BOUNDING TOPS DAY ONE OF THE MM BROODMARE SALE. THE DAUGHTER OF LONHRO SELLS FOR $1.9 MILLION

By Magic Millions | Thursday, June 2, 2016

Group One winning mare Bounding was the star act of a stunning opening day to the 2016 Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale at the Gold Coast yesterday.

The outstanding daughter of Lonhro, presented by Willow Park Stud, attracted intense interest and in the end it was the $1.9 million bid from John Moynihan, for America’s Stonestreet Farm, which came out on top.

Moynihan, who purchased subsequent Group One winner Miracles of Life from this sale two years ago, said he would talk to the Snowden stable, but it was likely the mare would be retired immediately to stud.

“When I was here a few years ago at the Teeley Dispersal I saw her mother and we really wanted to buy her as I thought she was beautiful,” Moynihan said.

“At the time I guess Bounding was still running and her mother got sick and was in the clinic – so we didn’t get her, but this one is a carbon copy of her. She’s gorgeous.”

“It’s an amazing family. She’s the kind of mare, if we’re lucky with her, she can provide a lot of very valuable yearlings to sell and she’s got the kind of pedigree that if she produces the right colts they can be stallions.”

Bounding was one of three mares on the day to sell for over $1 million – with Crystal Flute ($1.4 million) and Fontiton ($1.1 million) breaking the magical seven figure barrier.

Michael Wallace, bidding for the China Horse Club, was delighted to secure Crystal Flute for $1.4 million.

Presented by Teeley Assets, Crystal Flute is a recent Sydney winner from Monsoon Wedding and hails from the famous Redoute’s Choice family.

“World class pedigrees are hard to acquire,” Wallace pointed out. “She’s a young mare and we can start her breeding career how we like.”

“With a pedigree like this she’s a foundation mare that you have for the next 10 or 15 years and build families and foundations from.”

The other seven figure mare was former crack Melbourne juvenile Fontiton who sold for $1.1 million.

Presented by Sledmere Stud, as agent, Fontiton was knocked down to Henry Field for US based SF Bloodstock.

“She’s beautiful,” Field said. “She was exceptional.”

“She was one of those mares that had unbelievable ability and has a beautiful physique to back her up.”

“I’ve got no doubts she was a very special filly,” Field added.

Another quality race filly to sell well was Bring Me the Maid – offered by Bhima Thoroughbreds on behalf of Wylie Dalziel and Roy Higgins Racing. She was sold to Dean Hawthorne Bloodstock for $900,000.

“She was a great racemare,” Hawthorne said. “She ran third in a Golden Slipper and she’d won a lot of prizemoney.”

“She was a consistent performer from an early two-year-old to her three-year-old career. She’s got a race record behind her and she’s a big physical type of mare.”

“Also the fact that the Danehill factor was further back, which gives us options.”

“We’d been battling away all day – it’s very hard to get these good mares,” Hawthorne added.

Other big sellers on Day One included last start Group One winner Precious Gem ($825,000 to China Horse Club), Magic Millions Classic winner Real Surreal ($800,000 to Bruce Perry Bloodstock) and Australasian Oaks winner May’s Dream ($720,000 to Willcox Bloodstock).

During the day over $28 million was traded on 172 lots sold at an average price of $163,645 and clearance rate of 81 per cent. The average and gross rose 29% and 24% respectively on last year’s opening day’s sale.

Magic Millions Managing Director Vin Cox was delighted with the results on Day One with three lots selling for over $1 million and 14 lots fetching prices of at least half a million dollars.

“It’s just been spectacular,” Cox noted. “From so many levels it was a pleasure to be a part of.”

“The numbers are way, way up as you’d expect with so many high priced horses.”

“The average itself is up $36,000 and the gross is up $5.5 million on last year.”

“We couldn’t be happier. It was such a good result on so many levels. Good horses in the catalogue sold very well.”

“There was a lot of international money and people still with their powder dry with a couple more days to come.”

“We have some great broodmare prospects still to come and there will be some great opportunities across all levels of the market,” Cox added.
