WINNO’S CAULFIELD CASH - OCTOBER 8

By Darren Winningham | Friday, October 7, 2016

Well it seems that regular readers based in Melbourne have been upset with no tips and reviews of their meetings in recent weeks – they have said as I am a true Blue NSW man that I have neglected the universe of racing in Victoria. So with the spotlight off Sydney and it moving to Melbourne I will chuck my Horse Racing Only cap on and see what we can do in Melbourne over the coming month!

Just for the record it seems very weak of you Melbourne people to have a chop at me – maybe you should have a crack at your local trainers and owners who have made the Ladbrokes Caulfield Stakes a joke with only two acceptances to take on the mighty NSW mare WINX! I am sure it will still be a spectacle … but really!

NB *As this form assessment was made prior to race-day, please check final fields and track conditions for any changes on the day.

Race 1

Double Jeopardy (1) ran a nice race last week at Flemington. The others are unraced and the late betting may determine any of these youngsters with ability. I do have a good tip for the Tony McEvoy trained Miss Wahoo (10) who they have an opinion of. Kerrin McEvoy takes the ride for the first start. Tony McEvoy has All Eez (2) engaged as well and there is also a good wrap on this colt. Wait for No One (9) has won both of his trials on heavy ground – may be a mud lark if the track is rain affected.

Selections: 1-10-2-9.

Race 2

Assign (4) looks to be working into some good form with some solid runs of late. Howard Be They Name (2), who had a brief winter campaign in Brisbane, looks the hardest to beat here – he is third up this week and I reckon he is ready to unleash a big run. The other Darren Weir runner down in the weights is Master Zephyr (7). He may well just relish the lighter weight here and race handy and sprint away in the concluding stages.

Selections: 4-2-7-5.

***************************************************************************************************

Race 3

Here is another one coming out of the Brisbane Winter Carnival – My Country (3) trained by the Snowden team. I really think she was stiff at Moonee Valley the other week and back to a big track and a long straight I think you will see the best of her this week. In The Vanguard (10) has been trialling well in Sydney and has been sent south in quest of spring glory. She did run some super races last preparation and looks forward for this assignment. The other Sydney horse is Prompt Response (6). As with My Country (3), I thought that Moonee Valley brought her unstuck last time as well. Overall a good even race here – but I do like the chances of my top three to run the trifecta.

Selections: 3-10-6-14.

**************************************************************************************************

Race 4

Chetwood (3) from the Godolphin team has been in awesome form winning his last three races in a row – I cannot see any reason to tip against him here. Badawiya (5) and Well Sprung (9) both come off respectable runs in the recent Rupert Clark Stakes and both should go well again. A big watch on the kiwi invader Mabeel (6) who has an impressive record in New Zealand and is first up here this week – maybe we will see the best of him as he gets over longer distances but take note he has won two from two first up!

Selections: 3-5-9-6.

**************************************************************************************************

Race 5

Secret Agenda (2) was impressive over the 1200metres here last start with a great win – Damien Oliver retained the ride and at $4.40 I think she represents a good gamble here. Sheidel (4) led last start and was overpowered late to go down over 1100metres here. I think if she can be ridden a little bit quietly by James McDonald this week she will be in the finish somewhere. Ravi (10) from the Peter and Paul Snowden yards in Sydney was unlucky last start at Rosehill and second up should strip fitter. She has a great second up record with three starts for two wins and a placing so she may be worthy of an each way bet here.

Selections: 2-10-4-8 rough chances 1 and 3.

**************************************************************************************************

Race 6 – Ladbrokes Caulfield Stakes

Easy race here … just stand out Winx (3) from the improved Black Heart Bart (1) and He or She (2).

Selections: 3-1-2.

***************************************************************************************************

Race 7 – Schweppes Thousand Guineas

I have a theory with these big races at Caulfield – that if you have won here before or run well you normally can perform well in the big stage – let’s see if it works this week! Whilst Foxplay (4) hasn’t won here I think she looked great winning the Tea Rose at Randwick the other week and will be hard to hold out here. I like the local Missrock (2) to be the one that could provide an upset here at the juicy odds of $14. The Waterhouse/Bott trained Global Glamour (3) is backing up from winning the Flight Stakes last weekend in Sydney over the mile and must have trained on well, else Gai would not be backing her up here.

If you are looking for some value for your exotic bets may I suggest Sebring Dream (11) who was seriously unlucky over 1400metres at Caulfield two weeks ago. Then there is Harlow Gold (12) trained by the Hayes/Dabernig team and syndicated by Wylie Dalziel for a massive number of owners – what a sight that would be to see them all on the presentation podium after the race. Regan Bayliss retains the ride and will be looking for a Group winner. Would take the opportunity to wish all owners, trainers and jockeys all the best in this race!

Selections: 4-2-3-5 rough chances 11 and 12.

Race 8 – Caulfield Guineas

It seems like a broken record – but here we are again – a Queensland Winter Racing horse successful in Brisbane over the Carnival. Sacred Elixir (1) was just super first up from a spell destroying a quality field at Caulfield two weeks ago. We all know that Tony Pike has a huge opinion of this gelding. I hope that he gets luck in running and we see the best of him again this weekend. Impending (2) from the Godolphin team was just as impressive winning the Stan Fox at Rosehill – the colt has his first look at Caulfield but should perform if he stays on the right leg coming around the turn. Saracino (6) is another New Zealand raider looking to steal our Aussie prize money. I think now he is third up and he has been set for this race for months he should quinella the race with his New Zealand counterpart.

Selections: 1-6-2-4 rough chance 7.

***************************************************************************************************

Race 9 – Toorak Handicap

Bon Aurum (3) trained by Ciaron Maher looks the one to beat – he gets in well here and at $5 looks a great price. He’s Our Rokkii (4) has an impeccable record at the Caulfield track with three starts for two wins and one second. Dwayne Dunn has ridden the gelding for six starts for five wins as well – a lot going for him here – I am nearly talking myself into tipping him! Counterattack (7) has a great third up record and gets in well at the weights. The Japan horse that has been transferred to Darren Weir, Tosen Stardom (2), may be ready to produce something here this weekend – keep your eye on him in weeks to come.

Selections: 3-4-7-2.

****************************************************************************************************

Race 10

I am going for an upset here! Ocean Embers (11) has been in great form and has a great record at the Caulfield track. I am sure that the Sydney trained Star Turn (12) will be hardest to beat here – but at $10 Ocean Embers looks terrific value to me. Hucklebuck (4) has a great second up strike rate and was only beaten 0.5 lengths first up with the massive weight of 61kilograms – he has drawn barrier 1 and could be difficult to hold out late. Again a horse to watch is the five year old gelding Fell Swoop (5) who has a good record first up and at the Caulfield track. This is a hard race to finish a massive ten race program – it may just come down to luck and who finds the best part of the track so late in the day. If you are looking for a real roughie watch out for the old war horse Flamberge (1) who has never been unplaced first up and does run well here.

Selections: 11-12-4-5 rough chance 1.

*************************************************************************************************

Early Quaddie (races 3 to 6 NSW) 3,10 / 3,5 / 2,4,10 / 3 - cost $12 for 41

Quaddie (races 7 to 10) 2,3,4,5 / 1,2,6 / 3,4,7 / 4,11,12 - cost $108 for $1

Value Quaddie (races 7 to 10) 2,4 / 1,6 / 3,4 / 11,12 - cost $16 for $1

Mad Quaddie (races 7 to 10) 4 / 1,6 / 4 / 11,12 - cost $4 for $1

Treble (races 8 to 10) 1,6 / 3,4,7 / 4,5,11,12 - cost $24 for $1

Jockeys Challenge

Looks like a tough day despite ten races – I do not have any one jockey dominating the program. May I suggest a little something on Kerrin McEvoy and Damian Lane, let’s hope they are reasonable prices.
