WINNO'S WINNERS: EAGLE FARM AUGUST 6

By Darren Winningham | Thursday, August 4, 2016

Well the 2016/17 season has started. Congratulations to all the winners last season across the State.

The Coffs Harbour Carnival was washed out by some unfortunate weather this week. Hopefully the weather will be kinder to the Eagle Farm meeting on Saturday where the rail is out 2.5m for the entire circuit.

Looks like the track may be affected by the rain earlier in the week, but with the new drainage system I think the track should race pretty evenly for the meeting.

NB *As this form assessment was made prior to raceday, please check final fields and track conditions for any changes on the day.

Race 1

Looks like Royal Tithe (1) will continue on with her recent winning form. The John Zielke/Josh Oliver combination has been in great form in recent weeks. Game of Dreams (2) was impressive at Grafton over the Carnival when leading and only being run down late. He is stepping up to the 1500metres for the first time. He does like wet tracks. Persistent Shadow (4) finished second to Royal Tithe last start. Nathan Day who fared well last season after making a comeback takes the ride this week. Captain’s Pick (5), from the Ben Currie stables in Toowoomba, won impressively over 1300m last start at his home track and may be one to follow. Beloso (3) has met with some good support in early markets firming from $9 to $6.50.

Selections: 1-3-2-4 rough chance 5.

Race 2

This is an average race. If you feel the need to have a bet Annaman (7) may be better suited on a slow to good track. Harada Bay (3) was drawn wide last start but was beaten conclusively by Akavoroun (1) who he meets here again in this race. Akavoroun (1) finally saluted after a lengthy period of not winning last start and he may just go on with that winning form again this week!

Selections: 7-3-1-6.

Race 3

This is the inaugural “Tim Bell Memorial” race – such an appropriate tribute to a wonderful young man and jockey taken from the racing industry too soon. I hope I can find the winner here in his honour. Hidden Pearl (2) is first up and has drawn nicely. Will probably scoot along in front and take some running down. I am going to tip Pienka (10) from the Tony Gollan stable who has won a recent trial. The horse has drawn badly in barrier 12 but the new Eagle Farm start should still allow Jim Byrne to find a nice spot and challenge in the last 100 metres. Another interesting runner is Escebee (9) from the Brett Cavanough stable who is a real speedster and has a good record racing fresh – maybe one to be wary of in this race. Then there is Bearskin (12) that Tim Bell rode to his only two victories. Wouldn’t it be grand if this horse could win this race as well! Tegan Harrison rides him first up from a spell in this race. This is a very good race and some good value to be found here.

Selections: 10-2-9-12.

Race 4

Morendi (3) gets back and races home late. His run in the Grafton Guineas was full of merit and then he returned to the winners circle last start at the Gold Coast. He looks like a stayer that is on the improve and could be hard to beat here. Super Force (7) was gallant last week running second to Rednav over the same distance at Doomben. Charcuterie (5) from the Kelso Wood stables has been racing consistently and I think is looking for this 2200 metres. It will be interesting to see if he can step up to this distance. Panno Rossa (1) has been racing well and with a wet track forecast it should be right in the mix. The horse improves out of set on rain affected going and should not be left out of your multiples and exotics.

Selections: 3-7-5-1.

Race 5

Cruising Speed (11) is looking for a hat trick of wins here and has won over the course and distance. She won two weeks ago, Jimmy Orman retains the ride and looks like she has some ability. Solar Burst (15), trained by Tony Sears after being transferred from Melbourne (previously trained by Matthew Ellerton & Simon Zahra), is an interesting runner and Sears has been instrumental over recent months in producing horses new to his stable and winning races. Could be one to watch here and has drawn well for her first run in Brisbane. The Umbrella Man (14) had no luck last start, got too far back and is drawn better this week. Look for an improved performance after disappointing last start as favourite. Western Belle (16) from the Toby Edmonds yards on the Gold Coast looks a nice chance for your exotics. It is a tough race to start the Quadrella!

Selections: 11-15-14-16 rough chances 3 and 5.

Race 6

The race is named “The National Jockeys Celebration Day” race. A race to acknowledge the dangerous job that jockeys and stable riders engage in every day to provide us with this wonderful spectacle of horse racing. Much respect to these wonderful athletes that put their bodies on the line each week for our enjoyment, whether for betting or just the thrill of owning and watching the sport of horse racing. Into the Red (1) ran an amazing race in the Ramornie Handicap at Grafton and is sure to make his presence felt here. I am sure stable representative Patricia Gesler would love to see this grand old war horse get another win here. Be sure to be on the lookout for Patricia at the races who always makes a special effort to dress up and represent the stable in fine style. Dream Choice (4), trained by Robert Heathcote was a good winner last start and will probably be the hardest to beat here. Grande Punto (6) from the Allan Denham stables in Sydney makes the journey north after a solid win at Rosehill last start. I like a roughie here as well that may sneak a place – Budget Bender (11) has been trialling well at the Gold Coast and gets into the race with really no weight with apprentice Chris Dell wasting to get down to 51 kilograms to ride the gelding. He normally runs well fresh but has a better record second up – maybe one to keep an eye on over the coming weeks.

Selections: 1-4-2-6 rough chance 11.

***************************************************************************************************

Race 7

Craiglea Deken (5) was impressive winning in Townsville over the Carnival at 1600m. Brad Pengelly retains the ride and the time in the race seemed to be good enough to suggest it will be hard to beat again. San Telmo (16) trained by Brad Smith and to be ridden by Michael “Muppy” Hellyer has a great second up record and will be a good price here. I think the 1600m second up could see the gelding improve and race well. La Spiaggia (11) has a gear change (addition of ear muffs) which he has raced well with previously. Colour Change (4) is a chance and has been racing consistently in recent starts. Cushy Number (15) is a roughie here – if he can get the 1600m.

Selections: 5-16-11-4 rough chance 15.

Race 8

Wow, a No Metro Win race to finish off the day. I would say to take the field in your Quaddies here – I keep on getting busted each week with the last leg! The key to the race is if Oberland (19) gets into the field as it is the third emergency. It has been racing in higher grade races recently and has drawn well here and will be hard to beat if it gets a run. Sky Limit (5) won recently at the Gold Coast and probably will be ridden back from barrier 15. Miri Miri (6) won well last start at the Sunshine Coast as is another that has fared poorly in the barrier draw getting barrier 11. It has been racing very consistently and may do well if it gets any luck from the draw. Queen Tara (7) won well first up for the Toby Edmonds stable last start at the Gold Coast and may go on with that form after being transferred to the stable from Peter Robl in Sydney. The two roughies of the race are Red Bowers (2) and Carton (9) both from the Matthew Dunn stables. Red Bowers was not suited by the 1000m of the Kirby last start at Grafton whilst Carton has drawn appallingly here in barrier 20 but has an excellent record second up. Make sure you have these two in if they get a start.

Selections: 19-6-7-5 rough chances 2 and 9.
