DOOMBEN MAY 9: DAVID FOWLER SELECTS ...

By David Fowler | Saturday, May 9, 2015

Form assessed for a soft 5, but upgrade likely.

RACE 1:

BALLET SUITE (2) flopped in the ATC Oaks but form before was promising. Well worth another chance as has trialled well since and nose roll added. BOHEMIAN LILY (1) won the GC Bracelet well and will race on pace. NO TRICKS (5) arrives with good NZ form and must be respected. Rough chances 3, 4, 6, 8, 10.

RACE 2:

UPHAM (7) was game in latest GC 2nd. Rolls forward again and hard to beat. Logical danger is the Waller-trained SADLERS LAKE who is going to the middle distance for the first time but has shown plenty of Sydney promise. JUMBO PRINCE (1) will be giving this pair a start which is a worry but he will stay all day. Rough chances 5 and 6.

RACE 3:

TRAVESTON GIRL (11) gets all the favours here from the good gate in contrast to her sound GC Guineas 3rd when she was trapped wide all the way. Either leads or box-seats in this. IVE GOT THE LOOKS (1) enjoyed a good run to win the GC Silks Stocking but gets that trip again today. There is 4.5kg between them, though. MIHIRI (8) has a chance. Rough chances 2, 5 and 12.

RACE 4:

LASER HAWK (1) was never a factor in the All Aged at Randwick after winning the Newcastle Newmarket. Surely this is lengths easier? Appreciates the drier track as well. NEO (2) is fit and in-form and beat several of these in the PM’s Cup at GC. EPIC (3) was warming up in that race and likes the Doomben mile. Rough chances 9, 10 and 13.

RACE 5:

Terrific race. PEPPERANO (9) is terrific value in my book. Blinkers on today after a soft 1st-up win at Sunshine Coast. Talented and gets the right run. LE CHEF (1) was the MM winner and was brilliant in a recent Sunshine Coast trial. Takes catching. SAMPEAH (3) will be the one winding up at the finish. Rough chances 2, 5, 8, 10, 13 and 15.

RACE 6:

CHARLIE BOY (5) ran well behind Our Boy Malachi in the Hallmark at Randwick and looks suited at 1350m with a good gate. Blinkers back on and maps well. GUNDY SPIRIT (10) is very good at this track and distance and will hit the line well. ALMAS FURY (2) will improve 2nd-up and is generously priced. Rough chances 1, 3, 4 and 6.

RACE 7:

I think the market has got it right. LEEBAZ (7) and PORNICHET (10) are young progressive stayers who both roll forward. Both are in form and I’ll give the nod to LEEBAZ. GYPSY DIAMOND (14) is a legitimate chance considering she beat LEEBAZ 2 runs ago. Rough chances 1, 2, 3, 8 and 13.

RACE 8:

Happy to back SACRED STAR (6) eachway. Raced well here last year and last 2 NZ wins were dynamic. Maps well, sitting off a solid tempo. SRIKANDI (15) is a winner (7 from 9) and I’m certain will look the winner somewhere in the straight. Happy to half risk OUR BOY MALACHI (8) at the odds available but he has won 17 from 19. Rough chances 3, 4, 5, 7, 9 and 11.

RACE 9:

MISS COVER GIRL (12) is a talented filly and should secure a good run here. Has a quick finish. STAVIVA (10) is a promising Victorian who trialled well at GC. Watch for him late. KURO (2) is better than his latest R’wick flop and likely to be ridden aggressively here. Rough chances 1, 6, 9 and 14.

BEST BET: TRAVESTON GIRL (Race 3).

BEST EACHWAY: SACRED STAR (Race 8).

BEST ROUGHIE: PEPPERANO (Race 5).

QUADRELLA: 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 10 / 1, 2, 3, 7, 8, 10, 14 / 3, 6, 8, 11, 15 / 1, 2, 6, 10, 12.
