MY CALL: ABSORBING WINX'S ALL CONQUERING DOMINANCE

By David Fowler | Tuesday, March 21, 2017

David Fowler is the principal thoroughbred caller for Radio TAB. David, who is a keen form student and punter, has enjoyed a lifetime involvement in the racing media. His personal blog, ‘My Call’, appears exclusively on HRO.

Winx is seriously starting to test our minds and memories.

While the water cooler argument for the younger brigade is Winx versus Black Caviar, older heads are starting to question traditional thinking.

I'm one of them and am certain I'm not alone.

Kingston Town and to a lesser degree Manikato were the benchmark champions for those who grew up following the sport in the seventies and eighties.

Makybe Diva and Black Caviar entered the arena to challenge the might of the "King and the Man" but they were champions in a fairly specific zone, staying and sprinting respectively.

Winx's dominance on a wide distance range on all sorts of tracks must surely test our boyhood or girlhood idols.

And the story hasn't been closed off yet with a third Cox Plate firmly on the horizon.

A politician made a surprise visit to the Gold Coast races on the weekend.

One Nation trump Pauline Hanson was on hand to present the trophies for one of the features.

I'm not privy to the background but the Gold Coast is certainly not the only race club courting her.

A state election is widely tipped to be held in September and One Nation could easily hold the balance of power.

Talk about square pegs and round holes!

My mail is there is close to a $180 million in infrastructure requests from the three racing codes.

Only problem is that there is only $53 million in the first tranche of funding.

Expect plenty of sad faces in the next month.

The grapevine suggests the Gold Coast club has applied for funding for track lighting.

I must confess I've had a change of heart on this issue.

There is no doubt Gold Coast would be an ideal venue for night racing during summer, coinciding with Moonee Valley.

Will the wish make the cut?

I'm informed the bucketful of rain over the last few days has been a godsend for the under siege Eagle Farm track.

The month long gap between meetings gives the club every chance to be spot on for April 15.
