MY CALL - SRIKANDI'S TRACK GALLOP WAS RIGHT ON THE MONEY. THE JURY IS STILL OUT ON LUMOSTY

By David Fowler | Monday, June 8, 2015

David Fowler is the principal thoroughbred caller for Radio TAB. David, who is a keen form student and punter, has enjoyed a lifetime involvement in the racing media. His personal blog, ‘My Call’, appears exclusively on HRO.

I'm not sure we can get square on Lumosty in a fortnight but she can't be judged conclusively on her Stradbroke performance.

Corey Brown has ridden better races but I was the first to acknowledge the gate was "half awkward" and "if she found cover, she would be hard to beat".

Well, cover never arrived. Quite the opposite, in fact, exposed four wide in a 1:18 tempo, she ended up four lengths from Srikandi at the line.

Inconclusive is the best term to use but the Tatts Tiara is going to be no pushover with Srikandi now back in form and Catkins likely to be fitter.

Maybe the rough and ready environment she encountered against the boys will be a learning curve for her.

I'll have to back up!

As a boy who used to clock the early morning gallops at Doomben almost 35 years ago, I'm aware of their importance.

It's almost the last untouched area by the punter although track times are posted in the press.

You would see winning gallops, horses improve and horses go backwards.

So I had to smile to myself when the Srikandi track gallop came to light, giving Excellantes a start and a beating on Tuesday morning ... and then he won the Hinkler on raceday.

As a kid I would have been all over her like a cheap suit.

Her dynamic Stradbroke performance underlined that sparkling gallop was right on the money.

I was glad to see State Premier Annastasia Palaszczuk at Stradbroke day.

One could have forgiven her for a "no show" after what went down earlier in the week.

By all reports she thoroughly enjoyed her day and would have been impressed with how well the BRC put the day on.

Hopefully, some heat has come out of last week's events and the Labor government can sit down and consult with a selection of stakeholders over the coming weeks.

In many ways, both parties need each other.

Many said the Stayers Cup at Randwick on Saturday was an "exciting spectacle".

I'd describe it as a disgusting spectacle.

How could those jockeys show so little judgment in allowing Paul King to stride 150 metres in front ... yes 150 metres in front ... yet he was only travelling at the average speed for a race of that type.

Those who had a bet apart from the winner Lovethebeaches were entitled to scream blue murder.

I'll put it to you this way. Imagine if that happened at the trots.

Ray Murrihy and his team should throw the book at some of them.

I don't know how far she will go but mark down maiden Opinionated as a filly who will more than her fair share of races.

A pity we will have to wait because I heard on the grapevine she is being sent for a spell.

Don't forget her.
