WINNO'S WINNERS: DOOMBEN, SEPTEMBER 2

By Darren Winningham | Thursday, August 31, 2017

DOOMBEN – SATURDAY, 2 SEPTEMBER 2017

This week we are back at Doomben where the track should be rated as “GOOD” and a warm day is forecast for Saturday. The now usual nine race program is scheduled. The rail is out 2.5 metres the entire course.

As in recent weeks, I’m still finding it hard to really get into these meetings – so bet carefully! For that reason I am going to provide a very brief overview for Doomben week and I will put my main focus on the Sydney meeting at Randwick (which will follow in a separate story).

I big shout out to Sky Racing’s Josh Fleming who has made the long trek out to the iconic Birdsville meeting.

Thanks for the invite mate! Maybe next year I can carry your bags!

But I don’t think you should get away with it that lightly so I am going to issue you a challenge to provide a blog on your trip and exploits out there exclusively for HRO followers ... as I did with my Darwin Diary.

I can’t wait to read it!

NB: As this form assessment was made prior to raceday, please check final fields and track conditions for any changes on the day.

*************************************************************************************************

Race 1

Impregnable (4) was back in distance last start I think the gelding will be better suited over the 1200 metres.

Tony Gollan has a few runners here with all good chances. I think the best of them is Ignite The Light (7). This week it has a gear change with a tongue tie being applied. I think this should see a much better performance from the horse this weekend – so he is my top selection in an open race to start the program.

Selections: 7-4-10-12

Race 2

This race has a small field. Not much to say here so it will be short and brief.

Havasay - the end!

Just get on!

He is in dynamic form since returning from a spell.

Selections: 5-4-3-2

*************************************************************************************************

Race 3

I have been on the Rob Heathcote trained Ingeegoodbe (5) in his last two starts. I see no reason to hop off this weekend – sure he is up in grade and meeting tougher opposition but he looks one that is really developing and will be hard to beat.

The runner I like as a genuine danger is the Aiden Nunn (from Tasmania) trained Brilliant Jet (7). The key booking of Jim Byrne and the run over 6 weeks ago leads me to think that this one may be ready to step out and show a dramatic improvement in form.

The Michael Costa trained Stanley (2) has been racing consistently and will be in the finish as well.

Selections: 5-7-2-4

*************************************************************************************************

Race 4

Not a race I can get keen on.

Toby Edmonds and Jeff Lloyd combine again with Plucky Girl (11). She won well on EKKA day – stepping up to city weekend class this weekend.

I think she can make the transition.

Selections: 11-2-4-10

**************************************************************************************************

Race 5

Prime Target (12) I think will better suited here at Doomben. It also has a senior rider aboard this weekend, the inform Brad Stewart. I like this one each way! Great odds as well - $12 each way all day!

Hanwritten (3) normally performs better second up. He gets that chance this weekend. But a word of warning he has never won over 1200 meters!

Khalama (15) has won two in a row over 1050 metres and has been impressive in each of those wins. However, I am not sure if she will run a solid 1200 metres. She is down in weights this week. Has Jim Byrne back aboard and there is some speed present in the race. Maybe all of that will assist her.

Selections: 12-3-15-7

*************************************************************************************************

Race 6

This is a tough way to start the Quaddie.

I have gone for some bug numbers here – may as well try and play bingo in this field!

Rancho Montoya (15) is my top selection. The run last start was noteworthy and I think second up over the mile – this will suit the Stuart Kendrick colt.

Pinolino (11) I think is better suited over the mile. Last start the 2040 metres just didn’t seem to suit the mare.

Ahndras (9) always runs well second up – so the mare fits that brief this week and she does love the longer distances. Make sure you include this one in your multiples!

Selections: 15-11-9-10

*************************************************************************************************

Race 7

An open race over the mile – (sigh) it just keeps getting harder!

Sheiswhatsheis (4) gets a new rider this weekend with Jag Guthmann-Chester taking over from the injured Lani Fancourt who had a fall last Friday at Murwillumbah.

Get well soon Lani. I hope you are back soon!

Jag will ride this one well in front and his 3 kilogram allowance will come in handy here.

The stable mate Pindan Pearl (10) just didn’t fire last start – it may pay to overlook that run. It was an odd run race and I think this week she will be back in the mix.

The other chance is One Inch Punch (7) who has a wonderful second up record. I know he has never won over the 1600 metres but the first up run suggests that this will be right up his alley this weekend.

Selections: 4-10-7-11

*************************************************************************************************

Race 8

I see QSCAN Radiology Clinics are sponsoring this race – a great company and a great bunch of doctors. I hope they are at the races!

I suppose the topical tip for the race is Cellargirl (2). We all know doctors like their wine and fine drinks! So I think this Kelly Schweida trained filly is the one to beat after her dominant first up win.

The top weight Mishani Bullitt (1), trained by Chris Anderson, is a class colt and has a strong second up record. He has shown his previous preparation that this distance is right up his alley.

Toby Edmonds has I Am Impinge (8) who settled off the pace last start and flew home late to be narrowly defeated. This weekend, over 1350 metres, he looks well placed and Jeff Lloyd takes the ride. There has been some good early support as well for this one – currently around $3.60.

Selections: 2-1-8-4

**************************************************************************************************

Race 9

The last race on a nice race program – I hope that I am still going strong!

Manias (11) is in great form. Rob Heathcote has got this gelding firing. Jimmy Orman retains the ride.

Steven O’Dea trains Sabkaht (4) who has an awesome second up record. I see that he has gone for the 3 kilogram claim this weekend by putting on Jag Guthmann-Chester. I really do think that this will help his chances.

Raja Ampat (6) has won two in a row at the Sunshine Coast . He has some good form, however, he has never won at Doomben.

I would highlight that Denarius (5) had winkers added last weekend and ran a solid race on the Gold Coast. Back at his favourite track this weekend – look out for a better run!

Selections: 11-4-6-5

**************************************************************************************************

Early Quaddie (races 2 to 5 NSW TAB only)

5 / 2,5,7 / 2,11 / 3,12,15 - cost is $18 for $1
Quadrella (races 6 to 9)

9,11,15 / 4,7,10 / 1,2,8 / 4,6,11 - cost is $81 to $1

Small Quaddie (races 6 to 9)

9,15 / 4,7 / 2,8 / 4,11 - cost is $16 to $1

Mad Quaddie (races 6 to 9)

9,15 / 4,7 / 2 / 11 - cost is $4 to $1

Treble (races 7 to 9)

4,7,10 / 1,2,8 / 4,6,11 - cost is $27 to $1

Jockey Challenge

This week it looks like a battle royal between the old warhorses Jeff Lloyd, Jim Byrne and the young whipper snapper Jag Guthmann-Chester! It could nearly be a triple dead heat if results go to form and they retain all their rides.
