WINNO'S KILCOY KASH: KILCOY, AUGUST 19

By Darren Winningham | Friday, August 18, 2017

This weekend the Kilcoy Race Club will host a TAB meeting on Saturday.

What about this ... the Kilcoy Race Club has opened the gates for this meeting!

That’s right – FREE ADMISSION!

The track is rated GOOD – the rail in the normal position and the weather is forecast to be great!

I will be at the track to cover the three pacing races on the course proper and the three mini trot races with the kids and, of course, in addition to all this fun I will cover the solid six race program featuring the Butler McDermott Lawyers Vietnam Veterans Cup for 2017.

NB: As this form assessment was made prior to raceday, please check final fields and track conditions for any changes on the day.

**************************************************************************************************

Race 1

Last Round (3) has had a stable change from Brett Cavanough in NSW to Bradley Hudson. His style of racing is normally to lead and, drawn from barrier 1, he should be able to lead this lot easy.

The watch horse is the Michael Lakey trained Dream Captain (2) with no official trial form. Lakey’s horses normally run well for him here. I note that the 2016/17 Toowoomba premiership winning jockey Beau Appo has been booked for the ride – don’t let this one get under your guard!

Selections: 3-2-5-9

Race 2

A small but competitive field here for the second on the card.

I am tipping an early race to race double for apprentice Hannah Phillips and trainer Bradley Hudson. Phillips rides Tin’s Pocket and, with her claim and the fact that he does race on the speed, I think he ticks a few boxes here. His last run at Doomben was full of credit – back in class here this weekend – looks a solid chance.

Karaharaga (5) looks the likely danger – he races on the speed and handy as well. Hannah English (the other Hannah) is riding this one!

One thing is for sure a Hannah will win the race!

Selections: 2-4-1-5

**************************************************************************************************

Race 3

This is the first leg of the Quaddie!

Captain’s Jewel (2) is trained by Ben Currie. She was unlucky last start at Toowoomba when she was beaten in the shadows of the post after taking the lead at the turn. Beau Appo takes the ride here. This five year old mare has had a look at the Kilcoy track back in June – she failed that start – but I think it was due to the heavy track.

This weekend here she looks a great bet – just get on!

Mr Meticulous (3) is trained by Rod Hilton at Texas. The gelding is drawn well in barrier 2 and I think apprentice Adam Spinks, who rides this track well, may just take this one to the lead and try and hold off the challengers in the straight.

Selections: 2-3-1-6

Race 4

This is the first leg of the Treble this week!

Well this could be a winner for the formidable Lakey/Appo combination – making it a race to race double for Appo with any luck here! They combine with Our Jamaica (2).

I was here when this mare won first up over this distance back in April. Since then she has had a string of placings and I really think she deserves a change in luck and should be in the winner’s stall this weekend.

I must put a watch on Outback Storm (6) trained by Neil Hocking at Eagle Farm. My spies tell me that this five year old gelding trialled nicely two weeks ago at Doomben when narrowly beaten. He has a good first up record and could be the one to challenge in this race.

Hannah Phillips has another nice ride here aboard Orleans. This one was originally trained in Sydney before being sent north to be trained by Barry Phillips. He notched his first win in two starts in Queensland last start at Nanango where he ran a slick time for the 1000 metres. This could be one with a future around the bush.

Selections: 2-6-1-4

Race 5

This is the feature race on the program – the Butler McDermott Lawyers Vietnam Veterans Cup for 2017. I am certain that many Veterans will all be here for this race meeting as they are each year – a great spectacle!

This is an open affair – I really do not have any confident selection for this race.

I will go with Prospecting (3) from the Jason Noud stables a Deagon to be ridden by Tasha Chambers. Last weekend this gelding led at Doomben in the race won by Ingeegoodbe. I hope he can back up here after that solid run. If so, he could be hard to beat.

Bay Raider (5) doesn’t win out of turn. He has had a fortnight off since his last run and with Adam Spinks aboard I think the reduced weight may assist the chances of this runner.

Novative (1) from the Ben Currie stables has been working back into form after a short let up. Apprentice Rick Johnston-Bell takes 2 kilograms off this one with his claim. He still is carrying a large weight but I think he may be ready to show something this weekend.

Selections: 3-5-1-6

Race 6

There are a few track specialists engaged in this race.

I am tipping the top weight Our Clarky (1) who has four wins at the track! This could end the day well for trainer Bradley Hudson and apprentice jockey Hannah Phillips.

Coonowrin Ruby (7) has an impressive record as well with 3 starts here for 2 wins and a third. I think back on a good surface and a track that she likes apprentice Adam Spinks should be able to give her the run of the race here.

Legs Unbarred (6) is trained by Wendy Bannerot. She has won two from three starts here. I think that over the last eight weeks we have not seen the true form of this one with her having to run on rain affected tracks which is not her go. If she gets an easy lead and left alone in front she will be hard to run down!

Selections: 1-7-6-3

Jockey Challenge

Hannah Phillips looks like she has a great book of rides and should be winning the Jockey Challenge. She does ride this track well!

Quaddie (Races 3 to 6)

2,3 / 1,2,6 / 1,3,5 / 1,6,7 - cost is $54 to $1

Value Quaddie (Races 3 to 6)

2 / 2 / 1,3 / 1,7 - cost is $4 to $1

Treble (Races 4 to 6)

1,2,6 / 1,3,5 / 1,6,7 - cost is $27 to $1
