7 DAYS (THE WEDNESDAY REPORT): JUNE 11 - JUNE 17 STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACTS

By Graham Potter | Wednesday, June 18, 2014

STEWARDS REPORTS EXTRACTS:

FROM DOOMBEN (JUNE 11):

Consideration was given to a protest lodged by C. Small, the rider of DUBAI GEE EYE, placed 2nd by the Judge, against REFECTORY (C. Munce) being declared the winner, alleging interference near the 400m. On the evidence it was established that leading up to that point REFECTORY commenced to hang out slightly and as such C. Small elected to shift in his mount in to improve to the inside of REFECTORY. REFECTORY then shifted back in slightly, resulting in DUBAI GEE EYE being crowded and having to be held up for some distance. Whilst Stewards were of the view that DUBAI GEE EYE did receive slight crowding at that time, they were not fully satisfied that DUBAI GE EYE was entitled to shift to the inside of REFECTORY, and bearing in mind the length and a quarter margin between the two horses at the finish, the protest was dismissed. (Race 1)

At a subsequent inquiry C. Small, the rider of DUBAI GEE EYE, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under AR. 137(a) in that approaching the 400m he directed his mount in to the inside of the heels of REFECTORY to avail himself of a run and in doing so was not sufficiently clear of BACK TO ABILENE (T. Wolfgram), which had improved to the inside of DUBAI GEE EYE, resulting in BACK TO ABILENE being crowded for room and having to be checked. (See STEWARDS’ SUSPENSIONS). (Race 1).

Trainer B. Laming, representing trainer R. Laming (REFECTORY), stated that since the horse has been in their care, its last three runs for the stable were on heavy tracks and the intention had been in all of these starts to race in a forward position, however being over shorter distances at its first two of those runs, the horse was unable to muster speed. He said with the horse racing back today for the first time on a good surface, the instructions for C. Munce were to ride the horse where it was comfortable. Jockey C. Munce stated that the horse began awkwardly but then in the early stages it strode forward to lead and as it was travelling comfortably, he elected to allow it to remain racing in this position. He said that down the back he was concerned with the tempo being set and despite his endeavours to restrain the horse, it did not want to settle and raced more keenly than he would have liked. (*REFECTORY started favourite at $2.40). (Race 1).

Apprentice T. Harrison (OUR BAJA) explained that the intention today was for the horse to be ridden in a handy position. She said that from the start she received a bump from her outside and then as a number of runners drawn to her inside improved, she elected to remain racing off the fence in the hope that she may be able to improve her position from midfield in the middle stages. She said down the back OUR BAJA raced very keenly and was difficult to settle. She added that after the 600m she was unable to improve when racing to the inside of LIDO and awkwardly inside the heels of RED HOT DREAM. She further added that in the straight she was able to shift OUR BAJA our where it only finished off moderately. Apprentice Harrison further explained that she had reported to trainer Mr T. Bailey that they endeavour to step the filly up in distance and try to have the horse ridden in a more handy position, which may allow it to settle better. (*OUR BAJA, the $2.60 favourite, finished third, 4.10 lengths behind the winner MANARIKI). (Race 2).

Approaching the first turn ANNAMAN was crowded for room between HIDDEN ABILITY (C. Munce), which shifted out slightly, and TRAVESTON GIRL (T. Harrison), which changed stride and then shifted in when not properly clear. Apprentice Harrison was reprimanded and told to ensure she provides adequate racing room to runners to her inside. When ANNAMAN steadied, it then shifted out abruptly, resulting in MISS COVER GIRL being checked severely. (Race 3).

Near the 600m ALEXSTRASZA was crowded and TRAVESTON GIRL had to be steadied when crowded on the inside of MYWAYORTHEHIGHWAY, which shifted in whilst hanging. After this, MYWAYORTHEHIGHWAY continued to lay in, resulting in TRAVESTON GIRL and ALEXSTRASZA racing tight for some distance. Apprentice L. Tarrant (MYWAYORTHEHIGHWAY) was reprimanded and told than in future he would be expected to make far greater effort than he did on this occasion. (*MYWAYORTHEHIGHWAY finished third 2.10 lengths behind the winner). (Race 3).

FROM TOWNSVILLE (June 12):

At various times throughout the day stewards conducted inspections of the stables of Townsville trainers.

When App. J. Kuskopf was unable to fulfil her engagement for personal reasons, and no suitable apprentice rider was available, Jockey F. Edwards was substituted as the rider of PATTO'S GIRL. (PATTO’S GIRL finished unplaced). (Race 1)

Following the race Jockey P. Cullen confirmed that at the 600 metres RATTLER'S LAD was struck by a dirt clod and then blundered. (Race 5).

FROM DOOMBEN (JUNE 13):

Connections advised that FULL HAMMER would be ridden in a more forward position if circumstances permit. Despite the efforts of its rider, FULL HAMMER was unable to muster speed and settled at the rear of the field. FULL HAMMER (J. Morris) jumped away awkwardly. (*FULL HAMMER won the race by 4.30 lengths). (Race 1).

When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of ELIMINATOR, T. Bell stated that after receiving a bump from OCTANE FLYER (M. Cahill) shortly after straightening, the gelding failed to respond to his riding and, in his opinion, proved disappointing. He was of the view that the horse may not have performed well after being second-up from a spell today. Trainer G. Heinrich noted that ELIMINATOR had some mucus in the nearside nostril following the race and as such would have blood tests performed, the results of which would be reported to stewards. (*ELIMINATOR finished seventh 2.10 lengths behind the winner). (Race 4).

From the 600m, BIG WHEELS (L. Tarrant) was unable to improve when awkwardly placed at the heels of BEAU BOY until soon after straightening. BIG WHEELS again had difficulty securing clear running in the home straight until approaching the 200m. (*BIG WHEELS started favourite at $2. And finished fifth, 5.50 lengths behind the winner). (Race 6).

J. Byrne was asked to explain the disappointing performance of ELITE ECHELON. Jockey Byrne stated that the horse travelled well throughout the event and he was confident when rounding the home turn, however near the 400m he received contact from BEAU BOY, which shifted out in an attempt to obtain clear running. He stated that ELITE ECHELON then laid in slightly and made contact with EASY LAGER and failed to respond to his riding from that point and proved disappointing in the run to the line. Trainer R. McCall was unable to explain the performance other than to say the gelding has previously had one start at Doomben and was disappointing on that occasion. He indicated he would monitor the horse's progress in the following days and would report any abnormalities to stewards. A post race veterinary examination of ELITE ECHELON failed to reveal any significant abnormalities. (*ELITE ECHELON finished unplaced 9.70 lengths behind the winner). (Race 6).

A post race veterinary examination of PLATINUM STATE revealed the horse had pulled up in a distressed state. (*PLATINUM STATE finished fourth 5.40 lengths behind the winner). (Race 6).

PULSAR (T. Harrison) slipped at the start and began awkwardly. (*PULSAR won the race by 1.30 lengths). (Race 7).

T. Bell reported that the saddle on CLEVER ONE slipped shortly after leaving the barriers, placing him at a disadvantage for the remainder of the race. (*CLEVER ONE finished unplaced 3.40 lengths behind the winner). (Race 7).

T. Bell was questioned regarding the riding tactics on WRITTEN ABOVE ALL, particularly from the 600m until soon after straightening. T. Bell explained as the tempo of the race was slow in the middle stages he attempted to save ground approaching the home turn to the inside of BARON DOURO (P. Holmes), however when BARON DOURO shifted back towards the rail approaching the 400m he was obliged to shift to the outside in order to improve. He added that WRITTEN ABOVE ALL worked to the line well and felt it would be better suited in races with a more genuine tempo throughout. The explanation was noted. (*WRITTEN ABOVE ALL finished sixth 3.40 lengths behind the winner). (Race 8).

FROM IPSWICH (JUNE 14):

Connections advised that LA TIKKA ROSA (J. Byrne), which went forward at its last start, would be ridden back in the field today. The horse was ridden accordingly. (*LA TIKKA ROSA won the race by two lengths at a starting price of $6.50). (Race 1).
Prior to the start LUCKY BAA (E. Wilkinson) brushed the front gate, which opened. The veterinary surgeon was satisfied that LUCKY BAA had suffered no injury and was allowed to start. (*LUCKY BAA, the $3.80 favourite, finished third 2.10 lengths behind the winner). (Race 1).

TIME TO PLUNDER (A. Holt) was slow to begin. TIME TO PLUNDER was held up for clear running rounding the home turn. (*TIME TO PLUNDER finished unplaced 4.30 lengths behind the winner).

A post-race veterinary examination of LENNIE'S CHOICE (C. Munce) revealed the gelding to have a slower than normal post-race recovery. (*LENNIES’S CHOICE finished tailed off). (Race 1).

A post-race veterinary examination of I'M COOL revealed that the gelding had bled from the offside nostril. Trainer D. Forster was advised that I'M COOL must perform satisfactorily in a gallop over 1000m in the presence of a steward prior to being permitted to resume racing. (*I’M COOL finished seventh 4.20 lengths behind the winner). (Race 1).

VIENNA ROYALE (J. Byrne) stood flat-footed at the start and lost considerable ground. Trainer T. Gollan was advised that a warning would be placed against the gelding's racing manners. (*VIENNA ROYALE finished sixth 1.60 lengths behind the winner). (Race 2).

When questioned regarding the performance of CELESTIAL DRAGON, T. Bell stated that although he had to pressure the horse to obtain the lead, this may have been a telling factor over the final stages, however, he was not entirely disappointed with the gelding's performance. (*CELESTIAL DRAGON, the $3.10 favourite, finished seventh 3.10 lengths behind the winner.

Trainer B. Laming advised that it would be the intention to have THE INVENTOR (M. Cahill) ridden in a forward position if circumstances permit. The horse was ridden accordingly. (*IHE INVENTOR, $8, won by 0.80 lengths).

Near the 300m SAMSILI (T. Bell) was buffeted and tightened for room between THE INVENTOR and HOW FAIRDINKUM, which shifted in and bumped the hind quarters of SAMSILI, resulting in HOW FAIRDINKUM becoming unbalanced. (*See STEWARDS SUSPENSIONS – Ipswich, June 14, Race 4).

When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of PICKABEE, T. Bell stated that the mare travelled well throughout until the pace steadied mid-race and the mare had a tendency to overrace. Jockey Bell added that the mare was having its first start in 4 weeks and may have peaked on its run over the concluding stages. (*PICKABEE, $8, finished tenth, 5.40 lengths behind the winner). (Race 5).

ELLAWISDOM (R. McMahon) began awkwardly, shifted in and bumped INTO THE RED (J. Taylor), forcing INTO THE RED in on to BLACK CASH (M. Cahill). Approaching the 1000m INTO THE RED was buffeted and made heavy contact with BLACK CASH when racing between that runner and STEEL ZIP (B. Stewart), which shifted in. (*See STEWARDS SUSPENSIONS – Ipswich June 14, Race 6). (*INTO THE RED, $9, finished eleventh, 7.90 lengths behind the winner). (Race 6).

A post-race veterinary examination of INTO THE RED revealed that the gelding had galloped on itself on the near-foreleg. (Race 6).

M. Cahill was afforded the opportunity to comment on the performance of BLACK CASH. Jockey Cahill stated that after receiving interference near the 1000m and again near the 600m, the gelding then failed to respond to his riding from a point near the 400m, however added that in the circumstances, as a result of the interference sustained, he was not entirely disappointed with the run. A post-race veterinary examination of BLACK CASH revealed no significant findings. (*BLACK CASH, the $4.40 second favourite, finished second last 7.90 lengths behind the winner). (Race 6).

BRADY 'N' ME (D. Dunn) began awkwardly and made heavy contact with WALKIN' TALL (T. Bell).
Near the 1000m FRIENDLY DRAGON had to be eased from the heels of SANTOYA CAT (J. Johnson), which was over-racing and also had to be restrained when taken in by WALKIN' TALL. Shortly after, SANTOYA CAT continued to over-race and shifted wider on the track. Although stewards accepted that SANTOYA CAT was over-racing, they nonetheless reprimanded T. Bell (WALKIN' TALL) and advised him that in future he should ensure he is fully clear when shifting ground. (*SANTOYA CAT, $16, finished seventh 4.40 lengths behind the winner. WALKING TALL, $6, finished eighth 4.50 lengths behind the winner). (Race 8).

T. Bell reported at scale that WALKIN' TALL, which led today, would be better suited racing with cover. A post-race veterinary examination of WALKIN' TALL revealed the gelding to have been galloped on on the near-hind leg. (Race 8).

FROM GOLD COAST (JUNE 14):

Leaving the 500m EM ONE was obliged to race in restricted room between VIV'S VEGAS (B El-Issa) and HIP TO BE SQUARE (N Evans) and in doing so made contact with the hindquarters of BLESS THIS ROSE resulting in BLESS THIS ROSE shifting in. A short distance later VIV'S VEGAS shifted out marginally causing EM ONE to be steadied and lose ground. Both Jockeys B El-Issa (VIV'S VEGAS) and N Evans (HIP TO BE SQUARE) were advised to exercise more care in similar circumstances in future. (Race 5).

When questioned as to his riding of VIV'S VEGAS rounding the home turn and in the early stages of the home straight, Jockey B El-Issa stated that he had difficulty obtaining clear running rounding the home turn when positioned to the inside of EM ONE. Jockey El-Issa added that in the early stages of the home straight VIV'S VEGAS was inclined to shift ground and as a result he was unable to fully pressure the filly at that point. His explanation was noted. (*VIV’S VEGAS, the $2.80 favourite, finished second 0.10 lengths behind the winner). (Race 5).

App. N Masuda reported that he was instructed to ride ZIZZELDO out of the barriers in an effort to obtain a forward position. However, when TUNED IN and FAMOUS GROUSE pressed forward to his outside he was content to allow those runners to cross forward of him. Approaching the 400m ZIZZELDO (N Masuda) attempted to shift out to improve but was unable to do so due to FLAME FIGHTER (T Wolfgram) racing to its outside. ZIZZELDO was then held up until approaching the 200m where it clipped the heels of FAMOUS GROUSE (S Fawke) and blundered badly. (*ZIZZELDO, $4.60, finished sixth, 1.60 lengths behind the winner). (Race 7).

Jockey T Wolfgram reported that his intention was to take up a position on the speed however FLAME FIGHTER was unable to muster the necessary speed in the early stages of the event despite his efforts. Jockey Wolfgram added that FLAME FIGHTER then commenced to over-race leaving the 900m. Jockey Wolfgram was of the view that FLAME FIGHTER may be better suited ridden with cover in future. (*FLAME FIGHTER, the $4 equal favourite, finished fourth, 0.40 lengths behind the winner. (Race 7).

When questioned regarding the tactics adopted on HEAD DRAGON, Jockey L Rolls stated his intention was to obtain a forward position however after beginning only fairly he was of the view that he would have been caught wide and as such he elected to obtain a mid-field position with cover. (*HEAD DRAGON, the $4 equal favourite, finished fifth, 1.20 lengths behind the winner). (Race 7).

Connections advised that WINGARA (C Whiteley) would be ridden more forward today if circumstances permit as the gelding had been slow to begin at its two previous starts and as such connections were of the view that it would perform better when pressured in the early stages of the event. WINGARA was subsequently ridden accordingly. Trainer M Dunn was reprimanded for failing to advise of the change of tactics by the prescribed time. (*WINGARA, an $11 chance, won by two lengths). (Race 8).

FROM SUNSHINE COAST (JUNE 14):

CANONGATE (D Missen) near the 800m shifted in when not clear of GOWAN BRAE (L. Tarrant), which was taken in onto the running line of REAL STING (A. Holt), causing that horse to be checked. (See STEWARDS SUSPENSIONS – Sunshine Coast, June 14, Race 1).

REAL STING (A. Holt) had difficulty securing clear running in the early stages of the home straight. (*The twice inconvenienced REAL STING, $5, finished sixth, 4.70 lengths behind the winner).

KEEP ON ROCKING (N Tomizawa) leaving the 1200m shifted in when not clear of LOST THIEF (M. Vance), forcing that horse in on to the running rail and causing it to be checked. (See STEWARDS SUSPENSIONS – Sunshine Coast, June 14, Race 1)

WICKED TEMPTATION (A. Best) laid in under pressure in the home straight and leaving the 100m inconvenienced LOST THIEF, which resulted in M. Vance having to stop riding LOST THIEF and shift out across the heels of WICKED TEMPTATION. A. Best, rider of WICKET TEMPTATION, was advised to exercise more care. (*The twice inconvenienced LOST THIEF, $6.50, finished fifth 4.30 lengths behind the winner). (Race 1).

Stewards asked D. Missen to comment on the performance of HOT AUGUSTA. He started that throughout the event the filly raced greenly, at times laying in and also laying out. He felt this could be attributed to HOT AUGUSTA having its first start racing in this direction. D. Missen added that he was forced to pressure his mount after leaving the 700m in order to hold its position and despite this the horse did finish the race off moderately. He was of the view that the filly would take benefit from the experience. (*HOT AUGUSTA, the $2.90 favourite, finished fifth, 8.10 lengths behind the winner). (Race 2).

Stewards inquired into the tactics and handling of NEXT ERA. Of concern to stewards was apprentice G. Goold's actions after having obtained clear running outside the heels of SMARTY VANCE (K. Wharton) when approaching the 300m and his apparent lack of vigour until approaching the 100m. Apprentice Goold explained that he had been instructed to ride the horse quietly at the tail of the field due to having drawn an awkward alley. He also had been advised that as the horse had jumped out and trialled on rain affected tracks and had a tendency to race awkwardly he should bear this in mind when riding the horse throughout the event. He stated when he improved rounding the home turn to the inside of PUNTERS JOURNEY he was held up at the heels of SMARTY VANCE until approaching the 300m. He explained that when obtaining clear running at that point NEXT ERA became awkward and changed stride on a number of occasions. G. Goold stated that this coupled with his instructions that the horse may not handle the rain affected conditions he felt that he should give the gelding time to balance up before placing pressure on the horse. He felt that this took about 50 metres. The instructions were confirmed by trainer G. Duncan who also indicated that he was satisfied with apprentice Goold's riding at this point of the race. Stewards after considering the evidence did accept that NEXT ERA changed stride on 2 occasions in close succession after leaving the 300m, however appeared to race tractably following this point. Stewards were not satisfied that apprentice Goold's riding from that point until approaching the 100m was acceptable, however given his riding instructions, the track conditions and apprentice Goold's status as an apprentice, afforded him the benefit of the doubt as to whether his actions were reasonable in the circumstances. Trainer G. Duncan was advised that when NEXT ERA has its next start he would be required to inform stewards of the tactics prior to starting, and also that he would be expected to justify his reasons if he intended starting the horse on a rain affected surface in the near future. (*NEXT ERA, the $4.40 second favourite, finished fifth 6.80 lengths behind the winner). (Race 4).

FATHER SHADY (L. Tarrant) was badly held up over the final 200m and was forced to check when improving into a tight run to the inside of SIZZLING SONG (S. Bogenhuber) near the 100m and went to the line without being fully tested. (*Father Shady, $15, finished fourth 3.40 lengths behind the winner). (Race 5).

INFAMOUS (A. Spinks) was held up for clear running at the heels of the weakening SEPT DE COEURS (K. Wharton) from the 150m until leaving the 100m. (*INFAMOUS, $17, finished fifth 4.20 lengths behind the winner). (Race 5).

When questioned, A. Butler stated that he was instructed to ride TWINZIG in a rearward position and he followed those instructions, however advised that in the early and middle stated the horse never travelled well in the heavy track conditions and, in his opinion, appeared to badly resent the kick back. (*TWINZIG, $5.50, finished tailed off). (Race 5).

Stewards asked trainer Mrs C. Hickey to explain the seemingly improved performance of the winner, SMALL TALK. She stated that at the horse's first start it drew poorly and as a result was very wide on the track and this had a detrimental effect on the overall performance. She advised since this start she has given the horse a further long jump-out and, in her view, the filly took benefit from that experience and with the more favourable barrier draw in today's event was able to secure a position on the fence in the lead and this resulted in tonight's forward showing. Stewards accepted the explanation tendered. (Race 6).

A. Butler advised that from the wide draw ORATRY travelled not better than 4 wide throughout the race and, in his opinion, the horse failed to handle the prevailing track conditions. (*ORATORY, a $2.50 favourite in a nine horse field, finished second last 12.30 lengths behind the winner). (Race 6).

FROM ROCKHAMPTON (JUNE 14):

TERMS OF TRADE (A. Coome) began awkwardly, jumped in and made contact with BAQABA (J. P. Stanley). Jockey A. Coome, the rider of TERMS OF TRADE, explained that after losing some ground at the start as runners had improved to his inside, rather than ride forward and be caught 3 wide, he elected to obtain a position further back than he had intended. (*TERMS OF TRADE, the $1.90 favourite), finished second beaten by a length. (Race 1).

When Jockey A. Coome was to be overweight and no other suitable rider was available at the weight, stewards permitted Jockey Coome to ride HAYYLER'S DRAGON overweight. (*HAYYLER’S DRAGON finished unplaced, 7.70 lengths behind the winner). (Race 6).

FROM KILCOY (JUNE 14):

Prior to the event P Blackwell, trainer of SHINZO MASHURANBO, advised he would be instructing his rider that the gelding be ridden on the speed. The horse was ridden accordingly before tiring near the 1000 metres. A post-race Vet examination of SHINZO MASHURANBO, which finished tailed off, revealed a poor post-race recovery rate. Trainer P Blackwell indicated it was his intention to retire the gelding, however was advised if these circumstances were to change SHINZO MISHURANBO would be required to trial satisfactorily prior to its next race start. (Race 2).

Stewards questioned App S Alam, rider of BAMBOO HOUSE, which weakened badly from the 500 metres and was beaten 20 lengths, regarding the amount of pressure he applied between the 900 metres and the 600 metres when racing outside the leader MIGHTYSUI. App S Alam advised he had been instructed to apply pressure from the 600 metres, however after settling in a forward position mid-race he elected to ride BAMBOO HOUSE forward from a point leaving the 900 metres. After viewing the patrol DVD and in the presence of jockey advocate Mr D Tanti, App Alam agreed with Stewards that given the established racing pattern of BAMBOO HOUSE he would have been better served not riding the gelding in such an aggressive manner at that stage of the race. (*BAMBOO HOUSE, was a $14 outsider in the six horse field). (Race 3).

After being loaded into the barriers, SILK AND SATIN (App T Williams) lunged forward and made contact with the front barrier partition. The filly was removed from the barriers, examined by the club Vet and subsequently passed fit to start. Near the 900 metres SILK AND SATIN, which was reluctant to hold its position when racing tightly to the inside of HOT TEMPO (APP B Derbyshire), became unbalanced and had to be steadied. (*SILK AND SATIN, $6, finished 12.00 lengths behind the winner). (Race 6).

Due to commitments of App A. Fancourt at the SCTC meeting, Stewards adjourned an inquiry into the reason for FIFTYSHADESDARKER having to be checked approaching the 400 metres to a time and date to be confirmed. (*FIFTYSHADESDARKER, the $2 favourite, finished fifth 10.20 lengths behind the runaway winner LITTLE FIGHTER). (Race 6).

FROM GOONDIWINDI (June 14):

Upon arrival on course at 11:30am Stewards downgraded the track to a Heavy 10. Due to the impending wet weather, Stewards elected to bring the starting time of all races forward with the final race run at 3:40pm.

As apprentice K Patch was to be overweight, she was replaced on her rides in races 3 and 5. As there were no other apprentices available Stewards permitted apprentice Patch to claim 0.5 kg in races 1 & 4 and 1.5kg in race 2, which was 1kg over her allotted riding weight.

Stewards questioned Trainer C Roberts in relation to the improved performance of CHART. Mr Roberts advised Stewards the CHART was having its 3rd run back from a 12 month spell today and as a result had derived a fitness benefit from its last 2 starts. Mr Roberts added that the gelding was dropping significantly in weight today and is a noted wet track performer which he believed were also major factors in the improved performance. Stewards noted the explanation. (*CHART, $4.40, won the race). (Race 3).

Stewards exceeded to a request from Trainer S McEwan to remove the pacifiers from CUPPA TEA LOVE due to the prevailing track conditions today. (*CUPPA TEA LOVE, $6, finished third 2.70 lengths behind the winner). (Race 4).

Prior to the declaration of correct weight Stewards considered an application from Jockey J Missen to have BIZARRE ROCK declared a non-runner on the grounds of being denied a fair start. After taking submissions from Jockey Missen and viewing the patrol films, Stewards found that the off side barrier gate bounced back after opening and as a result made contact with the shoulder of BIZARRE ROCK as it left the barriers. Stewards were of the view the inconvenience suffered to BIZARRE ROCK at the start was minimal and furthermore that this occurrence didn't materially affect the overall finishing position of BIZARRE ROCK and therefore confirmed the gelding as a definite runner. (*BIZARRE ROCK, $4, finished fifth, six lengths behind the winner). (Race 4).

Stewards questioned jockey J Missen in relation to his riding of WILLYWYNYA rounding the home turn, as to whether there was an opportunity to improve to the inside of SHOCTONIC sooner than he did after, being held up on the heels of that runner. Jockey Missen advised Stewards that approaching the home turn he positioned his mount slightly outside the heels of SHOCTONIC in anticipation of a run presenting to the outside of that runner upon straightening. Jockey Missen added that when SHOCTONIC laid out rounding the home turn it resulted in him being held up for a short distance before he was forced to alter course to the inside to obtain clear running in the home straight. Stewards noted the explanation. (*WILLYWYNYA, $6, finished second 0.20 lengths behind the winner). (Race 5).

FROM LONGREACH (JUNE 14):

NO INVOLVEMENT was a late withdrawal at midday when no rider was available. (Race 2).

DASHING DUNLOP was a late withdrawal at 1.00pm when no rider was available. (Race 3).

Stewards interviewed jockey/trainer D Rewald regarding the improved performance of the winner NOU CAMP as compared to its previous start where the gelding finished last. Trainer/jockey Rewald explained that at its previous start the gelding which was having its first start for him weakened from the 600m and resented the kickback from the sand track. He said that today NOU CAMP was much more relaxed and had worked well leading into the race. Stewards noted the explanation. (Race 3).

Owner-trainer Mr R Simpson was interviewed by Stewards regarding his reason for accepting with NEPTUNE EXPRESS (NZ) for this race. The horse was a dual acceptor and raced in the previous race. Stewards accepted Mr Simpson's explanation and ensured he has knowledge of the provisions of LR 38. (Race 5).

FROM DALBY (JUNE 15):

NATIVE (J Orman) was held up for clear running and unable to improve from the 400m until the early stages of the home straight. (*NATIVE, $5, finished second 1.80 lengths behind the winner). (Race 1).

Stewards questioned apprentice B. Newport and trainer M. Kropp regarding the disappointing performance of THINKHESAURUS. B. Newport advised that after beginning only fairly, THINKHESAURUS never travelled comfortably throughout the event and when placed under pressure failed to run on and proved disappointing. Mr Kropp advised that despite the gelding being somewhat fractious in the barriers, he still expressed disappointment with the performance as on the horse's trackwork and previous performances he expected a forward showing today. Mr Kropp advised that based on its performance today it was now his intention to barrier trial THINKHESAURUS prior to its next race start. A post- race veterinary examination revealed a superficial laceration below the horse's lip. Trainer Mr M. Kropp undertook to report to stewards any bearing on its performance today. (*THINKHESAURUS, the $1.45 favourite, finished last 9.50 lengths behind the winner and 6.80 lengths behind the second last runner). (Race 2).

On return to scale, apprentice E. Ljung reported that after beginning well she rode HANDFUL OF SILVER along to obtain a forward position, however despite her efforts to obtain a position closer to the rail she was obliged to race 3 wide throughout the event. (*HANDFUL OF SILVER, the $3.40 favourite, finished fourth 2.20 lengths behind the winner). (Race 5).

Near the 500m, GOLDEN TRINKETS (A. Fancourt) was forced to steady to avoid the heels of THE CONSPIRATOR (B. Stower), which shifted in when not completely clear. B. Stower, rider of THE CONSPIRATOR, was advised to exercise more care in similar circumstances. (*THE CONSPIRATOR, $3.30, won the race. GOLDEN TRINKETS, the $3 equal favourite, finished fourth 2.40 lengths behind the winner). (Race 6).

UPHELD PROTESTS:

FROM KILCOY (JUNE 14):

On return to scale a protest was lodged by B Powell, rider of second placegetter THIS TIME LORD against the winner JUDGE JUDY ridden by App S Alam alleging interference at the 400 metres. After taking evidence from the riders concerned, viewing the patrol DVD footage and taking into account winning margin, stewards upheld the protest and amended the placings. In arriving at this decision stewards found that from the 500 metres THIS TIME LORD had established a run to the inside of JUDGE JUDY and near the 400 metres was checked when JUDGE JUDY shifted back to the rail when not clear. As a result of this incident THIS TIME LORD lost momentum and was obliged to shift wider rounding the home-turn in order to obtain clear running. At a subsequent inquiry App S Alam was severely reprimanded and advised to show more care in similar circumstances. (Race 4).
