WINNO'S WINNERS: GOLD COAST, JANUARY 14

By Darren Winningham | Friday, January 13, 2017

Well it has arrived – The Jeep Magic Millions Day on the Gold Coast for 2017 – a day where history is made, the frocks and fascinators are out and about and the day... well it is normally stinking hot!

The track is rated as good and the rail is out 1m from the 1000m to the 400m and then in the true position for the rest of the course.

I think this week the fastest way home may be along the rail and horses that race handy may have a distinct advantage.

This week we are straight into the form.

NB: As this form assessment was made prior to race-day, please check final fields and track conditions for any changes on the day.

Race 1

Well we start off the program with the Magic Millions Maiden Plate over 1200m with $150,000 first prize! This is sure to be a competitive race. I probably would have tipped Dortmund (3) but the colt has drawn barrier 16 – he will need some luck from out there. Mount Panorama (9) trained by Gary Moore comes off a solid run at Wyong last start and sharply drops back in grade here this weekend. Moore had a winning double last weekend at the Gold Coast and his stable is firing at the moment – drawn well here in barrier 5 – the three year old gelding could be hard to beat!

Paris for Me (14) looks a good each way chance as well and will probably lead them drawn in barrier 2. Two other chances that are drawn wide are Omiya (6) and Ajani (7). Ajani (7) is trained by Peter and Paul Snowden and their horses seem to perform well in Queensland. It has the services of Blake Shinn – but barrier 20 may see him running out on the Gold Coast beach to get home here. Hashtag Hero (1) ran a second to Amiya (6) in a recent barrier trial but has drawn a little better in 3. An open race – maybe one to watch and see where the jockeys decide is the fastest way home!

Selections: 9-14-3-6 rough chances 1-3-7 and 18.

Race 2

I like the two locally trained horses here, Queen Tara (3) trained by Toby Edmonds and Red Scarlet (6) trained by Helen Page. They both have won here previously at the track and I am a big believer that this can be an advantage on these days. Queen Tara comes off a nice win last start at Doomben, whilst Red Scarlet has won his last three starts here at the track – he has had a month between runs and could be some value around the $9 mark.

Naranja (8) carried me last start at Murwillumbah (63kgs) – down in weight but has drawn poorly out in 16. He too should race well if he gets any luck from the wide barrier. The Chris Anderson trained Mishani El Lobo (5) comes off two recent wins and looks for a hat trick here this weekend. In late mail Queen Tara has been well backed to win here firming from $4.50 to $3.20 – the money is on!

Selections: 3-6-8-5 rough chance 1.

**************************************************************************************************

Race 3

This is a good race with some of the fancied runners drawn wide here. Pepperano (4) is back down in weight and has drawn nicely. It has been sensationally backed from $8 into $4.80 in the early markets. Madotti (5), trained by Matthew Dunn, is to be ridden by Tye Angland, who has an impressive strike rate on the mare riding her 4 times for 2 wins and a second placing. I think she does go better on a hard fast track – she gets that this weekend!

Siegfried (7), trained on the track by Toby Edmonds and has the inform Jeff Lloyd in the saddle, won well last start at Doomben. The stable mate of Pepperano is Havasay (13). I have been waiting for this one to draw a barrier and finally this week he has drawn barrier 8. Look for an improved performance this week. In His Stride (6) has been set for this race – but has drawn wide and does race in back in the pack and flash late. If there is some speed on here it would not be surprised to see him flash out wide on the track.

Selections: 5-4-7-13 rough chance 6.

**************************************************************************************************

Race 4

The stayers race on Magic Millions day – a tough race! The Darren Weir trained Stratum Star (1) comes off a six week break after a nice win at Ascot in Western Australia last start. Boom Time (3) from the David Hayes and Tom Dabernig stables has won his last three starts and gets in here well with 54 kilograms – Craig Williams is reunited with the stallion on the Gold Coast and has an unblemished record on him with two rides for two wins. Ben Currie has Col ‘n Lil (4) engaged here and he did run a great race last start at Eagle Farm when Kerrin McEvoy rated the mare well.

San Telmo (9) trained by Brad Smith I think is weighted to win here – however, barrier 16 may prove a stumbling block at the Coast. I am sure that Brenton Avdulla will ride the gelding quiet and then unleash at them as they come around the turn. There is a roughie in the race that I saw here last week – Bold Heart (14). I thought the run last week was good and with and extra 400m this week the three year old gelding could be coming home hard. In summary if Boom Time (3) can convert his Melbourne form here on Magic Millions day it could be a great bet!

Selections: 3-1-4-9 rough chance 14.

***************************************************************************************************

Race 5

Well this is one of my best for the day – probably each way with so many chances here and at some nice odd of $8, I am declaring Pioneering (11) with the Waller/Bowman combination to get the cash. Last start she was drawn wide – carried a massive weight and still ran a gallant second. She has had a recent barrier trial to get her ready for this assignment – she is the one to beat here. The stable mate Elle Lou (8) returns to where she won her first race (the Magic Millions Maiden) in 2015. She is a chance here on her recent runs as well.
Egyptian Symbol (3) was dominant last start winning at Wyong in a good time – she will be the danger.

Kinshachi (6) from the Godolphin stables showed her Sydney form was above average when she stepped out at Eagle Farm on New Year’s Eve and raced away with that race. Denpurr (14) from the Snowden yards didn’t really appreciate the Canterbury race track last start, I would overlook that run and she could find a place here at nice odds.

Private Secretary (9) has barrier trialled at Warwick Farm since her narrow defeat at Eagle Farm in late November – she drew wide that day and had no luck and her bad fortune continues here this week drawing barrier 17. She has a knack of performing well fresh.

Selections: 11-3-6-8 rough chances 9 and 14.

*************************************************************************************************

Race 6 – Magic Millions Cup

Lucky Hussler (1) won this race last year with 60.5kgs with Glen Boss aboard – can Darren Weir and the seven year old gelding repeat the dose in 2017? I put the mock of Most Important (2) last start when I thought the 58 kilograms may have hindered his chances at Eagle Farm but he proved me wrong and won the race – but is he a genuine 1400m horse? I am asking a lot of questions at the moment here.

Snippets Land (7) is one from Peter and Paul Snowden stables who had a good winter carnival in Brisbane last year. I think last start at Rosehill the run was good – can he get lucky here at the Gold Coast? I suppose since I love beagles the omen tip is Snoopy (10) from the Hawkes team – he normally races handy in all his races and this track may suit him this week.

Brewery (17) was a solid performance here last week and maybe he can back that run up. The mystery runner for mine is Monsieur Gustave (18) who will lead here and has drawn well in barrier 3 – he may just be good enough this week to run them into the ground.

Selections: 7-10-2-1 rough chances 17 & 18.

**************************************************************************************************

Race 7 – 2017 Magic Millions Guineas

Well Winning Rupert (1) has five career starts for five wins. If you read the blogs this week – he can win – he cannot win – well, as I have said for the last three wins here in Brisbane, he wins! Just get on!

If there are any dangers you would have to be impressed with the last two wins of Eckstein (9) who has been set for this race. I was close to Brenton Avdulla last week when he jumped off her after she won at the Gold Coast and reported to trainer Kurt Goldman “that will top her off nice for next week”.

The Waterhouse/Bott trained Global Glamour (2) flew home last start at Eagle Farm. She really does not have any good second up form but the run was awesome and she does race better over longer distances.

There are a couple of roughies here that may be some massive odds for your exotic bets – both are lightly raced – Miss Wonderland (16), trained by Ciaron Maher and syndicated by Wylie Dalziel Roy Higgins Racing and Alter Call (19) trained in Melbourne as well by Mick Price. They could show something here.

Selections: 1-9-2-10 rough chances 16 & 19.

Race 8 – 2017 Magic Millions 2YO Classic

How a week can change things! Last weekend Houtzen (11) came out on her home track and destroyed the field – everyone was saying “amazing”, “awesome” and then she was made favourite for the race. Fast forward to Tuesday and the Toby Edmonds trained filly draws barrier 21 – so the headlines read she can’t win – it is hopeless from out there. So much negative press surrounded the barrier! I would love to swear here and tell you all what I really think – but I will restrain myself.

The other horse that I have been tipping is the Chris Munce trained Ours to Keep (1) with Damian Browne on it. So I am going to be greedy here and bracket them both to win!

I like the David Hayes and Tom Dabernig trained Madeenaty (8) who has drawn barrier one and has led in all her race starts – she could be in this for a long way. Champ Elect (9) the other Munce runner has done nothing wrong with two wins from her two starts. She has drawn wide here in barrier 17 but Kerrin McEvoy is a great rider and his engagement should see the filly be given a nice run.

The money has come for the Chris Waller trained From Within (13) since she drew barrier 7. Hugh Bowman is riding the filly and looking for his third Magic Millions victory after winning previously on Bradbury’s Luck (2005) and Mimi Lebrock (2007).

Three weeks ago Cellargirl (16) just didn’t begin well at Doomben then when she found her feet she made up good ground in the final stages, She has a gear change this week with a visor going on her. Jimmy Orman has his first ride in the Magic Millions on her and she is owned by a number of females – so they are shooting for the female bonus prize money if he can get her home from barrier 6.

Look, it is an open field if you like something here – a name – a jockey or even the colours make sure you have a bet!

Selections: (1-11)-8 -13 rough chances 9 and 16.

*****************************************************************************************************

Race 9 – Myer Magic Millions Sprint

A tough race with many seasoned sprinters to finish off the day!

Target in Sight (4) has been smashed in the early markets backed from $10 to $4.80. The 7 year old gelding is trained by Joe Pride and to be ridden by Brenton Avdulla . Dothraki (2) comes off a very good barrier trial win at Rosehill and is a good price at $6 – he usually runs better second up from a spell but he has had a fair bit of work and a couple of barrier trials to fire him up here for the assault.

Viddora (16) flashed home late behind Hidden Pearl (14) last start and gave me the opinion that the 1200m is what the mare may be looking for. Lloyd Kennewell and Joe Bowditch can get one to peak on the right day. I note that she has started over 1200m three times previously and hasn’t run a place.

Hidden Pearl (14) from the Barry Lockwood stables was super first up from a spell leading all the way at Eagle Farm – she may just run them off their feet this week! Some rough chances in the last could be the Edmonds trained Prompt Return (6) who has won here at the track. The Sydney trained pair of Straturbo (8) and Le Cordon Bleu (10) have both drawn well and may trouble the judge as they cross the line.

Selections: 2-16-14-4 rough chances 6, 8 and 10.

**************************************************************************************************

Early Quaddie (NSW TAB only races 2 to 5) 3,6,8 / 4,5,7,13 / 1,3,4 / 3,6,11 - cost is $108 to $1.

Quadrella (races 6 to 9) 2,7,10 / 1,9 / 1,8,11 / 2,14,16 - cost is $54 to $1.

Small Quaddie (races 6 to 9) 7,10 / 1 / 1,11 / 2,16 - cost is $8 to $1.

MAD Quaddie (races 6 to 9) 10 / 1 / 11 /2 - cost is $1 for $1

Treble (race 6 to 8) 1,9 / 1,8,11 / 2,14,16 - cost is $18 to $1

****************************************************************************************************

Jockey Challenge

Last week I tipped Luke Dittman to get 7 points – he scored 6 points and those who followed me in would have won some good coin with him being $25 in the markets!

This week I am saying it could be a memorable day for the South African – Jeff Lloyd – he may be short odds but I think he looks like he has a solid book of rides.

If you are looking for someone at value – maybe Craig Williams could get on the board early and be hard to run down.

Good luck and good punting!

AND ... have a great Magic Millions Day 2017!
