SIXTY SECONDS WITH WINNO: STEPHANIE LACY

By Darren Winningham | Monday, July 24, 2017

Winno was planning to catch up with Stephanie Lacey after she rode two winners at Kilcoy back on the Anzac Day meeting in April. However, she rode a winner the next day at the Sunshine Coast and then she broke her hand the week after at the Sunshine Coast.

So we took some time out to catch up again at Kilcoy on her first day back after injury.

Since then Stephanie has been riding winners across the State and on Saturday 22 July landed her first Saturday metropolitan win at Doomben in only her second Saturday metropolitan ride ... when saluting on “Backslapper” for trainer Steve Tregea.

She rode it a treat ... making it an absolutely perfect tome for Stephanie to go SIXTY SECONDS WITH WINNO!

Hi Steph. Do you have a nickname?

“Pitty” – because it is short for Pitbull. I will take on anyone and never give up!

How long have you been riding?

I started riding on Valentine’s Day 2015.

Whose stable have you been attached to as an apprentice?

Well, I had a few masters throughout my apprenticeship.
I have just left Paul Duncan and have recently moved to John Symons and Sheila Laxon.

Your fondest memory of working for Paul Duncan?

I rode my first provincial winner for him at Kilcoy – Nautilus.

Best thing you like about your work?

Travelling around the country side – I do lots of travelling, nearly all over Queensland, most of NSW and I have had a trip to Adelaide.

What is your favourite track to ride

Probably my home track – the Sunshine Coast. It is so big and roomy. Everyone has a really bad habit o coming off the fence – I cannot tell you how many races I have won by coming up along the fence.

What do you do when you cannot sleep?

Nothing really. I don’t have that problem.I sleep pretty well.

Jockeys start early in the morning what time do you get up to start work?

The alarm goes off at 2.45am each morning. I am at the stables at 3.30am – ready to start work!

How do you prefer to be woken up in the morning?

Well my partner, Corey Geran, normally stabs me in the ribs – with some comments like ..."***... get up!”

Name a memorable day in the saddle?

When I won the apprentices race at Murray Bridge, I rode Beleageur, trained by Karen Byrnes in the last heat of the National Apprentice Series in 2016.

What is your favourite horse you have ridden?

Platters – out at Roma he is trained by Ben Waldron.

What was the turning point in your career?

When I won that race in Adelaide, Murray Bridge, I had just got my full provincial licence, and it gave me a good kick along.

What are you always late for?

I am late for most things to be honest. I struggle to be on time.

What excuse do you use when you are late?

I slept in!

If you could change careers tomorrow what would you do?

I would love to be a Vet.

What is your favourite music?

Anything really. I like it all – whatever is on the radio.

What is the most embarrassing song on your phone?

“Barbie Girl” – by Aqua.

What is your favourite TV show?

One on Netflix called “Thirteen Reasons Why” and the other one is “Suits”

What is your favourite gadget?

My car – it is a Holden Cruz. I bought it brand new! It is black with dark window tint.

What would you chose as your last meal?

Spaghetti on toast – real simple!

Name one person who you want to have dinner with?

My Grandad – he lives in New Zealand – I haven’t seen him for a few years – nearly 5 years ago.

Name one thing you could not live without?

My cats – I have two! Their names are Daisy and Nellie! I also have a red cattle dog – her name is Roxy.

What is your greatest fear?

Heights – I hate high heights

Name one of your favourite places to be?

Anywhere really – as long as it doesn’t involve work.

Where would you like to visit or holiday?

Ragland – a little beach town in New Zealand. It is on the north island. When I was growing up I used to go there every year for X-mas. I miss it so much.

NRL/AFL favourite team?

I don’t really follow either.

State of Origin time – NSW or QLD?

Actually neither – ALL BLACKS all the way – in Rugby Union!

Who do you talk to most on the phone?

Probably Corey. He rings me randomly – or when he wants to get out of work! I suppose I have to talk to him. He is my manager.

What are you must grateful for everyday?

Being able to ride horses – I love it.

What landmark or item symbolises Australia?

Skippy – or kangaroos.

What do you like to put on a sandwich?

Ham and Cheese – brown bread and you must cut the crust off – no butter and a little bit of salt and pepper and a little bit of mayonnaise!

Have you anything unusual you put on sandwiches?

Will tell you if you don’t judge me. Nutella and salami on a sandwich. (Winno responds “that is gross”)

What toppings do you like on your pizza?

I like Hawaiian deep pan pizzas – from Dominos

Do you have a favourite fragrance?

Not really – whatever I pull out of the drawer to be honest. Corey does buy me some nice ones as well!

What chocolates do you like?

I LOVE chocolates! My favourite is the new raspberry chocolate from Cadbury!

How do you define success?

As long as you’re enjoying whatever you are doing at life.

Who is you man crush?

Dan Carter – he is an All Blacks player.

Who is your girl crush?

None really – I am not into girls.

Tell us something that may surprise us about you

I am mortally terrified of clowns and frogs.

(Winno says – umm next meeting at Kilcoy I will turn up in a clown suit!)

Stephanie says please don’t I will cry!

If you are down to your last $10 what would you spend it on?

A massive bowl of spaghetti.

Would you make it or buy it?

No way am I making it – I would buy it!

(Winno said “that is just weird for a kiwi; you cannot put lamb in spaghetti.”)

Stephanie said “I do love a good lamb steak though!”

Okay – I need to ask some more questions now – “have you ever ridden a sheep a New Zealand?”

Well not in the way you are implying, I do not have the right utensils (laughing).

But I have ridden one in the paddock – no saddle – just jumped on one. It was a massive fail. I just rolled off the side – a bit of a dent in the pride.

Thanks for spending 60 seconds with Winno Steph!
