WINNO'S WINNERS: EAGLE FARM, OCTOBER 22

By Darren Winningham | Thursday, October 20, 2016

This week we are back at Eagle Farm – the track is rated as “Good” and the rail is out 3m for the entire course. The track seems to be racing more evenly over the past few meetings, however, the philosophy that if you have performed well on the new track seems to be holding true.

This week has seen a new Melbourne Cup contender emerge on Wednesday at Geelong when the Godolphin galloper Qewy led all the way to win the Geelong Cup. It looked an impressive performance to me.

The focus of racing this weekend is at Moonee Valley with the much anticipated showdown of Winx and Hartnell in the Cox Plate of 2016. I think that despite the knockers the super mare Winx will continue on her winning way and will dominate the field. This will be a race for the history books mark my words.

NB *As this form assessment was made prior to race-day, please check final fields and track conditions for any changes on the day.

**On a personal note I would like to thank all the followers of Winno’s Winners for their support and kind words over the past week. I lost my good friend and buddy “Ike” last Friday afternoon. He was a dog – a beagle – and was a much loved family member who had a special place in my heart as people who know me would understand. This week I dedicate my tips to his memory – RIP, Ike Culorgair.

Race 1

Hold the phone! This is not a two year old race to open the program this week! I think the consistent Denoninator (4) will appreciate being back at Eagle Farm and getting back to the 2212m of this race. La Spiaggia (3) turned in a great performance two weeks ago at Doomben and should be the toughest to beat here. The Chris Munce trained Perplexity (1) is third up here. Look for an improved performance.

Selections: 4-3-1-2

Race 2

Royal Myth (2) from the John Zielke yards was desperately unlucky in her first race start – held up at a vital stage. I think she is the one here. The two runners from the Gillian Heinrich and Ben Rodgers stable have been trialling well and my Gold Coast spies say that they look above average – they are Zinzi (12) and the fourth emergency Run All Night (16). Both have not fared well in the barrier draw and will need some luck. I am giving a hope to the Steven O’Dea trained Setoka (9) as it has drawn barrier one and I like to always have something on the horses that draw nicely in such an open field with not much exposed form. Epiction (6) is trained by Chris Munce and Ryan Wiggins takes the ride – these two have a lethal combination when they pair up and Munce is having a good run at the moment with his stable flying! An open race – may be one to keep your money firmly in your pocket and just watch on.

Selections: 2-9-6-12 rough chance 16

Race 3

This is an even field with some nice types resuming. Wicked Intent (3) and Sundance (9) fit this criterion. There has been some solid support early for Prompt Return (6), being backed from $4.20 to $3.30 in the early markets. I am going to tip the two Toby Edmonds horses to quinella the race – Prompt Return and Sundance. Hard Stride (1) has been racing very consistently and probably deserves a change of luck here this week.

Selections: 9-6-3-1

Race 4

Sea Red (3) was heavily supported last start at Doomben and flashed home from last to win the race – the bigger track may just suit the mare. Bodega Negra (4) returns from a run at Randwick where he was beaten comprehensively, however he does have a reasonable record here at Eagle Farm. Brazen Moss (8) comes off a nice win last start at Doomben and interestingly ran a faster time that Sea Red did on that occasion. The other Tony Gollan trained runner Lord Coconuts (11) ran second to Brazen Moss in the same race and I thought was a touch unlucky in the run. He may be some nice odds here for your multiple and exotic bets.

Selections: 8-11-3-4

Race 5

An open Class 3 race to kick off the Quaddie this week! Better Land (2) has had a stable change, now being trained on the Gold Coast by Toby Edmonds after being trained by Darren Weir in Melbourne. It resumes this week with blinkers off after winning a trial at the Gold Coast recently. It looks forward enough to test these. I like the form of Powerful Saga (5) and Comic Story (6) over recent weeks and I think with their history of reasonable runs at the track they can have a big say here. Cool Sequence (7) is another that has come back from a spell and has been working through the grades nicely. Gets his chance to perform at a Saturday meeting – his win last start at Sunshine Coast was full of merit. Nilette (10) has a jockey change this week with Damian Browne swapping from Powerful Saga to ride the mare. She was not far away last start and may be better suited here at Eagle Farm.

Selections: 6-5-2-7 rough chance 10

Race 6

Super Suave (2) was nominated in race 5 as well but has been scratched to run here. He has won both career starts and looks a nice type and has drawn well. Bithard (5) turned in a terrible performance last start at Doomben after a slashing run behind Nicconi Leggera here at Eagle Farm the run before. The blinkers come off this start and winkers go back on and I think that this should improve the gelding. I was at the Gold Coast track in August when Smart Devil (8) came down the outside and destroyed that field – I know it was only a Maiden but the run had to be seen to be believed. He then stepped up the week after at Eagle Farm and ran a nice race in his first Saturday start coming from well back to be beaten by 1.5 lengths. Whilst I cannot find any official barrier trial form here I am certain that the astute Bevan Laming will have the gelding ready to fire here first up – he should be a nice price as well. This is a very tough race and should be a good betting race with many chances!

Selections: 8-2-5-7 rough chance 1

Race 7

I am staying with the Robert Heathcote trained Bidii Babe (10) this week. She ran a nice race behind Most Important the other week and the time they ran in that race was amazing clocking 1:08:27 for the 1200m at Doomben. Prior to that start she had won nicely first up here on the track over 1200m. Larry Cassidy stays on here – so Rob must have not been upset with the ride last start. I am staying solid – this is my best for the day! I know that Hanwritten (2) is a progressive type and has strung two wins together. He will be the toughest to beat this week – the Dunn/Lloyd combination has a good strike rate when they pair up. I went looking for some value for the placings – Three Beers Please (9) and Stella Ombra (11) have been racing consistently and deserve a change of luck.

Selections: 10-2-11-9

**************************************************************************************************

Race 8

Pera Pera (1) was impressive in his first run in Queensland – Jimmy Orman takes the ride this week and I am hoping that the gelding will take a liking to the Eagle Farm track. Privlaka (3) from the Heathcote stables will be hard to beat again – his stable has been in great form in recent weeks and with any luck could take out the last two races on the program. I like one here at $51 to fill the placings. I Do Care (16) ran a nice race here two starts ago coming home late to be beaten 2.8 lengths behind Mr Jetset who came out last week and was narrowly defeated. The others I like for a place have drawn wide and that is why I think I Do Care may be one to put in your trifectas and first four bets. Legendary Luke (12) has drawn barrier 18 and L’Entrecote (2) has got barrier 17 – these two probably would be genuine contenders in the race if they had not been drawn so badly.

Selections: 1-3-16-12-2

Jockey Challenge

This week it looks like a battle between Jeff Lloyd, Jim Byrne and Jimmy Orman. I am tipping the Queenslander! Yes you heard it right – the Queenslander Jim Byrne to take the jockey’s challenge this week!

Good luck and good punting!
