SCST SEPT 13 - BETTER LET LOOSE ROMPS IN ON DEBUT

By Graham Potter | Tuesday, September 15, 2009

Sunshine Coast, September 13, 2009.
Track - Good 3. Rail - Out 2m.
Maiden Handicap (4yo and Up) - 1000m. Time: 58.45.
1 Better Let Loose; 2 Nerangatang; 3 Running Fox.

The David Kelly trained Better Let Loose sparkled on debut when he gave his rivals a galloping lesson, doing it at both ends, to streak home by a clear-cut 2.00 length margin.

The four-year-old showed good gate speed to easily gain the early lead and he set a lively gallop to the turn. Saint Laurent tried to stay with the leader but that soon became an uneven battle and Saint Laurent weakened and dropped away halfway up the straight leaving Nerangatang and Running Fox to chase the winner home without ever looking likely to threaten his superiority.

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer David Kelly: “Yeah the plan was to go out hard. I rode him in a jump-out the other day and he showed great speed, so we were confident that he could lead if necessary. We just hoped that he could sustain the effort - and he did.”

Jockey Paul Hammersley: “They said it had shown a lot of speed in the jump-outs he’s had. The general plan was to try and get a trail because he always looks around a lot, but there wasn’t a great deal of speed on, so there was no point in pulling him back.”

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
The start was delayed when Saint Laurent proved difficult to load. Trainer L. Gough was advised that a warning was being placed on the mare. Bag The Profit (M. Hellyer) began awkwardly and shifted out, making contact with Maali (S. Katsidis).

Shebearni (J. Taylor), which was slow to begin, was further inconvenienced by Not Declared (C. Priest), which shifted out. Shebearni then commenced to race ungenerously for a short distance thereafter.

Leaving the 500m, Maali became awkward on the heels of Bag The Profit, which commenced to lose ground and near the 450m shifted out to improve. Black Katana (C. Reith) and Miss Ironside (A. Pattillo) raced wide for the majority of the event.
