COOLRING DOMINATES IN PRIME MINISTER'S CUP

By Graham Potter | Monday, May 9, 2016

PRIME MINISTER’S CUP – LISTED – 1400m

The Bjorn Baker trained Coolring was simply dominant in the Prime Ministers’s Cup.

The stable had notified stewards of their intention to lead pre-race ... in other words to make every post a winning one ... and that is exactly what the son of Sebring did and he did so in a most emphatic fashion.

In fact the rhythm Coolring settled into early suggested he had the race won a long way out. On turning for home the only danger to Coollring appeared to be Worthy Cause, who had enjoyed a smooth run, settling in third on the rail some two lengths adrift of the leader for most of the trip.

Shaken up by Luke Dittman, Worthy Cause took a moment to increase momentum but then he did begin to close on Coolring, that is until Jeff Lloyd gave Coolring a reminder of the task at hand.

The five year old responded on cue to ease away again and, with Worthy Cause’s run peaking well short of the line, it was left to Snippets Land and Jumbo Prince to come out of the pack and hit the line hard ... but Coolring was safely home by that time landing an impressive end to end victory.

Coolring obviously doesn’t mind travelling a mile or two. He was just touched off in the Weetwood on April 16. He was down in Hawkesbury on April 30 then back up to the Gold Coast for the Prime Minister’s Cup.

Now for Brisbane.

BJORN BAKER STABLE FOREMAN, JACK BRICE:

PRE-RACE:

“Coolring is racing very well this preparation. He has handled the trip well. The back-up is probably the only query, but he is doing everything right here and 1400m suits.

POST-RACE:

“Straight to the front. Relaxed beautifully ... and what a great training performance by Bjorn (Baker).

“You now, the backup ... and it’s the first time the horse has had a saddle on him in seven days.

“He’s fresh and he’s got the job done. Perfect!”

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:

As jockey B. Pengelly was overweight stewards permitted M. Cahill to be substituted as the rider of PILLAR OF CREATION. B. Pengelly was fined $200.00.

COOLRING – The stable advised their intention was to lead on the gelding today. The horse was ridden accordingly.

CHOICE BRO – Passing the 500m had to be steadied when placed in restricted room to the inside of HI SON.

HI SON – Held up rounding home turn.

PILLAR OF CREATION – Raced 3 wide without cover throughout.

DOUBLE IMPACT – Raced wide throughout.

LE VAL - Raced wide throughout.

AKAVOROUN - Raced wide throughout.

MAHICAN - Raced wide throughout. When questioned as to the tactics adopted jockey Wiggins stated that he was instructed to ride the gelding in a midfield position with cover, as it had previously performed best when ridden in this manner.

Jockey Wiggins added that from the awkward barrier he was concerned that he was going to be caught 3 wide early so elected to restrain to obtain cover, which resulted in him racing further back than anticipated.

Trainer T. Bailey confirmed the instructions and added that similar instructions had been issued at the gelding’s previous runs.
