By Graham Potter | Wednesday, May 14, 2014

HRO's news and commentary feature - SEVEN DAYS (THE WEDNESDAY REPORT) - provides a weekly review of racing activity, both on and off the track.

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACTS:

FROM TOOWOOMBA (May 7):

Stewards questioned jockey P. Holmes in relation to his riding of GOLD DEAL near the 200m whereby there appeared to be an opportunity for him to improve into a run between HIDDEN DANCER and CAMBO'S MATE, however jockey Holmes continued to shift to the outside of CAMBO'S MATE at that point of the race. P. Holmes advised that at its most recent start at the Gold Coast on 19 April where he rode the gelding, it was reluctant to improve into the race between runners and therefore today he was of the view that it would be more advantageous to shift to the outside of CAMBO'S MATE to enable his mount clear and uninterrupted running to the finish. P. Holmes further advised that as a result of this manoeuvre he also felt that this placed his mount in superior going over the concluding stages. (Race 3). *GOLD DEAL finished second, 0.30 lengths behind the winner.

FROM ROCKHAMPTON (May 8):

The declaration of correct weight was delayed to allow Jockey S. McCullum and a part-owner of MISTABLISTA, which finished 5th, to view the available patrol films with a view to lodging an objection against LANSDOWNE ROAD being declared 3rd, alleging interference over the concluding stages. Having viewed the films they elected to proceed with the objection. Stewards established that near the 50 metres LANSDOWNE ROAD shifted out and brushed and made minor contact with MISTABLISTA, however this had not impeded Jockey McCullum from riding his mount along or lose any ground. In the circumstances the objection was dismissed and the judge's placings ordered to stand. Subsequently Jockey McCullum was fined $200 under A.R. 165(3) for lodging what the stewards deemed to be a frivolous protest. (Race 1).

Leaving the 400 metres SUNDAY SAGA (D. Missen) laid in and made contact with ROCKET BILLY REBEL, which attempted to shift out. ROCKET BILLY REBEL was then held up from the 300 metres until near the 200 metres and unable to obtain clear running. (Race 3). *ROCKET BILLY REBEL finished second 1.80 lengths behind the winner.

A post-race veterinary examination of KOKO CLANG (App. A. Allen) revealed that the horse had aggravated a pre-existing wound to its near fetlock. (Race 4). *KOKO CLANG finished fifth 2.40 lengths behind the winner.

Stewards inquired into an incident that occurred approaching the 900 metres. It was established that at that stage STAR MATERIAL (M. McGillivray) laid in and made contact with the running rail, became unbalanced and lost ground, which caused ABOVE US (B. Stewart), which was following, to be checked, shift out and take CYCLONE STEVE (D. Hayse) wider. (Race 5). *ABOVE US went on to win the race.

Near the 900 metres PEGUNNY SPUR (C. Spry) shifted in marginally when insufficiently clear of KAPUTSKI (D. Missen), which was tightened for room and taken in onto VANCOUVER GOLD (A. Coome), which was eased. (Race 7). *VANCOUVER GOLD finished second 0.20 lengths behind the winner.

Stewards sought an explanation from Jockey C. Spry as to the reason PEGUNNY SPUR blundered near the 600m. Jockey Spry stated that at that stage he felt that the gelding had shifted out to a 3-wide position and had changed stride. On viewing the patrol film of the incident it was ascertained that the offside foreleg of PEGUNNY SPUR had made contact with its near foreleg, causing it to slip and become extremely unbalanced. Jockey Spry added that from that stage the gelding yielded ground. A post-race veterinary examination of PEGUNNY SPUR revealed that the gelding had sustained a wound above its off-fore fetlock and swelling in pastern region and had lost the off-fore plate. Trainer M. Tremble will be advised that he must provide a veterinary clearance prior to PEGUNNY SPUR being permitted to race again. (Race 7). *PENGUNNY SPUR finished last.

FROM IPSWICH (May 9).

Stewards questioned apprentice S. Payne in relation to his riding of OVER THE CHOICE, in particular his whip use over the final 100m. After hearing submissions from Jockeys Advocate S. Connections were advised that the results of an endoscopic examination and a veterinary clearance for ABSINTHE MINDED must be provided before the filly is permitted to race again. (Race 5). *ABSINTHEMINDED, a $2.70 favourite, finished second last 8.10 lengths behind the winner.

When questioned regarding the tactics adopted on LEVER LEVER, G. Colless advised stewards that after being caught wide he elected to ease the horse back and as a result LEVER LEVER raced further back than anticipated. Stewards noted his explanation. (Race 6). *LEVER LEVER finished second one length behind the winner.

When questioned regarding the tactics adopted on MAIN STREET, which raced back in the field, which is in contrast to its usual racing pattern of going forward, J. Stewards noted his explanation. (Race 6). *MAIN STREET finished fourth 4.40 lengths behind the winner.

ROCKWELL (V. Colgan), which was initially a little slow to begin, was then checked when inconvenienced by KOKADOODLEDOO (J. Orman), which shifted out slightly, and KERRICAIT (M. Hellyer), which shifted in, resulting in ROCKWELL racing further back than anticipated. (Race 7). *ROCKWELL, a $1.40 strong favourite, finished second two lengths behind the winner.

When questioned regarding the tactics adopted on TUNED IN, which led today, in contrast to its previous runs, T. Harrison stated that she was under no specific instructions to lead on the horse today, other than to race in a forward position if possible, which had been the instructions for the horse's previous runs whilst under the care of trainer K. Hickmott. Mr Hickmott confirmed those instructions and whilst he anticipated the horse racing in a forward position, it was not the intention to lead. Stewards noted the explanations, however reminded Mr Hickmott of his obligation to inform stewards should there be any variation in the horse's racing pattern. (Race 7). *TUNED IN, a $21 chance, won the race.

When questioned, D. Browne stated that BUFFERING did not begin as well as he expected and took some time under heavy riding to improve into a forward position when in his opinion, even when it has been slow to begin, the horse usually is quick to muster early speed. He added that during the middle stages BUFFERING travelled comfortably and responded to his riding rounding the home turn, however found the line only fairly and in his opinion was flat in its finishing performance. (Race 7). *BUFFERING, the $1.75 favourite finished third 1.30 lengths behind the winner.

Stewards sought an explanation from trainer N. Mayfield-Smith regarding the improved performance of FAMOUS SEAMUS today. Mr Mayfield-Smith stated that the horse had worked well leading up to today's race and has raced best in the past when able to make its run to the outside of other horses. Mr Mayfield-Smith added that the gelding may not have appreciated racing a short time after arriving in Brisbane at its last start, adding that the horse appreciated the racing surface today and he was confident of its winning chances. (Race 7). *FAMOUS SEAMUS won the race.

After viewing the stewards' patrol footage, J. McDonald, the rider of 2nd placegetter METALLURGICAL, lodged an objection against PURE PURRFECTION (J. Byrne) being declared the winner, alleging interference near the 400m. After taking evidence from all parties concerned and viewing the videos, stewards were of the opinion that METALLURGICAL had not established a run to the inside of PURE PURRFECTION at that point and dismissed the objection and declared correct weight on the Judge's placings. At a subsequent inquiry jockey McDonald was fined $200 for lodging a frivolous protest. (Race 8).

(Race 4). *RED DIAMONDS finished fifth 3.20 lengths behind the winner,

When questioned as to the disappointing performance of IF EVER App Fawke stated that his instructions were to lead today. App Fawke added that due to the tempo being set by NEOMAGIC in the early stages he attempted to restrain IF EVER in an attempt to ease the tempo however, the gelding commenced to over-race and refused to settle during the early and middle stages of the race. App Fawke was of the view that IF EVER may have failed to handle the step up in distance to 1400m but noted that the racing manners of IF EVER may have contributed to its failure to finish the race off as expected. Trainer J. Morrisey was of the view that IF EVER is better suited when able to lead of its own accord and would issue instructions to this effect in the future. (Race 5). *IF EVER finished sixth 6.10 lengths behind the winner.

When questioned as to the overall performance of MISHANI PERSUADER App R. Vigar stated his intention was to have the gelding take up a handy position. App Vigar added that despite his efforts MISHANI PERSUADER was unable to muster the necessary speed to maintain that position and as a result he allowed the gelding to settle towards the rear of the field. App Vigar further added that passing the 600m he placed MISHANI PERSUADER under pressure but it failed to respond to his riding and it was not until passing the 200m when he applied the whip that the gelding commenced to respond and as a result finished the race off well. Both App Vigar and trainer L. Ross were of the view that MISHANI PERSUADER would benefit from a step up in distance at its next start. Mr Ross noted that MISHANI PERSUADER had previously not performed well when first up from a spell. The explanation was noted. (Race 6). *MISHANI PERSUADER finished seventh four lengths behind the winner.

When questioned as to the tactics adopted on CHOSEN TALENT, particularly rounding the home turn when the gelding was allowed to shift wider on the track thereby allowing SPURS AND SASHES (App T. Wolfgram) to improve to its inside, App A. Hearn stated he was specifically instructed to shift to the middle of the track upon straightening as connections were of the view that the going was better on that part of the track. Trainer S. Morrisey confirmed these instructions, which were issued as his opinion was that this today's pattern of racing suited such instructions. (Race 8). *CHOSEN TALENT finished fifth 3.80 lengths behind the winner.

When questioned as to the tactics adopted on TERTIARY, particularly why the mare settled further back in the field today in contrast to its recent pattern of racing, App S. Stewart was advised by stewards to at all times leave sufficient racing room for runners to his inside. (Race 1). *LORD BEAUFORT, the 3.20 favourite, finished second 0.10 lengths behind the winner.

FROM ROCKHAMPTON (May 10):

When Jockey D. Missen reported that he was to be overweight for PALAIS COURT in Race 3 and for BAGINIQUE in Race 4, stewards inquired into the circumstances. Jockey Missen stated that after encountering difficulty with flights he arrived late into Rockhampton and was unable to follow his usual weight loss regime. Stewards sought an explanation from Jockey C. Whiteley regarding his riding of VELONMAARA over the concluding stages. Jockey Whiteley stated that from approximately the 400 metres he was held up and unable to obtain clear running. Jockey Whiteley said that when a run became available between MAFIA PRINCESS and PERMISSION GRANTED near the 300 metres, VELONMAARA did not improve into the run and at that stage MAFIA PRINCESS shifted out and his was obliged to shift in. Shortly after this he shifted in further away from the heels of SECURITY SAM (C. McIver), which was tiring, and VELONMAARA was not able to be fully tested in the run to the line. (Race 4). *VELONMAARA finished sixth 2.60 lengths behind the winner.

Near the 900 metres SCHRAPNEL GULLY (C Pye) in taking up a forward position shifted in marginally. At the same time, CYCLONE BILLY (T. O'Hara) also shifted in marginally and caused PLUM BOB (App. M. McGillivray) to be tightened for room. PLUM BOB over-reacted to the incident and lost some ground. Due to the evidence available, Stewards were unable to apportion blame to any one rider, nevertheless all riders involved in the incident were advised to exercise greater care. (Race 7).

FROM CAIRNS (May 10):

When no rider was declared and no other rider was available at the weight stewards permitted A Spradau to ride MR SAUVAGE 3.kg over its declared weight. (Race 2). *MR SAUCAGE finished third 6.80 lengths behind the winner.

Stewards considered an objection lodged by D Ballard rider of 2nd placegetter EASTLINE against the declared winner BIANCO ROSSA (T Chambers) alleging interference in the back and home straights. On the evidence it was established that on two occasions BIANCO ROSSA shifted out and made contact with EASTLINE passing the 1100m and that shortly after straightening BIANCO ROSSA shifted out towards EASTLINE however did not impede on that runner. Bearing in mind the minor nature of the interference and the manner in which both horses ran to the finish, stewards could not be comfortably satisfied that had the interference not occurred EASTLINE would have beaten BIANCO ROSSA therefore the objection was dismissed. (Race 4).

Stewards questioned App T Tincknell (FASTER BUSTER) regarding the tactics she adopted in the early and middle stages. App T Tincknell explained that she had been instructed to ride FASTER BUSTER in a rearward position with cover in accordance with the gelding's established racing pattern. She said that shortly after the start she was able to restrain FASTER BUSTER and take up a position at the rear of the field where the gelding travelled comfortably. When questioned to as why she did not attempt to maintain racing on the back of the field passing the 800 metres App T Tincknell said that she was aware that she was some 4 lengths from the field however was of the opinion that had she improved from this point FASTER BUSTER would not have been left with a finishing effort. Trainer Mr P Inwood confirmed the instruction issued and expressed satisfaction with the ride. Stewards advised App Tincknell that she should have made more of an effort to remain racing on the back of the small field in a moderately run race. (Race 4). *FASTER BUSTER finished third in a four horse race, 2.60 lengths behind the winner

FROM OAKLEY AMATEUR PICNIC (May 10):

O'Brien rider of MISS TYPIN, regarding her riding of the mare in particular the reasons why she elected to race in a four deep position outside the leaders for the majority of the event. Ms O'Brien stated that she was mindful of her instructions to lead on the mare, however after riding forward and when unable to obtain the lead comfortably after runners had improved to her inside, she was forced to race wide and was reluctant to restrain and find a position with cover at that stage as it was a thousand metre event. Stewards noted the comments. (Race 2).

Correct weight was delayed to allow J. Missen to view the films to obtain whether he had grounds to protest against TORNADOES being declared the winner, after viewing the films J. Missen declined to proceed. (Race 4).

When asked to comment on the performance and tactics on BOARDWALK (T. Bell), trainer J. Edwards indicated that he had advised jockey Bell that the gelding does not possess a sprint and instructed him to improve into the race early if the pace was only steady. Jockey Bell explained that he was mindful of Mr Edwards' instructions that the horse was not a sit-and-sprint horse and in the early stages when it appeared that the race was panning out in that fashion, he thought that it was in the best interests to improve the horse three wide and assume a position outside the lead passing the 1000m. He added that when asked for an effort in the home straight, the horse only finished the race off fairly and he had recommended to connections to consider giving the gelding a brief break from racing to freshen the horse up. (Race 1). *BOARDWALK finished fifth in a six horse field, 3.10 lengths behind the winner.

Trainer A. Jones was questioned regarding the improved performance of CLONMACNOISE. Mr Jones explained that the gelding is best suited when able to lead and dictate the tempo of the race and is also suited by the riding style of G. Killen. He added that CLONMACNOISE performs best on rain-affected tracks. (Race 1). *CLONMACNOISE ($11) won the race.

R. McMahon was questioned regarding his riding of WIDOW'S WALK and also the overall performance of that runner. Jockey McMahon stated that the filly raced greenly throughout and when leaving the 500m was held up and had to be steadied from the heels of the weakening SANWAHKIN. A short distance later he was obliged to check WIDOW'S WALK after riding vigorously in an attempt to secure clear running between SWISS MUSIC and the weakening SANWAHKIN. Stewards advised jockey McMahon that in the circumstances they did not believe there was sufficient room for him to attempt to secure this run and advised him to exercise more care in similar circumstances. Jockey McMahon further added that in the home straight, after obtaining clear running outside PURE FETISH (K. Wharton), that horse shifted out under pressure and he attempted to improve to the inside of PURE FETISH, however that filly again shifted ground back to the inside, causing him to direct WIDOW'S WALK out around that horse and WIDOW'S WALK raced greenly for the remainder of the event, however found the line strongly. Jockey McMahon was also admonished for failing to ride his mount out over the concluding stages. Prior to the declaration of correct weight, C. Munce, rider of ROCBOLT, placed 4th by the Judge, made an application that his mount be declared a non-runner as it had been denied a fair start. After viewing the patrol footage of the start and taking further evidence from the starter, Stewards found that the front barrier gates of ROCBOLT did not open at the same time as the gates of all other runners had opened, resulting in ROCBOLT losing considerable ground at the start. Accordingly, stewards ruled that ROCBOLT had not been afforded an opportunity to jump with the remainder of the field, and in the opinion of stewards this had a material effect on the horse's finishing position. ROCBOLT was therefore declared a non-runner under the provisions of AR. 134A (Race 7).

FROM CHARTERS TOWERS (May 11):

All male riders engaged at today's meeting provided a sample of their urine which will be sent to Racing Analytical Services Ltd for analysis. (General).

In assessing penalty stewards took into account Mr Manzelmann's exemplary record in regard to this rule. A post-race veterinary examination of CHESTER ROCKET (C-M Pye), which was slow to begin and was beaten 23 lengths, did not reveal any abnormalities. Trainer J. Manzelmann was told that a warning will be placed on the gelding for being non-competitive. (Race 2).

Jockey A. Coome, the rider of ALPINE GOLD, was reminded of his obligation under A.R. 137(b) to ride his mounts out to the finish. (Race 2). *ALPINE GOLD finished sixth, 3.80 lengths behind the fifth placed runner and 2.80 lengths in front of the seventh placed runner.

Coome). *HOLDONTOYAHORSES finished second 1.50 lengths behind the winner.

Acting on a confirmed phone call advising that PEEL'EM FIRST had injured itself in the float en route to the course, stewards ordered the late withdrawal of the filly. (Race 5).

Stewards considered an objection lodged by Jockey M. Usher, the rider of OPRAH, which finished 5th, against GRIZZLE (App. K. Aho) being declared 3rd, alleging interference over the final 100 metres. After taking evidence from the parties involved, viewing the official patrol films and acting on their own observations, stewards established that approaching the 100 metres GRIZZLE (A. K. Aho) shifted out and made contact with OPRAH . At the 40 metres TABASCO FORCE (F. Edwards shifted out , taking GRIZZLE out onto OPRAH. Bearing in mind the margin of 1 length between the two runners at the finish and the manner in which they finished the race off, stewards could not be comfortably satisfied that OPRAH would have finished ahead of GRIZZLE had the interference not occurred, and accordingly the protest was dismissed and correct weight was given on the judge's placings. (Race 7).
