'KILCOY KASH' - WITH DARREN WINNINGHAM

By Darren Winningham | Friday, August 19, 2016

Well, I have packed my cameras and computer and set the GPS this weekend to head to the track that is dubbed the “Moonee Valley of the North” – the Kilcoy Race Club. This weekend is one of their handfuls of TAB meetings that are conducted across the year. It is called “Kilcoy Veteran Race Day” where the Club pays its respects to our returned service men and women – a great initiative! With the first race scheduled for 11.40am and FREE admission it is bound to be a great day out for punters and families. The schedule is for six (6) gallop races, three (3) grass trot races and three (3) mini trot grass races. It is a grand day to attend. Horses who have won at the track or are ridden handy have a distinct advantage at this track.

Race 1

Pezenas (4) won well here two months ago. It will be ridden close to the lead and probably will be hardest to hold out. Darling Be Good (2) has won here before and should be on the pace as well – it is to be ridden by apprentice Jed Hodge who rides Kilcoy well. Go Get Some is a lightly raced six year old that may be on the improve and has been racing well of late.

Selections: 4-2-3-6 rough chance the 1.

Race 2

From St Andrews (7) is a nice type that has been racing in some higher class races. It is trained by Neville Petersen in Toowoomba and should be hard to toss here. Halpin (2) and Kakadu Plum (3) have not fared well with the barrier draw but will test this field. As it is Veterans Day I suppose the topical tip is Kakadu Plum! The Julie Green trained Shadow Queen (12) is a lightly raced three year old filly who has been racing consistently and could improve sharply in this field.

Selections: 7-2-3-12 rough chance 10.

Race 3 – Butler McDermott Lawyers Diggers Cup

Clangoranda (6) trained by Greg Cornish at Beaudesert loves this track and is sure to be ridden handy in this race. Italian Queen (2) is another that is drawn well and will probably lead the field here in this race. The horse has a win and a second from her two starts here at Kilcoy. The rest look an even bunch – put whatever you like in for your exotics!

Selections: 6-2-5-3

Race 4 – Carlton Mid Vietnam Veterans Cup

On face value Burleigh Bullet (1) looks the hardest to beat here. Last start she didn’t lead at the Gold Coast and it seemed to be unlucky in the running – this could be easier. The horse has two wins for two starts here at the track. Bam’s Princess (7) is a lightly raced mare and I have seen it win here at Kilcoy in good fashion back in May. Beaufort Gyre (5) is another who likes the track and should race just off the pace and come home late.

Selections: 1-7-5-8

Race 5

This is a tough race here. I am going for a roughie I think – Savage Hood (4) from the Mark Webb stables. I think the horse is coming back in grade here and could be one to beat. Amber Lights (8) is racing consistently and has been well supported at each of its last two starts at Ipswich without a result – maybe a change of fortune may occur at Kilcoy! Mr Seduction (7) doesn’t win too often with only 1 win from 36 starts and may fill a place.
`
Selections: 4-8-7-9

Race 6

I must declare an interest here – I saw Wisconsin (4) win a good race at the Grafton Carnival in July 2015 – it was trained by Bryan Guy and owned by John Moore at the time and rated well by Tommy Berry to win on that occasion. It obviously has been sold and has a new trainer (Shane and Adam Barling) and new owners but if it could repeat that form here it would be a special! Artistic Choice (6) has been racing consistently and looks like the 1500m here will be no problem. Sneaky Peterson (10) has been racing well in Toowoomba and looks a chance in a tough race to finish off the day!

Selections: 4-6-10-8

**************************************************************************************************

Quaddie (races 3 to 6) 2,6 / 1,5,7 / 4,7,8 / 4,6,10 - cost $54 for $1

Treble (races 3 to 6) 1,5,7 / 4,7,8 / 4,6,10 - cost $27 for $1

Small Quaddie (races 3 to 6) 2,6 / 1,7 / 4,8 / 4,6 - cost $16 for $1

Madness Quaddie 6 / 1 / 4,8/ 4,6 - cost $4 for $1

Jockey Challenge Most of the jockeys have not been declared at the time of doing my tips – so you can review and add the selections and jockeys up when the jockeys are declared. But I do have Gary Geran and Jed Hodge riding a double at this stage – maybe take a closer look at any rides they pick up!
