THE STRADBROKE WRAP - STEWARDS' REPORT

By Graham Potter | Monday, June 9, 2014

Extracts from the Stewards’ Report from Stradbroke day at Eagle Farm on Saturday June 7.

GENERAL:

Trainer C. Waller was questioned regarding his late nomination of both TROMSO and COUP AY TEE, which were given top weights of 59kg and 58.5kg respectively, for the James Boag's Premium Strawberry Road Handicap, and his subsequent non-acceptance with both horses, which resulted in the weights of other acceptors being raised. Mr Waller explained that both these horses were considered chances to come to Brisbane as he was of the opinion that the field was not overly strong. He added that it was not his intention to affect the weights. His explanation was noted.

*Waller also originally had EIGELSTEIN in the Strawberry Road Handicap. The gelding ultimately bypassed the race in favour of competing on his home turf in Sydney where he won a Benchmark 94 Handicap at a starting price of $5.50. Waller saddled the trifecta in that race.

Race 1: AMBASSADOR TRAVEL HAMPDEN STAKES - 1200m:

Near the 1100m LIMEHILLS (J. Byrne) dipped after clipping the heels of FREEZETHEMILLIONS (M. Rodd), which shifted out marginally. LIMEHILLS and FREEZETHEMILLIONS over-raced in the early stages. *LIMEHILLS and FREEZETHEMILLIONS finished a close-up second and third being beating by 0.80 lengths and one length respectively by the winner SPORTS EDITION.

For some distance between the 300m and 100m TALES OF FASHION (C. Schofield) was unable to improve. *TALES OF FASHION finished 3.60 lengths behind the winner.

Race 3: BEST SECURITY DAYBREAK LOVER - 1600m

SIR MOMENTS (T. Bell) was slow to begin. In the straight SIR MOMENTS hung in badly and proved difficult to ride. *SIR MOMENTS won the race, coming from last to first, by 0.50 lengths.

ALL THINGS IN TIME (H. Bowman) bled from both nostrils. Trainer J. Thompson was advised that ALL THINGS IN TIME would be ineligible to start for 3 months, and before resuming racing must perform satisfactorily in a 1000m gallop in the presence of a steward.

Race 4: EVERGREEN TURF LIGHTNING H'CAP - 1000m

METALLURGICAL (R. Wiggins), FACILE TIGRE (E. Wilkinson), LIESELE (G. Boss) and DIAMOND TRAIL (M. Hellyer) were slow into stride.

Near the 700m BIG MONEY (T. Bell) was steadied when crowded to the inside of IONA FAST ONE (P. Holmes), which shifted in and away from LIESELE. *BIG MONEY finished second 0.20 lengths behind the winner CAPE KIDNAPPERS.

SEEKING MORE (C. Munce) raced extremely wide and hung out badly rounding the home turn. *SEEKING MORE finished fifth 1.30 lengths behind the winner.

For some distance in the early part of the straight METALLURGICAL was badly held up until near the 250m. *METALLURGICAL finished fourth 1.20 lengths behind the winner.

Race 5: VIRBAC ANIMAL HEALTH DANE RIPPER STAKES - 1400m

Near the 900m BELLE DE COEUR (M. Rodd) was steadied from the heels of COSMIC ENDEAVOUR (T. Berry). MYAMIRA, which was following BELLE DE COEUR, had to be steadied in consequence. *COSMIC ENDEAVOUR and BELLE DE COEUR finished first and third respectively with the winner beating BELLE DE COEUR by 2.60 lengths.

For some distance after the 300m LUCKY LAGO (D. Browne) was crowded for room between FIRE UP FIFI and PERON, which was endeavouring to shift out to find clear running. *LUCKY LAGO finished unplaced 4.70 lengths behind the winner.

M. Rodd (BELLE DE COEUR) was reprimanded for permitting his mount to improve into a narrow run and then shift out near the 300m resulting in PLUCKY BELLE, which was commencing to give ground, being crowded for room and being steadied.

Race 6: TATTS GROUP J.J. ATKINS - 1600m

Correct weight was delayed to allow N. Rawiller, the rider of 2nd placegetter BRAZEN BEAU, the opportunity of viewing the head-on footage in the straight. After viewing the video, N. Rawiller indicated that he did not wish to proceed with an objection and correct weight was declared.

On jumping, ALMALAD (T. Berry) and MOHAVE (H. Bowman) bumped heavily.

In the early and middle stages LOOKS LIKE THE CAT (D. Browne) and EMOTIONS IN MOTION (T. Harrison) over-raced badly.

In the early stages TIME FOR WAR (T. Angland) raced keenly and proved very difficult to settle. *TIME FOR WAR finished sixth 2.40 lengths behind the winner ALMALAD.

Approaching the 100m LOOKS LIKE THE CAT (D. Browne) was steadied and shifted out across the heels of ALMALAD. *LOOKS LIKE THE CAT finished third 0.30 lengths behind the winner.

Race 7: CHANNEL SEVEN QUEENSLAND DERBY - 2400m

Connections advised that it will be the intention to have TELEPATHIC (M. Du Plessis) ridden back in the field.

Connections advised that ROCK DIVA (Z. Purton) would be ridden in a more forward position if circumstances permit.

After viewing the stewards' patrol footage, M. Rodd, the rider of 6th placegetter AMEXED, lodged an objection against 5th placegetter BRING BACK (G. Boss), alleging interference near the 250m. After taking evidence from all parties and viewing all available videos, stewards were of the view that after the 300m BRING BACK commenced to shift out for some distance and in doing so carried AMEXED out where it was then placed in restricted room for a considerable distance between BRING BACK and VILANOVA (N. Rawiller). As a result, AMEXED was inconvenienced and then had to be shifted around the heels of VILANOVA to then finish the race off. As the stewards were of the view that the inconvenience caused to AMEXED by BRING BACK shifting out exceeded the long neck margin between the two horses at the finish, the protest was upheld and correct weight was declared on the amended placings of 7, 4, 2, 16, 1 and 6. At a subsequent inquiry, G. Boss was reprimanded for failing to stop riding and straighten his mount.

For a considerable distance in the middle stages ROCK DIVA over-raced badly and got its head up on a number of occasions. Near the 600m ROCK DIVA, which was still over-racing, was checked off the heels of BRING BACK.

Just prior to straightening TAKEWING (B. Shinn) was badly held up at the heels of PINSTRIPE LANE (D. Oliver). *TAKEWING finished eighth 3.40 lengths behind the winner SONNTAG.

For some distance in the early part of the straight ROCK DIVA had difficulty obtaining clear running. *ROCK DIVA finished fourth 1.20 lengths behind the winner.

D. Browne (OUR UNCLE ARCHIE) explained that in the early stages of the race the gelding appeared to resent any endeavour to correct it from hanging and the more he did so the worse it hung. He said because of the manner in which it was racing down the back straight, he had little control and therefore he elected from the 1000m to retire the gelding from the race. Trainer S. Englebrecht was advised that the gelding will be required to perform satisfactorily in an official barrier trial before being permitted to race again. Mr Englebrecht indicated that the horse would now be sent for a spell. A post-race veterinary examination of OUR UNCLE ARCHIE revealed no abnormalities.

N. Rawiller (VILANOVA) was fined $500 for using the whip in a forehand manner more than 5 times prior to the 100m. *VILANOVA finished third 0.70 lengths behind the winner.

Stewards will interview C. Schofield (SONNTAG) regarding his use of the whip.

Race 8: AAMI STRADBROKE - 1400m

All runners in the Stradbroke were examined by the veterinary surgeon yesterday, Friday, 6 June 2014. Further veterinary examinations of SACRED STAR and CONSERVATORIUM were conducted this morning and both horses were passed to race.

SACRED STAR was inspected by the veterinary surgeon at the barriers and cleared to race.

For some distance in the early stages HUCKLEBUCK (D. Tourneur) over-raced badly and then was steadied off the heels of SRIKANDI near the 1000m.

Approaching the 1000m CONSERVATORIUM (J. Bowditch) began to over-race after being bumped by KNOYDART. SPIRIT OF BOOM, which was following CONSERVATORIUM, had to be steadied.

Near the 700m SPIRIT OF BOOM raced in restricted room inside CONSERVATORIUM. *SPIRIT OF BOOM finished fourth 1.30 lengths behind the winner RIVER LAD.

On straightening, SMOKIN' JOEY (B. Melham) endeavoured to shift wider on the track, however it was unable to find clear running and consequently was shifted back in to improve. *SMOKIN’ JOEY finished eighth 4.10 lengths behind the winner.

D. Tourneur (HUCKLEBUCK) explained that it was anticipated to try and ride the horse with cover. He said that for a considerable distance in the early stages he endeavoured to restrain to allow SRIKANDI to cross him, however HUCKLEBUCK continued to race very fiercely and proved very difficult to settle. *HUCKLEBUCK finished sixth two lengths behind the winner.

T. Bell (SACRED STAR) was fined $200 for failing to weigh in for 5th.

Race 9: CROSER BRISBANE CUP - 2400m

Consideration was given to a protest lodged by R. Wiggins, the rider of 5th placegetter PRETTY PINS, against MR O'CEIRIN (B. Shinn) being declared 4th, alleging interference from the 300m to the 200m. On the evidence it was established that from the 300m MR O'CEIRIN commenced to shift out whilst being ridden along and at all stages whilst doing so carried PRETTY PINS wider. As the stewards were of the view that PRETTY PINS was inconvenienced by the shift, bearing in mind the half head margin, stewards upheld the protest and declared correct weight on the amended placings of 7, 1, 5, 8 and 4. At a subsequent inquiry, B. Shinn was reprimanded for failing to stop riding and straighten his mount.

B. Shinn (MR O'CEIRIN) explained that the horse was caught wide in the early stages, therefore he elected from the 1400m to allow it to stride forward where it eventually raced outside the lead. When asked in relation to the tempo of the race quickening from the 1000m, B. Shinn stated that at that stage of the race he felt his mount was travelling very comfortably and was satisfied with tempo being set. He said from the 600m when SKYSOBLUE (J. Byrne) commenced to weaken, he allowed his mount to stride forward when he said no sooner did the horse do this than on straightening it did not continue to accelerate as he had hoped and then in the home straight, in his opinion, was one-paced in its finishing effort. Trainer C. Maher advised that MR O'CEIRIN is a good stayer and does not possess a sprint and he was not disappointed that jockey Shinn allowed it to slide forward to race outside the leader.

HISTORIAN (T. Angland) cast the near fore plate during the race. A post-race veterinary examination of HISTORIAN revealed the gelding to be lame in the near foreleg. Connections will be advised that a veterinary certificate of fitness must be provided before HISTORIAN is eligible to race again.
