MY CALL - LOOKING AT WAYS TO HONOUR BUFFERING

By David Fowler | Tuesday, March 29, 2016

David Fowler is the principal thoroughbred caller for Radio TAB. David, who is a keen form student and punter, has enjoyed a lifetime involvement in the racing media. His personal blog, ‘My Call’, appears exclusively on HRO.

There may well be a tug of love to immortalise Buffering once the retirement bell rings.

We hope that bell won't ring for some time and considering his dynamic Dubai win on the weekend, that may well be the case.

The Brisbane Racing Club has offered a great gesture and the "Buffering Bar" will be unveiled at the Eagle Farm reopening in May.

But the memory of Buffering will have to be perpetuated by something greater than that.

A statue is a sensible suggestion and a race named in his honour should also be strongly considered.

But the Victorians might have something to say about that.

Considering his domination of the Moir Stakes at Moonee Valley, this seems the logical race to attach the champions name to.

Fortunately, a solution is not marked urgent considering retirement seems light years away.

Light years might be stretching it but the Buffering story is unique in many ways.

At age eight, racing careers are either finished or winding down yet Buffering is spiralling to dizzier heights all the time. Read Dubai here.

He has been embraced Australia-wide as a racing treasure but could never be considered the best sprinter in the land at any one time.

Aussies love their sport and they love a trier and that's why Buffering is number one with so many.

I thought it might have been the "silly season" when I heard of the idea to make North Queensland a state in its own right.

Honestly, haven't people got more serious business to discuss?

Think of it from a racing point of view. A million dollar Cleveland Bay in Townsville? Cairns Amateurs funding to rival the Melbourne Spring Carnival ?

You've gotta laugh!

I made mention of the Racing Queensland/Ubet relationship last week.

Promotions to assist Ubet and create improved turnover are being encouraged and developed by RQ and that's a good thing.

Word on the street is that the controlling body is central to an idea to assist on track bookmakers which can also boost the Ubet coffers.

An unlikely alliance you might say but my mail is that the benefit to both parties could be significant.

Watch this space.

My colleague Paul Dolan broke one of his own tipping rules to select the card at the Sunshine Coast on Sunday.

Paul has long been against selecting horses at their next start after coming off a Maiden win.

He might reconsider that philosophy after Really Reilly made it back-to-back Maiden and Class One wins in the last race.

Congratulations to Paul, anyway. It's a bloody hard thing to do and shines brightly on the CV.
