WINNO'S WINNERS: DOOMBEN, SEPTEMBER 9

By Darren Winningham | Friday, September 8, 2017

DOOMBEN – SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 9 2017

This week we are back at Doomben. The track should be rated as “GOOD” and a warm day is forecast for Saturday with a nine race program is scheduled. The rail is out 5.5 metres the entire course this week.

Not too sure how the rail out will affect the racing but I would think we may see a few leaders winning and maybe some winners coming wider later in the day.

Sky Racing’s Josh Fleming has survived the trip out to the Birdsville Cup. It seems that he finally has tipped a winner – the first one in ten years – well the first Birdsville Cup winner anyway!

Winno was in some good form last weekend in Brisbane tipping four winners last weekend – not a bad effort. I stayed solid with the inform Rob Heathcote stables and he had two winners on the program – both of them I managed to tip on top!

I would like to give a shout out to the Kilcoy Race Club Chairman and resident Doomben bookmaker Con Searle.

Earlier last week Con got the call up for his kidney transplant. Unlucky, or lucky, for him he was getting the surgery at the Princess Alexander Hospital so I managed to stop by each day and make sure he was doing well.

On Monday morning this week I walked in to see him and he was gleaming – a big smile on his face and doing well. Not to mention that his horse Zouzoukakia won the first race at the Sunshine Coast the day before, perfectly ridden by Jag Guthmann-Chester and prepared to the minute by Kevin Kemp in Toowoomba.

So I am sure all the readers of my blog and the people who know him well wish him a speedy recovery and all the best!

NB: As this form assessment was made prior to raceday, please check final fields and track conditions for any changes on the day.

**************************************************************************************************

Race 1

Whypeeo (1) was dominant at the Gold Coast last start with a gear change. This weekend he looks a good bet to start off the program – just get on!

As for the rest take your pick!

Selections: 1-4-2-3

*************************************************************************************************

Race 2

This race has a small field. Not much to say here so it will be short and brief.

Of The Day (3) is in great form – two in a row now looking for a hat trick on Saturday.

Robbie Fradd and Tony Gollan look like they have a mortgage on the race.

Selections: 3-1-7-8

*************************************************************************************************

Race 3

Mishani Sleuth (7) was impressive last start behind Manias three weeks ago. Manias came out last weekend and won again so I would think that on that form this Chris Anderson trained gelding looks a solid chance in this race.

El Sasso (3) looked a little big in the yard prior to his first up run at Doomben. I think he will strip fitter this run and may challenge late in the straight.

Beat Street (6) probably was possibly not suited at the Gold Coast last start. Back at Doomben this week look for an improved run.

Selections: 7-3-6-5

*************************************************************************************************

Race 4

Another small field with only seven runners – pretty disappointing for an Open race.

Frespanol (2) won well last start with Robbie Fradd in the saddle. I got off him last start and of course he saluted.

Charlie Boy (1) is the stable mate of Frespanol (2) and they look like they will fight this race out.

Tony Gollan looks like he will have a quinella in the race.

Selections: 2-1-6-3

*************************************************************************************************

Race 5

Hot Gossip (11) won well first up from a spell. She looked impressive winning after a short let up. Tony Sears has had some luck recently with his team in town. I think she should be able to go on with it here. Although the race is very open – she does look well placed again.

Gatlingburg (5) has been working through his grades well and steps up here to Saturday city grade this weekend. Bridget Grylls has a great association with this gelding and she retains the ride this weekend.

Lady Sioux (6) was very solid last start after being transferred from Townsville to the Steven O’Dea yards. The first up run for the new stable was solid. I think now, with that run under her belt, she will be difficult to beat.

Selections: 11-6-5-9

*************************************************************************************************

Race 6

This is a tough way to start the Quaddie – one of these 2040 metres races where a different one wins each weekend.

I think that the handicapper may have caught up with the topweight Mr Epic (1) with the 59.0 kilogram, but this Toby Edmonds trained gelding has been racing in consistent form and so probably will be hard to beat.

I am not saying he cannot win. I have just looked for some value and I was pretty impressed with the run of the Matthew Dunn trained Manndawi (2) last start when defeated in the final 20 metres by Ingeegoodbe. This form was franked last weekend when Ingeegoodbe came from an impossible position and won in the final stride. I am going to gamble that this form is the form to follow.

Tap This (7) was solid behind Mr Epic (1) last start at the Gold Coast two weeks ago. Since then she has had a solid hit out in a barrier trial at Deagon on Tuesday this week over 1050 metres to sharpen him up for the weekend’s assignment.

Selections: 2-1-7-4

**************************************************************************************************

Race 7

I am not sure who to put on top here. The Stuart Kendrick runner looks the one to beat here - Scrabble (5).

Again the Matthew Dunn stable from Murwillumbah is well represented with Madame Lily (8), who was impressive in her first run for the stable over 1050 at Doomben when beaten by Bonsho. The 1200 metres of this race would appear right up her alley this weekend . She does race off the speed and thunder home late so if there is some genuine speed on in the race this week watch out for this one and Robbie Fradd to flash out wide in his green silks with a big white Vee on them.

Selections: 5-8-7-4

**************************************************************************************************

Race 8

I found it hard to get enthusiastic about this race to be honest.

I was pretty keen on the run of Steven O’Dea trained Sabkhat (6) last start over the 1350 metres. This week the gelding steps up to the mile and I like the way he motored home last start with Jag Guthmann-Chester in the saddle. He stays aboard this weekend.

The John Meagher team has another strong chance in Monteux (4) in the race. This one won over the longer distance of 2040 metres last start. This week he comes back in distance but as with the stable mate Tap This (in race 6), Meagher has put him over 1050 metres in a trial on Tuesday at Deagon. This astute trainer knows his horses well. He may just surprise us all this weekend with a great training effort to get this one home.

Then you have the wily Brian Smith who had a winner last weekend. He has Monster of Energy (3) engaged and has put Jeff Lloyd aboard this week. I think it would pay to overlook the run at the Gold Coast last start as I think the track and the race just didn’t play into his hands. Look he doesn’t win often but when BJ Smith gets them right they can produce some scintillating runs!

Selections: 6-4-3-1

**************************************************************************************************

Race 9

Rob Heathcote has No Annamossity (8) in again this weekend. To me he has been racing without luck since resuming. This weekend he has the tongue tie removed and a bit lifter applied for the first time. I am hoping that this gear change will see him put a win on the board. He is due.

The stable mate is Ocean City (9) who is drawn poorly in barrier 16. I think he can be ridden off the speed and saved for one final sustained crack at them in the straight.

D’Harmony (4) is another solid runner for the Steven O’Dea and Jag Guthmann-Chester team on the program. Here the gelding meets Bourbon Road (1) five kilograms better for his recent defeat at the Gold Coast – it could be a race to race double for the O’Dea and JAG team!

Ben Currie has Publishing Power (2) in here as well. I see Mark Pegus takes the ride this weekend – he has been in great form in recent weeks at Toowoomba. This four year old gelding finished second last start behind Havasay who came out last weekend and won again. This may be the form to follow!

Jockey Challenge

This week it looks a battle royal between the South African duo – Jeff Lloyd and Robbie Fradd – but do not underestimate the New Zealander Damian Browne. For the record I am going for Jeff Lloyd just to sneak home!

Finally let’s hope that the short spell for Josh Fleming has improved his tipping – the competition is back on this weekend – so make sure you take a look at our Facebook profiles on Saturday morning as we resume the QLD v NSW battle this weekend!

Good luck and good punting!
