENNY BOY in the home straight. Of concern to Stewards was the reason for apprentice Orman shifting wider on the track near the 200m when there appeared to be a run present itself between HOGWOBBLE (B. Appo) and LITTLE AUDREY. Apprentice Orman advised Stewards that he was instructed to position HENNY BOY wider on the track through the middle stages of the event to enable it to improve into the race, however after sustaining interference near the 550m and again rounding the home turn, was unable to do so. Apprentice Orman added that whilst a run did present itself between HOGWOBBLE and LITTLE AUDREY, bearing in mind his instructions, he was reluctant to improve into this run and therefore shifted to the outside of LITTLE AUDREY at that stage of the race. Jockey Orman, after having the opportunity to view the patrol footage, agreed with Stewards that he had erred in his riding in not improving between HOGWOBBLE and LITTLE AUDREY by shifting to the outside of the heels of LITTLE AUDREY. Stewards, bearing in mind apprentice Orman's relative inexperience, took the matter no further other than to remind him to ride his mounts at all times in such a manner as not to leave his riding open to question. (Race 5).

FROM FLINTON (APRIL 19):

DAZARAE (N Nishio) was slow to jump. App. Nishio reported that when he was racing in a rearward position he shifted wider on the track to avoid the very heavy dust kickback. (Race 1). *DAZARAE ($10) finished last.

Trainer J Anderson and App. N Ogura were questioned as to the poor performance of heavily supported SOHO NIGHTS. App Ogura stated that the gelding hung in from the start until the home turn, however then to hang out in the home straight proving difficult ride out. Miss Anderson expressed disappointment with the performance today and further advised that the gelding had a history of bans for hanging in N.S.W. Given the circumstances a warning was placed on SOHO NIGHTS however should the horse race in a similar manner in future starts further action may be taken. (Race 2). *SOHO NIGHTS, the $3.20 favourite, finished last.

DOM PAOLO was subjected to a pre-race Veterinary inspection and passed to race. (Race 3). *DOM PAOLO ($8) finished last.

THE ROBBER (W O' Connell ) became fractious in the barriers rearing over dislodging Jockey O’Connell. Jockey O'Connell who was injured (his left leg and back of the neck) in this incident was declared unfit to ride by Ambulance officers. Jockey O'Connell will require Medical clearance prior to riding again. THE ROBBER sustained lacerations and bruising to the jaw and nose areas and was withdrawn by order of the Stewards. (Race 3).

Stewards inquired into the reason for BEAUTIFUL BARB losing ground at the 900m. As the available Patrol Video was inconclusive and unable to assist no direct action was taken. On the riders evidence tendered at the inquiry it was established that at this point of the race COVER UP (N Evans) which was racing to the inside of BEAUTIFUL BARB may have shifted out marginally and ZIPOLITE (G Geran) which raced outside BEAUTIFUL BARB may have rolled in slightly, however as this could not be confirmed, no blame was apportioned to any rider. (Race 4).

FROM BARCALDINE (APRIL 19):

All riders at this meeting provided a negative breath alcohol sample.

Apprentice I French reported that near the 800 metres, he shifted DASHING DUNLOP wider on the track as the gelding seemed the resent the sand kicked back and raced wide. (Race 1).

RED ALL OVER and SIR IGER were declared late scratchings at 12.20pm due to no available riders. (Race 4).

Apprentice I. French (CLEAR) reported that the barrier gate was slow to open. This was reported to the starter and re-tested following the race. (Race 4).

FROM BOULIA (APRIL 19):

LITTLEMISSPERFECT was a late scratching at 11.45am after Trainer Mr P. Inwood advised Stewards that he had been unable to load the mare onto the float to bring to the races. LITTLEMISSPERFECT … apparently was not well-named, or was the name of mare chosen with tongue-in-cheek in the first place?

STARLET (T. Chambers) was a late scratching at 1.04pm by order of Stewards after being difficult to load into the barriers, and subsequently, with the rider off, was loaded, reared, forcing the rear of the starting gates open and then galloped a considerable distance. (Race 1).

As no other suitable rider was available Stewards allowed A. Spradau to ride DEXTERITY three kilograms overweight. (Race 2). *DEXTERITY ($26) finished fourth, 4.40 lengths behind the winner.

FROM EINASLEIGH (APRIL 19):

An inquiry into the reason why K Rockett (Bush Version) was dislodged passing the 400m was adjourned to a date to be fixed. K Rockett was transported to hospital with a suspected fracture to his right ankle. (Race 1).

Midnite Raid (S Wilson) was hampered at the start when the off side gate of the barriers rebounded and made contact with S Wilson's foot. (Race 3). *Midnite Raid ($6) finished fourth 2.00 lengths behind the winner.

Stewards considered an objection lodged by App S Wiseman (Damashqui) placed second against the winner Rothschild Lad (P Cullen). On the evidence it was established that passing the 200m Rothschild Lad shifted out and brushed Damashqui however bearing in mind the margin of a head, stewards could not be comfortably satisfied that had the interference not occurred Damashqui would have beaten Rothschild Lad and therefore dismissed the objection. (Race 6).

FROM GLADSTONE (APRIL 19):

HAYIL METRO pulled its off-hind shoe in the saddling enclosure. As there was no farrier on course stewards order the near-hind shoe to be removed prior to leaving the saddling enclosure. HAYIL METRO (L Dillon) was slow into stride and raced wide throughout.(Race 2). *No farrier … so who was authorised to remove the shoe?

Stewards accepted the explanation from Trainer L Kiernan for not declaring a rider for RED ERIC by the prescribed time. Never less trainer Kiernan was issued with a warning about not contacting stewards if having difficulty finding riders. (Race 4).

FROM NANANGO (APRIL 19):

Declaration of correct weight was delayed when C Eaton, rider of fourth placegetter PETRANI, requested to view the official photo finish image. After viewing the image stewards declared correct weight on the judges semaphored numbers. (Race 1).

When questioned regarding tactics adopted on FLIGHT COMMAND, particularly his decision to leave a favourable trailing position at the 900 metres and race three wide under hard riding, App J King stated his instructions were to lead as the gelding had shown a tendency in previous starts not to finish its races off when ridden back in the field. App King added FLIGHT COMMAND did respond when placed under pressure to improve and in his opinion was most disappointing.

Trainer N King confirmed the instructions, stating that FLIGHT COMMAND has run its best races when leading. Stewards accepted the explanation from both parties. A post race Vet examination of FLIGHT COMMAND failed to reveal any abnormality. (Race 2). *Flight Command ($8) finished last.

When questioned regarding the below market performance of MY LETHAL PONY, rider S Drake stated that after being crossed at the 1200 metres the mare did not appreciate travelling in amongst other runners and was under pressure from the 800 metres to maintain its position and in her opinion was disappointing. A subsequent Vet examination of MY LETHAL PONY failed to reveal any abnormality. * MY LETHAL PONY, the $3.50 second favourite, finished last.

A Merritt, rider of KING BING, reported that despite being caught wide early the gelding obtained a favourable position outside the leader from the 1100 metres but failed to run on when placed under pressure. Trainer N Schofield indicated to stewards KING BING would now be leaving his stables. (Race 3).

When questioned regarding the below marker performance of CELTIC DRAGON, App C Jokic stated that after blundering at the start, the gelding never felt comfortable in the run and failed to stretch out when placed under pressure. A post race Vet examination of CELTIC DRAGON revealed cuts to the inside of the mouth and a loose tooth. (Race 4). *CELTIC DRAGON ($4.40) finished last.

A false start was declared when OKINAWA (App M Cox), which after being loaded, became fractious and broke through the barriers dislodging its rider and galloping a circuit of the track. As a consequence of OKINAWA breaking through the barriers, the remaining barriers all opened prematurely releasing the field. As a result S Drake, rider of GLAMORGAN BOY was dislodged with that runner also galloping a circuit of the track riderless. (Race 5).

FROM ROMA (APRIL 19):

When given the opportunity to comment on the below market performance of CRAIGLEA TEQUILA, jockey C. Bryen stated that his mount was climbing through the kickback in the early and middle stages and never travelled comfortably on today's track. A post-race veterinary examination of CRAIGLEA TEQUILA failed to reveal any abnormalities. (Race 2).

Stewards questioned C. Bryen, the rider of CRAIGLEA DANSAL, with regards to the disappointing performance of that runner. He stated that the filly travelled well outside the leader in the early stages however it put in an awkward stride near the 600m and became unbalanced. He added that CRAIGLEA DANSAL dropped the bit from this point and commenced to weaken despite his efforts and proved disappointing. Stewards will interview trainer K. Johnston with regards to the performance of CRAIGLEA DANSAL at a later date. A post-race veterinary examination of CRAIGLEA DANSAL failed to reveal any abnormalities. (Race 3).

Correct weight was delayed to allow stewards to establish if DR HOUSE had been afforded a fair start. After viewing the patrol footage, it was established that DR HOUSE began awkwardly and slipped behind which resulted in jockey M. Abe becoming unbalanced and losing the use of his offside iron. Stewards were therefore satisfied that DR HOUSE was afforded a fair start and gave correct weight on the judges placing's. Near the 800m M. Abe, when unsuccessfully attempting to regain his offside iron, removed his foot from his near side iron which placed him at a distinct disadvantage for the remainder of the race. (Race 3).

Near the 600m ICE MELODY shifted in marginally taking CRAIGLEA EVITA in onto OH SO CLOSE (M. McGillivray) which in turn shifted in crowding MAGIC GLENYCE which was checked and lost ground. While the incident was of some significance, stewards on the available race footage and the evidence provided by all riders were unable to apportion blame on any one rider, however advised all riders to exercise care. (Race 4).

Correct weight was delayed for stewards to consider a protest lodged by apprentice L. Tilley, the rider of second placed PUBLICITY, against the winner TELESIUS (M. McGillivray), for alleged interference in the home straight. After taking evidence from all parties and viewing the official patrol footage, stewards were of the view that on entering the home straight, PUBLICITY commenced to shift in under pressure, at the same time, TELESIUS which was improving from behind that runner also commenced to shift in, resulting in both runners shifting in towards the inside running rail, before TELESIUS was corrected by its rider near the 50m and shifted out when running to the finish line. Stewards could not be satisfied that TELESIUS had dictated the running of PUBLICITY and therefore dismissed the protest and gave correct weight on the Judge's placing's. (Race 5).

Stewards questioned J. Geppert (MOORINGS MAGIC), and C. Rogers (THE WATER BOMBER), regarding the riding tactics they adopted on their mounts, whereby they led by a considerable distance in the early and middle stages of the race. Jockey Geppert and Rogers stated that their mounts race in a forward position, however added that their respective mounts over-raced during the early and middle stages of the race despite their efforts to get their mounts to settle and as a result led by a considerable margin. Stewards after viewing the race patrol footage accepted the explanations from both riders. (Race 5).

FROM SUNSHINE COAST (APRIL 20):

R. Wiggins reported that, in his opinion, SCHILLACKING was somewhat disappointing in that the gelding enjoyed a favourable run throughout the event, however when asked for an effort in the home straight after obtaining clear running the gelding did not finish the race off as anticipated. He added that SCHILLACKING may be looking for races over longer distances. (Race 2). *SCHILLACKING, the $2.30 favourite, finished third 3.30 lengths behind the winner.

L. Cassidy reported that CARDICIAN did not perform well in today's rain affected conditions. He added that the gelding was slow to begin, which resulted in him being positioned further back in the field than he would have liked, and he was also unable to improve during the middle stages when following TARTAN WARRIOR (J. Johnson), which was over-racing. (Race 3). *CARDICIAN ($6) finished last.

Jockey Wiggins was questioned regarding the performance of LASCAR. He stated that at its most recent start the gelding had shown a tendency to over-race, however in today's event he was obliged to pressure the horse to hold its position. He added that rounding the turn, LASCAR laid in and continued to do so until approaching the 300m. He indicated that he was disappointed with the performance and recommended to connections to experiment with blinkers on the gelding and also consider dropping the horse back in distance for its next start. (Race 3).*LASCAR ($2.80 favourite, finished third 3.80 lengths behind the winner.

Leaving the 1200m, CLIFF'S DREAM raced greenly for a short distance after being restrained from the heels of LAST BET (T. Harrison). LAST BET commenced to weaken from approaching the 600m. This resulted in CLIFF'S DREAM, which was following, having to be restrained on a number of occasions and approaching the 400m had to be checked when improving onto the heels of LAST BET. (Race 4).

Stewards questioned apprentice S.Payne, rider of CLIFF'S DREAM, regarding the tactics employed between the 700m and 400m, which saw him lose ground when positioned behind the weakening LAST BET. Of concern to stewards was whether apprentice Payne had the opportunity to shift out around LAST BET during that section of the race. Apprentice Payne explained that he wished to avoid shifting wider on the track to ensure he was not in a position away from the fence when entering the home straight.

Whilst mindful of his explanation, stewards advised apprentice Payne that in similar circumstances when a horse he is following is clearly weakening he would be expected to make a greater effort to improve his position to avoid losing valuable ground. LAST BET was found to have suffered a significant laceration to the near side hock. (Race 4). *CLIFF’S DREAM ($5.50) finished fourth 4.20 lengths behind the winner.

Connections advised that with blinkers on today and the good barrier draw, JASPERS MAGIC would be ridden in a more forward position. Despite being ridden aggressively in the early stages, JASPERS MAGIC could not muster any early speed and was ridden in the second half of the field. (Race 5).

Stewards inquired into the reason GOLDTHORN (G. Killen) had to be checked approaching the 1100m after becoming awkward on the heels of ZEEVA (M. Hellyer). M. Hellyer, rider of ZEEVA, stated that after improving forward at this point ZEEVA commenced to race ungenerously and lay out and as a result he had steadied the pace in an effort to prevent ZEEVA from shifting out. Whilst stewards noted the racing manners of ZEEVA, stewards were of the opinion other options were available to jockey Hellyer and as such he was issued with a reprimand in that he steadied the pace to that extent. JASPERS MAGIC, which was following GOLDTHORN, was also steadied in this incident.

Approaching the 700m, KIM LOUISE (J. Morris) shifted in, tightening the running of ZEEVA, which became unbalanced and made contact with the running rail and lost ground.

GOLDTHORN was held up for clear running passing the 400m and then shifted out in an attempt to secure clear running and in doing so inconvenienced VON MOGLICH. A short distance later GOLDTHORN was again disappointed for clear running between KIM LOUISE and MISS CHALLENGER (A. Butler), both of which shifted ground (Race 5). *GOLDTHORN ($10) finished fifth, 5.70 lengths behind the winner.

D. Browne, rider of JASPERS MAGIC, reported he was held up for clear running when rounding the home turn, and that his mount was doing its best work over the concluding stages and would be suited to being stepped up in distance. (Race 5). *JASPERS MAGIC, the $2.90 second favourite, finished third, 2.00 lengths behind the winner.

M. Hellyer was reprimanded for leaving the course without seeking permission of the stewards. (Race 5).

Stewards questioned R. McMahon regarding the performance of SMART HUSS in the presence of trainer J. Meagher. Jockey McMahon stated that SMART HUSS did not travel comfortably from the 1000m onwards and that when asked for an effort rounding the home turn did not respond and proved very disappointing. He could not offer any explanation for the performance other than the fact that the horse was having its first start back from a spell with 59 kilograms in rain affected conditions.

Trainer J. Meagher confirmed his disappointment and could add nothing further to jockey McMahon's comments. A post-race veterinary examination of SMART HUSS failed to reveal any significant abnormalities. Mr Meagher undertook to have the horse examined by the stable's veterinarian, and following this stewards advised him that they would revisit the horse's performance following his veterinary report. A swab sample was taken from SMART HUSS. (Race 6).*SMART HUSS, the $1.30 favourite, finished last of the eight runners, 9.90 lengths behind the winner.

When questioned regarding the seemingly disappointing performance of BROTHER LOVE, T. Bell stated that the horse travelled well in the early and middle stages, however once placed under pressure, in his opinion, BROTHER LOVE did not handle today's track conditions. Stewards noted his explanation. (Race 7) *BROTHER LOVE, the $3.60 favourite, finished second last, 15.70 lengths behind the winner.
T. Bell was reprimanded for failing to seek permissions of the stewards before leaving the track. (Race 7).

FROM EMERALD (APRIL 20):

Six riders at this meeting were randomly breath tested. All returned negative samples.

Jockey D Evans was cautioned regarding the number of times he used the whip on INDY MISS, when it was clearly winning. (Race 1).

EXCLUSIVE KITTY was declared a late scratching by order of Stewards. Trainer P Bailey will be interviewed regarding this matter at a later date. (Race 3).

Jockey L. Dillon reported that MISTABLISTA lay in around the home turn and his whip had become entangled when he attempted to straighten. (Race 5). *MISTABLISTA ($2.50) finished third 1.20 lengths behind the winner.

Jockey D Evans was fined $200 under AR 137A (4)(e) in that he struck POWER TO EXCEED on at least one occasion after passing the winning post. In consideration of penalty, Stewards were mindful of Jockey Evans' recent poor record in regard to whip offences and his caution in Race 1. (Race 5). *POWER TO SUCCEED, $1.70 favourite, finished second 0.20 lengths behind the winner.

FROM GOLD COAST (APRIL 21):

SUPPLEMENTARY (From Gold Coast April 19 – Race 7): App A. Hearn was fined the sum of $200.00 for failing to ride BRIGADOON LEGEND out to the end of the race.

SUPPLEMENTARY (From Gold Coast April 19 – Race 8): Trainer B. Hearne reported that the day following the event DIET was found to be lame in the off-fore leg. Mr Hearne indicated that DIET would now be retired from racing. Nonetheless Mr Hearne was advised that should DIET race again a veterinary certificate would be required.

Leaving the 600m THAT PRETTY GIRL (E. Wilkinson) was severely checked and lost substantial ground when tightened for room by BALKAN BAMBINO (J. Taylor), which shifted in after being heavily bumped by JUST A SINGLE GIRL (L. Cassidy), which shifted in and away from SAVANNAH DREAM (C. Munce) despite the efforts of its rider. SAMARAH GIRL (App P. Schmidt) which was following was inconvenienced when avoiding THAT PRETTY GIRL. At a subsequent inquiry stewards were of the view that the racing manners of JUST A SINGLE GIRL had contributed to the interference suffered by THAT PRETTY GIRL and as such did not deem any one rider careless. Trainer S. Kendrick was advised that a warning would be placed on the racing manners of JUST A SINGLE GIRL, which was having its first race today. (Race 1).

When questioned as to the overall performance of BROOKTON ICE jockey Butler stated he was instructed to obtain a forward position. Jockey Butler added that after blundering shortly after the start BROOKTON ICE was forced to race further back in the field than anticipated. Jockey Butler further added that BROOKTON ICE, despite finishing the race off well, raced greenly in the home straight and would appreciate a step up in distance. A post-race veterinary examination of BROOKTON ICE revealed the gelding had sustained lacerations to both hind pasterns. (Race 2) *BROOKTON ICE, the $4.20 favourite, finished sixth 4.60 lengths behind the winner.

When questioned as to the overall performance of CASINO EXPRESS jockey Bell stated that the filly began awkwardly and lost ground at the start. Jockey Bell noted that CASINO EXPRESS had begun in a similar fashion in its trials leading into today's race. Jockey Bell added that approaching the 1100m he was forced to steady from the heels of IN TAIWAN, which shifted out when racing ungenerously. Jockey Bell added that leaving the 600m his intention was to force SHANTUNG BOXER wider so as to improve into the race however, as SHANTUNG BOXER was racing forward of him he was unable to do so so elected to maintain his position on the fence.

Jockey Bell further added that leaving the 400m he attempted to improve to the outside of LE CHAT BOTTE (App B. Appo) But was held up on the heels of ZOOMING AWAY and was obliged to shift back to the inside of LE CHAT BOTTE to secure clear running in the home straight. CASINO EXPRESS was then disappointed for a run to the inside of IF EVER (App A. Hearn) near the 150m at which point he was again obliged to alter course to secure clear running. (Race 4). *CASINO EXPRESS, the $2 favourite, finished second, 0.50 lengths behind SHANTUNG BOXER.

A post race veterinary examination of KAINJI ROCK, which was under pressure leaving the 500m, revealed the gelding to be lame in the near-fore leg. Trainer J. Meagher was advised that a veterinary clearance would be required prior to KAINJI ROCK racing again. (Race 7). KAINJI ROCK ($6) finished a tailed off last.

A post-race veterinary examination of PER MILLE, which proved disappointing revealed the gelding to be lame in the near-fore leg. Trainer R. Heathcote was advised that a veterinary clearance would be required prior to PER MILLE racing again. (Race 7). *PER MILLE, the $3.70 favourite, finished second last 7.10 lengths behind the winner.

A pre-race veterinary examination of GIZMO (App C. Schmidt), which was late arriving on course due to transport difficulties, cleared the filly to start. A pre-race sample was taken from GIZMO. (Race 8). *GIZMO ($15) finished unplaced 6.00 lengths behind the winner.

SHEPIKTUS (M. Cahill) lunged forward as the start was effected, made contact with the barriers, began awkwardly and lost ground. (Race 8). SHEPIKTUS ($8) finished last, 11.00 lengths behind the winner.

C. Munce reported that for the majority of the home straight PANDORA CHARM was reluctant to improve into a run between PALAIS COURT (E. Wilkinson) and OH CANDY (J. Byrne) which was inclined to shift out under pressure. Jockey Munce added that as a result he stopped riding PANDORA CHARM with the whip over the final 100m and instead rode it out hands and heels at which point the filly commenced to respond to his riding. (Race 8). *PANDORA CHARM, the $3.50 favourite, finished fourth, 3.10 lengths behind the winner and 0.10 lengths behind the third placed runner.

Near the 200m EASTERN PRINCE shifted out and bumped TWISTED MOUNTAIN and did so again approaching the 100m. When questioned as to the performance of TWISTED MOUNTAIN jockey Munce stated he was not entirely disappointed with the performance bearing in mind the 59 kilo impost and that the gelding was up in class today. (Race 9). *TWISTED MOUNTAIN, the $1.60 favourite, finished fourth, 2.80 lengths behind the winner.

A post-race veterinary examination of TULLA EXPRESS (C. Munce), which proved disappointing, failed to reveal any abnormalities. Jockey Munce stated that TULLA EXPRESS was inclined to hang out during the race. Trainer T. Edmonds indicated that TULLA EXPRESS would be sent for a spell following today's disappointing performance. (RACE 10). *TULLA EXPRESS, the $4 favourite, finished unplaced 7.20 lengths behind the winner.

FROM AUGATHELLA (APRIL 21):

CRAWFISH (G Steele) which was slow to begin, shifted out under hard riding in the home straight. App. G Steele was reminded of her obligations to stop riding and straighten her mounts when shifting ground. (Race 4). *CRAWFISH ($5) finished second 1.50 lengths behind the winner.

FROM BOWEN (APRIL 21):

This meeting was postponed from Saturday the 19th of April 2014 to Monday the 21 of April 2014 due to the state of the track on Saturday.

Trainer Mr A. Cameron made application to the Stewards to replace jockey T. Bannon with jockey G. Watson on QUEEN THYRA. Bannons riding fee and any prize moneys earned to which she was entitled. (Race 4). *QUEEN THYRA ($3.50) finished second 0.50 lengths behind its slightly more fancied stable companion Dux Bellorum ($2.50).

FROM GOODIWINDI (APRIL 21):

Stewards questioned apprentice A. Fancourt with regards to her riding of LOVE STORIES from the 400m and in particular the reason for her shifting wider on the track when following the eventual winner VIRGINIA PLAIN. A. Fancourt stated that her instructions were to settle the horse behind the speed and to make a run from the 400m. She added that approaching the 400m when racing behind VIRGINIA PLAIN and to the inside of LITTLE BIG LOU'S heels, she was mindful of her instructions to make her run and felt that she would be held up and for this reason eased and shifted to the outside of LITTLE BIG LOU and pressured her mount from that point. Trainer J. Byrne confirmed the instructions issued. Stewards in considering the matter, advised Ms Fancourrt that she had made an error in judgement by easing her mount and shifting out instead of persevering for a run behind the eventual winner, however considering the riding instructions given and her relative inexperience as an apprentice, stewards did not feel that her actions rendered her culpable under the rules and took no further action. (Race 2).

A pre-race veterinary examination of CHROMED which competed at the Flinton race meeting on Saturday 19 April, cleared that gelding to take its place in the field. (Race 5). *CHROMED ($41) finished fifth 4.00 lengths behind the winner.

Stewards sought an explanation from K. St Vincent, rider of MUJAHU, which compounded from approaching the home turn and finished a significant distance last. He stated that his instructions were to obtain a position just behind the leaders, however he was obligated to race three wide and was unable to obtain cover, which he felt had a bearing on the horse's performance. Jockey St Vincent further stated that his mount made a noise in the home straight and advised that the horse had previously had an operation for a wind abnormality.

Trainer A. St Vincent concurred with the jockey's comments that the horse has a history of disappointing performances when not being able to obtain cover, and felt that this had a significant influence on the performance, and that he would now look to send the gelding for a short spell. A post race veterinary examination of MUJAHU failed to reveal any significant abnormalities. In light of today's performance, trainer A. St Vincent was advised that MUJAHU would be required to officially trial to the steward’s satisfaction before being permitted to race again. (Race 5).

Stewards reprimanded trainer K. Bolton with regards to the late declaration of N. Evans as the rider of PROMROSE SKY. In considering the matter, stewards took into consideration some mitigating circumstances. Trainer K. Bolton advised that it would be the intention to ride PRIMROSE SKY in a forward position from the favourable barrier. PRIMROSE SKY subsequently began awkwardly and settled in the second half of the field. A post-race veterinary examination of PRIMROSE SKY revealed the mare to have sustained an injury to the near fore suspensory ligament and was lame. Trainer K. Bolton was advised that a veterinary clearance would be required for PRIMROSE SKY prior to its next race start. (Race 6).

Correct weight was delayed to allow stewards to consider an application from the connections of RULING MISS to have that mare declared a non-runner on the grounds that the horse had been denied a fair start. After taking evidence from apprentice R. Ride, trainer J. Hanna and the starter, it was established that RULING MISS had turned its head into the adjoining stall to its right prior to the start being effected, resulting in the mare losing significant ground. Stewards were satisfied acting under the provisions of AR134A that RULING MISS had been denied a fair start and therefore declared that horse a non-runner. All monies on RULING MISS were ordered to be refunded. (Race 6).

As a result of T. Treichel being stood down from his remaining engagements due to injury, trainer P. Sinclair made application for TAPAKENG to be declared a late scratching due to there being no senior rider available to ride that runner at the allotted weight of 54 kilograms. In the circumstances, stewards acceded to Mr Sinclair's request and TAPAKENG was withdrawn at 3.32 pm. As betting on this race had not commenced, no deductions applied. (Race 7).

Byrne), which was forced inwards, tightening the running of CRAIGLEA SHERRY (T. Harrison), which was then tightened on to CASTING STONES (T. Wolfgram), which also was obliged to shift in, making contact with LEGAZPI, which in turn resulted in T. Harrison taking hold of CRAIGLEA SHERRY and jockey Byrne taking hold of CROSS THE STAR, causing both horses to lose ground at this point of the race.
