WINNO'S SIXTY SECONDS WITH ... TYE ANGLAND

By Darren Winningham | Friday, January 6, 2017

Winno talking to Tye Angland ... part of the 'brotherhood in blue' club. Angland will represent Winno's beloved New South Wales in the final leg of the Origin Jockey's Series at the Gold Coast tomorrow and the two got together to produce the latest offering of 'Winno's sixty seconds with ...' only on HRO

Do you have a nickname?

I have a few – but I am known as “Rooster.” I got this when I first met my wife – she was the trainer’s daughter and each morning when she arrived at track work I would stand at the fence and crow!

You were sporting a right black eye at the races on New Year’s Eve. I assume that Damian Browne has had a cheap shot in preparation for the final week of the Origin Series next week?

Actually, no he didn’t. It was my four year old daughter who threw a phone at me. She got me good. I have taught her to throw and I am regretting it now.

How long have you been riding?

Ten years – I think.

When you were an apprentice, who is your master?

Gary Fraser at Hawkesbury, NSW

Your fondest memory of working for Gary?

Meeting Erin – my wife – the trainer’s daughter!

Best thing you like about your work?

It is different – there is a lot of travelling. It is not an everyday job that people are involved in. The enjoyment of winning races and seeing connections faces after a winning ride.

What do you do when you cannot sleep?.

Toss and turn – I don’t get much sleep having two children.

Jockeys start early in the morning. What time do you get up to start work?

I am not tied in with any trainers so I do not ride a lot of track work – but when I am requested I am up around 4am.

How do you prefer to be woken up in the morning?

I cannot answer that ... ok, with an alarm on the IPhone

Most memorable day in the saddle?

Winning my first Group 1 – the Stradbroke riding Black Piranha in 2009. Then riding four winners at Sha Tin, Hong Kong. That was a big moment as well.

A memorable horse you have ridden?

Press Statement – trained by Chris Waller. I had a bit to do with him in the early days then I was able to come up to Brisbane and win the Group 1 J.J.Atkins on him in 2015. He was a nice colt with a stack of ability to win more races.

What was the turning point in your career?

Getting a phone call from Steve Railton to go to Hong Kong to ride. It boosted my career. I was able to get a contract and go over there and ride. I rode in Hong Kong for four years.

What are you always late for?

Not much actually.

If you could change careers tomorrow what would you do?

I grew up around the rodeo circuit. My family is still crazy about it. I probably would be involved in it.

What is your favourite music?

Whatever is playing, I am not tied down to any particular music.

What is the most embarrassing song on your phone?

Lexi’s (my daughter) play list – I have got them all – Barbi songs.

What is your favourite gadget?

My IPhone (laughing)

What would you chose as your last meal?

A good steak – or a chicken schnitzel with chips

Name one person who you want to have dinner with?
Ty Murray – I grew up watching him and he is a world champion rodeo cowboy – I am a big fan!

Name one thing you could not live without?

My two children – Lexi, aged 5 and Addison, aged 1 and half years old.

What is your greatest fear?

I don’t think I have a fear, I am pretty tough.

NRL/AFL favourite team?

NRL – I follow the Broncos. (I think we will have to edit this answer was Winno’s response)

State of Origin time – NSW or QLD?

NSW Blues – at one stage I did turn and was a silly little boy and followed the Queensland Moroons, when Wendell Sailor and Darren Lockyer were involved.

Who do you talk on the phone the most to?

My wife Erin, or my best mate Robbo.

What are you grateful for everyday?

Everything I have in life.

What do you like to put on a sandwich?

Lexi is crazy about Nutella, but I am not. I like peanut butter sandwiches for me.

What toppings do you like on your pizza?

BBQ Chicken or Meatlovers.

How do you define success?

Try your best – you can only do your best and if the wins come it is a bonus.

Who is you man crush?

Channing Tatum – the guy from the Magic Mike film.

Tell us something that may surprise us about you?

I am really tall for a jockey

If you are down to your last $10 what would you spend it on?

Give it to the kids – let them go and do whatever they like with it. They would enjoy it more than I would!

State of Origin at the Gold Coast ... it looks like it is between NSW and New Zealand. The Queenslanders are gone! What should we expect?

Brownie is out of it now (with a suspension) which could be good for us. The old bloke pulled out a few tricks last year to just pip us.

It is a good series and plenty of enjoyment and we give each other a dig in the jockeys’ room. It is a great series and I love being a part of it!

... But we will be ready..
