WINNO'S WINNERS: SUNSHINE COAST, JANAURY 28

By Darren Winningham | Friday, January 27, 2017

Well I hope everyone had a wonderful Australia Day!

I went to Kilcoy and had an amazing day generally as well as managing to bag another four or five ‘Seconds with Winno’ interviews whilst I was there. They will feature in coming weeks – I would like to thank all those people who continue to participate and take the time out of their day to speak to me!

I would like to make special mention of apprentice Nick Keal, who is indentured to Kevin Kemp at Toowoomba. He had three rides on the program for a winning treble. I did manage to catch up with him after his second winner for a “60 Seconds with Winno” – this will feature soon!

Oh, and just for Josh Fleming – Joshua ... Winno did bag five, I repeat 5 winners at Doomben on Australia Day – plus at Kilcoy I tipped a couple of trifectas, quinellas and winners on the day.

Now I have talked myself up – let’s see what I can throw up at Sunshine Coast for Saturday!

Please note the rail is out 3m for the entire circuit and they are forecasting some rain – but the track is currently rated “Good”.

NB: As this form assessment was made prior to race-day, please check final fields and track conditions for any changes on the day.

Race 1

This should win this week – I bet the owners are glad I have tipped it as well (or maybe not!). San Telmo (4) was amazing at the Magic Millions Trophy race and has a good winning record here. If the track is wet do not worry – as this gelding trained by Brad Smith, ridden by Jimmy Orman and part owned by Bryan Meggitt grows webbed feet and motors through the going! I would nearly say I could declare it here!

I am going to throw in a roughie for the exotic punters – Outraged (2). It has a pretty good record here and I think with the bigger, more open track we will see a sharp improvement from this Kelly Schweida trained gelding. I see there has been some long priced money for the Michael Nolan trained Frightening Bolt (7) who will be ridden by Magic Millions program winning jockey Michael “Muppy” Hellyer who resumes from a short spell for his assertive ride on Feltre on Magic Millions day.

Selections: 4-2-6-7.

Race 2

Crack Me Up (1) just has been out of luck this preparation and with the set weights here looks the one to beat. Last start at the Gold Coast on Magic Millions day he was caught in the worst part of the track – look for Damian Browne this week to give the gelding the run of the race for a well overdue victory. Miss Kindilan (9) is trained by Barry Lockwood and his stable has been in great form of late – even better form has been the jockey aboard, Ronnie Stewart. She is only a lightly raced filly and gives me the impression that the mile here will not trouble her – so she looks the likely danger. Steven O’Dea has Doubt Defying (4) engaged here and the gelding has the addition of a tongue tie this week – a notable gear change that may improve his chances.

Selections: 1-9-4-10.

**************************************************************************************************

Race 3

This looks an open race. The Amateur (8) is looking for a hat trick of wins here and does look well placed. The wide barrier (barrier 16) does worry me a little as in his last few starts he has lead in his races and kept the opposition at bay. Jeff Lloyd aboard and trained by Toby Edmonds let’s hope he gets across without using too much petrol and settles early. Capetown Hussy (10) does like this track and has had two wins here. The mare made good ground last start at Doomben and should not be overlooked. Hesitation (11) trained by Kelso Wood I think gets to her best distance of a mile – Larry Cassidy will need some luck and patience with his mare as she is quirky and sometimes a head case to ride.

Selections: 8-10-11-14 rough chance 13.

**************************************************************************************************

Race 4

Look, I think that Kelso Wood has a nice colt here in Snitzkraft (1). He likes to lead and Luke Dittman has been on board for all three career runs so far – he is very short in the markets at $1.40 – but he is no Winning Rupert so I will sit back and watch this race. John Zielke has Make My own Luck (7) engaged here and has enlisted the services of Bobby El-Issa to try and beat the favourite. It looks a race between these two – unless one of the other runners can step out and blow them away. Lady Lark (8) and Mrs Quigley (9) are both big prices here but their first up runs were worthy of a mention and may be some value for your multiples.

Selections: 1-7-8-9.

***************************************************************************************************

Race 5

Tony Gollan has Just Orm (3) and The Ambassadore (4) engaged here. Both look like solid chances and both have wins to their credit second up (they are both second up this week). I am leaning towards Just Orm (3) as the stable’s best placed runner here and some huge odds of around $16. Note it does have a win on the board at the Sunshine Coast as well. The runner that I cannot get out of my head is the top weight Manaya (1) trained by Michael Costa. There was so much hype around this filly prior to her first run at Scone after an amazing barrier trial win. At Scone she tailed out and just smashed them in the straight running wide collecting the opposition quickly. She had a run in a Group race and suffered an injury in August 2016 – I think if she is forward enough she could absolutely destroy this field. Damian Browne is a key booking as well as he is known as the “King of the Sunshine Coast”. An interesting race to say the least!

Selections: 1-3-4-2.

***************************************************************************************************

Race 6

Arki (3) has been in great form winning three in a row but has a four week break between runs before stepping out here this weekend . Sentimental Prince (4) comes off consecutive wins and has a jockey change with Jeff Lloyd replacing the suspended Robbie Fradd. I think it is a race between these two. Cashing Up (5) won here last start and will round out the placings.

Selections: 4-3-5-11.

Race 7 – 2017 Coastline BMW Sunshine Coast Cup 2017

I just do not know what to tip here! I can see multiple horses making their claims and runs late – horses such as Sir Moments (1), Jumbo Prince (2), Sold For Song (8) and In His Stride (15). I know they all put in amazing runs at the Gold Coast over the Magic Millions Carnival with the exception of Sold for Song who raced at Caulfield. They all have the form on the board to demand respect and tip them all on top.

I always remember this race for roughies winning – something usually wins and the place getters are all massive prices. I have put some pressure on Michael “Muppy” Hellyer here to ride Banda Spice (17) handy to the lead and keep her going on her home track. I know she is up in class but with a soft run near the lead I think she could be one at odds here. The other runner I like is Binnalong Road (13) who has had a stable change from Mack Griffith to the strong Toby Edmonds yards on the Gold Coast. He is an eight year old gelding who was just being weighted out of races in Northern NSW as his rating is so high. Down to 54 kilograms in this race and Josh Oliver to ride – I think he is a great each way chance!

You could not be more impressed with the runs of Sir Moments (1) and In His Stride (15) at the Gold Coast on Magic Millions day. They both have not won here but will be swooping late I am sure. Sold for Song (8) is a favourite of mine and she does like this track and does go well for Jimmy Orman – Kevin Kemp deserves a change of luck with this mighty mare who tries her guts out every time she goes around. An open field – I am going for some value – but it may be best to go wide and box five or six in your trifectas and first fours to clean up!

Selections: 17-13-8-1 rough chances 2 and 15.

Race 8

Wow, this is as tough as the last race. Many chances and a very open field. Irish Constabulary (1) really goes well at this track and trainers John Symons and Sheila Laxon have decided to put on Rebecca Williams and take her three kilogram claim getting the gelding in well here. Do not despair Rebecca has ridden the gelding for a win previously so she knows how to ride him! Murt the Flirt (2) put in a great run in the last race on the Magic Millions day coming wide and finishing a commendable third. Chris Symons makes the trek north again to ride the five year old gelding.

Royal Occasion (6) has a good second up record and will be storming home late as well. He is well in with the claim for apprentice Lani Fancourt. Denarius (11) has been repeatedly scratched in recent weeks – he does race well fresh and is well placed here and has regular rider Andrew Spinks back aboard this week. Notonyourlife (12) ran well behind Private Secretary at the Gold Coast last start – the five year old mare could show up here. Oberland (13) from the Robert Heathcote yards is up in grade but down in weight and does run his best races here. As you can see I have no idea and really no preference in this race at all. I am really struggling. For the record:

Selections: 6-11-1-2 rough chances 12 and 13.
