GOLD COAST, JANUARY 9: DAVID FOWLER SELECTS ...

By David Fowler | Friday, January 8, 2016

Form preview for the Magic Millions meeting at the Gold Coast. Form assessed for a track between Good 4 and Soft 5. As this assessment was made one day prior to raceday, please check final fields and track conditions for any changes on the day.

NOTE: Watch racing pattern of early races to see if there is an advantage to get wider on the track. Often happens here.

RACE 1:

CATCH A FIRE (13) is a promising maiden who has been unlucky several times in Melbourne/Vic. Needs some luck from the gate but trialled handily twice in Sydney and generously priced at $15 fixed. WOLF CRY (2) is 1st-up but has the best form (Sydney Autumn). I wouldn’t call his 2 Sydney trials brilliant but stack of money for him which should be kept in mind. HAVASAY (9) has also been well backed fixed and set for this. Rough chances 1, 3, 11, 12, 14 and 15.

RACE 2:

THREE SHEETS (15) profiles well for this. All 3 runs this time in are good and has the tactical speed to use the good alley to advantage. I wouldn’t describe the opposition as super-hot. WAR JET (2) has been set for this 1st-up. Races on-pace and has trialled well at Queanbeyan. REAL FAVULOUS (4) won easily at Warwick and well boxed. There are other winning possibilities. Rough chances 1, 8, 9, and 11.

RACE 3:

I’ve priced BUFFERING (1) at $1.25 to lead all the way en route to a likely victory. STEEL ZIP (2) went poorly last start but if you go on his previous late spring form he is a red hot go for the quinella. GUNDY SPIRIT (4) should have done a little better in the Goldmarket but is better than most of these. Rough chances 3, 6 and 8.

RACE 4:

ECHO GAL (6) appeals on both totes at $16. Forget latest R’wick run when didn’t handle going. First-up R’wick run was excellent and maps to get near fence first and wind up with a good run. Distance is right. PRIVATE SECRETARY (9) will be giving them a start but she has a strong motor at the end. MISS COVER GIRL (8) ran well here 2 weeks ago. Good on track and will appreciate a strong tempo. Rough chances 2, 3, 4, 10, 11, 16 and 17.

RACE 5:

TINTO (2) is a logical selection. Fantastic GC record (won 4 from 5) and unbeaten in 3 runs this trip. Usually draws the carpark but this time draws the fence. Hardest to beat is CENTRE PIVOT (1) who was dominant in the Bernborough 3 weeks ago and has won up to 2000m in Sydney. WORTHY CAUSE (4) is certain to run well but had to have him behind the other pair. Rough chances 3, 6, 8, 9 and 13.

RACE 6:

BALLIGARI (12) is terrific value at $17 fixed. Darted to the line well in the Goldmarket and usually puts in a strong performance 4th run back. Maps to secure a good run off a strong tempo. So too does MURT THE FLIRT (13) but thought BALLIGARI might be a touch stronger at the end off a tough 1400m. You can’t fault BACHMAN (5) who is looking for a hatrick. Rough chances 1, 3, 6, 8, 9, 11 and 15.

RACE 7:

Class carries you a long way and MAHUTA (1) has got plenty of it. Drawn the carpark but mightn’t be as ugly as it looks because FLIPPANT should take him across. If he hits the lead I doubt anything will run him down. He has been a real bulldog in his Melbourne Group wins. MOST IMPORTANT (3) ran a terrific race in the Vo Rogue and should perform well again. We advised the $18 was a good price earlier in the week. It has now trimmed to $13. EGYPTIAN SYMBOL (16) was unlucky in the Vo Rogue and maps well here. Rough chances 5, 8, 9 and 10.

RACE 8:

I’ve priced CAPITALIST (1) at $1.80 to win. The ease of his two wins so far has convinced me he is in a different league to his rivals. NICCOLANCE (6) can give the Snowden stable the quinella while NIKITAS (5) will be one of the few hitting the line hard. Rough chances 5, 6, 10, 11 and 14.

RACE 9:

Pace is hot here and strong finisher HUSSON EAGLE (9) should be suited by the style of race. KINGS TROOP (10) was a bit plain 1st-up but is fitter now and tracks the speedsters. WILD RAIN (5) is another suited by the landscape of the race but not sure about her at a strong 1100m. Rough chances 2, 7 and 8.

BEST BET: THREE SHEETS (Race 2).

BEST EACHWAY: HUSSON EAGLE (Race 9).

BEST ROUGHIES: CATCH A FIRE (Race 1), ECHO GAL (Race 4), BALLIGARI (Race 6)

QUADRELLA: 1, 3, 5, 6, 8, 9, 11, 12, 13 and 15 / 1, 3, 5, 8, 9, 10, 16 / 1 / 2, 5, 7, 8, 9, 10.
