WINNO'S WINNERS: GOLD COAST, MAY 7

By Darren Winningham | Friday, May 6, 2016

As this form assessment was made prior to raceday, please check final fields and track conditions for any changes on the day.

Rail is out 1m from the 1000m – 400m. I usually like horses trained at the track, or horses that have won or performed well there before.

David Vandyke has hit the ground running since relocating to Queensland ... with three winners and a photo-finish second from four runners. Blake Spriggs has been in great form - will it continue this week?

I must mention jockey Ryan Wiggins. I did rubbish his Roosters last week, but they have returned to the winners circle with their second win of the season so the pressure is back on Wiggo this week – can he match their form at the Gold Coast?

Race 1

Some nice trials from Siegfried (7) and Lucky Tom (4) both trained at the track may prove the telling tale here for this race. I like the runs of Kraftwerk (3) and Londehero (6) recently as well. A tough race to start off the day.

Selections: 6-7-3-4

Race 2

Walhaan (1) has a great record at the track with two wins from three starts. There are a few reserves in the race that could be make their presence felt if they make the field ... Explosive One (16) and Promas (18). Mr Lebock (6) is trained on the track by the Edmonds team and rarely runs a poor race at the Gold Coast. Canongate (11) and Col ‘N’ Lil (3) are the best of the rest.

Selections: 1-6-11-3. Rough chances 7, 16 and 18

Race 3 – Ken Russell Classic (Group 3)

A great two year old race leading us into the Winter Carnival.

Impending (4) from the John O’Shea (Godolphin stables) has been well backed to win again. John Zielke has two runners and has been in great form across the past few months with his two year old team. Royal Tithe (10) and Spot the Diff (9) represent him. Sundance (1) has won a recent barrier trial and has been impressive in its three career starts. Oink (2) is racing well and could now be looking for the 1200m of this race.

Selections: 4-1-9-10. Rough chances 2, 7 and 11

Race 4 - Gold Coast Bracelet (Listed Race)

Imposing Lass (6) has been in scintillating form winning two from two since resuming from a spell. Should be hard to toss here. Falkenberg (9) has some good form last preparation and could have a big say second up from a spell. Queen of Wands (1) was gallant in defeat two weeks ago at the Sunshine Coast and may not appreciate the smaller Gold Coast track. Rough chances to Self Esteem (4), Kebede (7) and Montignac (10).

Selections: 6-9-1-4. Rough chance 7 and 10

********************************************************************************************************

Race 5 – Silk Stocking (Listed Race)

A real tough race to start the quadrella.

I am tipping Zestful (13) from the Kris Lees stable at Newcastle to improve after its last unlucky 4th in the Provincial Championships at Randwick – should be some good odds as well! Eloping (4) runs well at the track and Beatniks (7) has been backed from $26 to $9 in this race. Where there is smoke there may be fire and the Steve O’Dea stable has been in good form lately. Tina Melina (5) was great last preparation. She can be tardy at the start but if she has her mind on the job she could be flashing home late. Adorabubble (8) has a good record at the track and could be value for your multiples.
`
Selections: 13-4-7-5. Rough chances 8 and 12

Race 6 – 2016 Prime Ministers Cup (Listed Race)

Looks like the two that fought out the Ascot at the Sunshine Coast two weeks ago could dominate again. I am hoping Worthy Cause (2) and Hopfgarten (1) will fight out the finish again. Jumbo Prince (7) was well backed last start at the Weetwood and has a great record at the track. It would not surprise me to see him win second up from a spell at around $10. I tipped Mahican (14) last week and was happy with its run. Back on the home track I am hoping it can find a place so I can jag the first four in a tough race.

Selections: 2-1-7-14. Rough chances 3 and 4

*******************************************************************************************************

Race 7 – 2016 Hollindale Stakes (Group 2)

Looks like the O’Shea (Godolphin) team have a great chance here to trifecta the race. I like Old North (14) to win. I am not sure that It’s Somewhat (7) and Hauraki (2) like rain affected tracks. If the track has a good rating box these three. Sir Moments (5) is an honest performer and loves the Gold Coast track. Excess Knowledge (3) from the astute Gai Waterhouse team could improve second up. This is sure to be a great race and should provide some important form leading into the feature races over the Brisbane Racing Winter Carnival.

Selections: 14-5-7-2. Rough chances 3 and 6

*******************************************************************************************************

Race 8 – 2016 Gold Coast Guineas

Hold on whilst I grab a bag and put numbers 1 through to 20 in it and see what comes out. It is one of those races where anything can win and anything could happen. I originally went for Divine Centuri (14) but it drew the Surfers Paradise beach in barrier 20. So I am struggling here. The Sydney pair of Takedown (1) and Brigadoon Rise (16) have good form and have drawn well. It is hard to line the form of Santa Anna Lane (4) up with the others here but it should be respected coming from the Lee and Anthony Freedman stables. Then some locals such as Perfect Dare (8) and Always Sacred (10) have run some wonderful races here. Sold for Song (13) has drawn wide as well and is probably looking for the 1200m second up from a spell.

Selections 16-1-13-10. Rough chances 4, 8 and 14

*******************************************************************************************************

With State of Origin upon us I am tipping NSW to dominate this weekend at the Gold Coast with at least five winners!

*********************************************************************************************************

Quaddie (races 5,6,7,8) 4, 5, 7, 13 / 1, 2, 7/ 2, 5, 7, 14 / 1, 4, 10, 13, 16 - cost $240 for $1

Treble (races 6,7,8) 1, 2, 7 / 2, 5, 7, 14 / 1, 4, 10, 13, 16 - cost will be $60 for $1

Small Quaddie (races 5,6,7,8) 7, 13 / 1, 2, 7 / 5, 14 / 1, 10, 13, 16 - cost $48 for $1

Jockeys Challenge this week
I am tipping a dead heat with Luke Dittman and Jason Collett … I wonder what odds I can get on this!
