MY CALL - PUNTERS ARE ENTITLED TO FEEL IRATE FOLLOWING A MADCAP DOOMBEN 10,000

By David Fowler | Tuesday, May 31, 2016

David Fowler is the principal thoroughbred caller for Radio TAB. David, who is a keen form student and punter, has enjoyed a lifetime involvement in the racing media. His personal blog, ‘My Call’, appears exclusively on HRO.

Punters seem as palpable to the Racing Queensland Stewards panel as they do the trio of riders involved in Saturday’s madcap Doomben 10,000.

Madcap is no overreach. Running the first 750m in 42.2 seconds (brutally fast) meant the three leaders had no hope of winning.

Naturally, they trailed the field home.

Stewards asked questions and that was the end of the penny section.

Chapter closed.

Of course the punters are entitled to feel irate at such a meek response from racing’s policemen.

It’s a double whammy after plundering their cash then gaining no satisfaction from the stewards.

Purton and Byrne seemed over zealous in the early stages of the race.

Surely every speed map had the roughie Two Blue leading at a genuine tempo. Maybe completing the first 750m in around 44 seconds, not 42.2 or almost 12 lengths faster.

I attribute little blame to King who was on a customary plan to lead and eventually did so.

Was it such a bad thing for Fell Swoop and Hooked to come out comfortably and take second and third positions?

Purton seemed hellbent on wanting to either lead or protect the trail behind the leader on Fell Swoop.

All this did was fire Fell Swoop up. A totally different horse to the one that raced on BTC Cup day.

And then Purton angles off the rail putting Hooked three wide so we can give Byrne some leeway here.

No one wants “trot and canter” affairs but this was at the other end of the scale.

What did we learn from Saturday?

Music Magnate and Azkadellia are genuine Stradbroke contenders despite the 10,000 being gifted to backmarkers.

Both have impressive win strike rates.

All-in betting is fraught with danger after Chris Waller concedes a Queensland Guineas option for Mackintosh rather than the publicised Derby plan. Hold off until later in the week.

Ghisoni should run in the Stradbroke but probably won’t. More’s the pity.

Real Love is the real deal. A wonderful betting investment even if she doesn’t win.

Fred Cowell and Chris O’Brien are good guys and I don’t even know them. Mighty Lucky, read Real Love above.

There’s still a jigsaw to be solved for the J.J.Atkins despite the lead-ups getting less and less by the minute.

I had the pleasure to walk the Eagle Farm track on Monday.

The camber is striking. I’m quite convinced sitting wide will not be a major disadvantage.

And I wouldn’t be frightened by wide alleys at the revamped 1000m start.

This is only speculation.

Let’s watch some racing before drawing some conclusions.
