WINNO'S WINNERS: DOOMBEN, OCTOBER 21

By Darren Winningham | Friday, October 20, 2017

DOOMBEN – SATURDAY 21 OCTOBER 2017

Last week WINNO was out of luck at Doomben.

I did warn you all that the meeting was very hard and the races were very open.

The track at Doomben will be rated as “HEAVY” and the rail will be out 3 metres the entire course this weekend. It will be a tough program as there is a forecast of more rain and showers ... although Friday has seen warm conditions across Brisbane and the Doomben track does usually drain well ... so I am not too sure what to expect this weekend.

I was going to call my good friend Josh Fleming. He has been always forward in offering an opinion on the weather, but I remember he has told me that he has retired from being a meteorologist since the last time I gave him a mention here. I think it went, “you are a dead set ... “(Sorry this is a G rated column).

In Queensland news I see that Adrian Coome has retired due to weight problems. He was a super talent and has dominated the Rockhampton and Mackay areas for many years. I would take this opportunity to wish him and his family well in the future. I am certain that whatever career he pursues he will be successful.

What about last weekend at Doomben ... Matthew McGillivray ... four winners on the nine race program! How good is he going at the moment. He may have to submit at some stage to ‘60 seconds with Winno’!

My focus has been on Caulfield all week (see separate article) so I am going to be short and brief with my Doomben commentary.

NB: As this form assessment was made prior to raceday, please check final fields and track conditions for any changes on the day.

**************************************************************************************************

Race 1

Two year olds on a wet track ... REALLY?

No idea to be honest so I have put the numbers in my pillow case and these have what have fallen out!

Selections: 4-1-8-12

***************************************************************************************************

Race 2

I think Peking Road (10) is well placed here. She will handle the going and is at nice $8 odds as well.

The danger is the Toby Edmonds trained Plucky Girl (9) who just seems to be struggling to put a win on the board - maybe things will change this weekend?

Selections: 10-9-11-6

**************************************************************************************************

Race 3

An open distance race over 2200 metres. Not for the first time ... maybe you should go and find something to eat whilst they run this!

My Giuliano (6) has grabbed my attention - trained by Chris Waller and to be ridden by Jim Byrne. This gelding has some great form on a SLOW track but not that good in the heavy. I am hoping that the track improves and then this will give him every chance to post his first win since being relocated to Queensland.

The Tony Gollan trained What’s That (10) has been racing very consistently and I note the engagement of Jeff Lloyd for him again this weekend after he partnered him in his recent win at the Sunshine Coast. Jeff Lloyd seems to get the best out of these stayers each week. I think if you review the statistics in recent months for Saturday he seems to always finish somewhere in the top three!

Selections: 6-10-2-1

**************************************************************************************************

Race 4

A massive field here and it appears there will be a few scratchings with many runners not having riders declared for them at the moment.

I am staying with Bonsho (10). She has solid wet track form and has the added advantage of Emma Ljung and a three kilogram allowance this weekend. I am suggesting that we overlook the recent run at the Gold Coast. I think she will be better suited at Doomben.

As for the rest ... it is tough!

Valfierno (5) has strung two nice wins together - last start winning here on a heavy track - so the conditions should not bother him. The 15 barrier is my only concern as he normally likes to race on the speed.

Selections: 10-5-7-8 rough chance 6

***************************************************************************************************

Race 5

I like the two Tony Gollan runners - Tiyatrolani (7) and Hi I’m Back (4).

Both are well placed here over the 1050 metres. Tiyatrolani (7) is an absolute speed machine - but I am uncertain if she will start. She is right in this if she does!

Jim Byrne rides the other runner Hi I’m Back (4) and I think third up you should see an improved effort!

Tycoon Ace (3) is always competitive in these sprint races in this class. He has been freshened since his last solid win at the Gold Coast eight weeks ago. Trainer Tony Sears will have him ready for this effort.

Selections: 7-4-3-2

**************************************************************************************************

Race 6

This is the first leg of the Quaddie.

Now if you want a lottery - this is it! There have been some early scratchings so it may help -or maybe not!

No confidence at all here sorry punters!

Night Attire (9) was solid behind No Annamossity at Sunshine Coast three weeks ago. He came out last weekend and won so I am staying with that form line as a guide for this race ... so I hope Bridget Grylls, who celebrated her birthday earlier this week, can land a wonderful late birthday present at Doomben this weekend!

Deer Mountain (13) ran a nice race at the Gold Coast a fortnight ago. I think that she will go well here, however jockey Jeff Lloyd will need to get some luck from barrier 20.

Selections: 9-13-10-14

**************************************************************************************************

Race 7

One Metro Win - 1200 metres and a wet track - too hard for mine!

Saint Patrick's Day (6) from Chris Munce Racing looks well placed in this grade and he will handle the damp conditions.

Mishani El Lobo (4) from Chris Anderson Racing likes the wet as well. This may be a battle supreme!

Who will be the victor? Whatever the result, I am certain that if they finish one - two you will see both trainers shaking hands and congratulating each other after the race!

If you are looking for a roughie I will tip you into Desert General (2). The gelding loves bog tracks - runs well first up (he resumes from a 17 week spell). I think he may be a dark horse at around $16.

Selections: 6-4-2-5

**************************************************************************************************

Race 8

I think that wet track specialist Meikas (8) is the way to go here. In recent weeks the Rob Heathcote stable has been in great form and he has formed a formidable partnership with Ronnie Stewart. They pair here again.

I think the $8 on offer is seriously way over the odds. This is my best bet for the day!

Miss Exfactor (3) won well two weeks ago at the Gold Coast and has some solid form on soft tracks so she should be competitive again here this weekend.

Selections: 8-3-2-11 rough chance 1

**************************************************************************************************

Race 9

The last race of the day – phew!

Probably the hardest race of the day as well.

I am at a loss here - no confidence what so ever - I was born on the 9th so I will tip Torgersen (9)!

The way he raced last start at the Gold Coast and won gives me the impression he may get the mile this preparation - in previous campaigns the mile has always eluded him. Robbie Fradd keeps the ride and has been riding in great form recently.

The Amateur (7) looks more like a professional in recent starts winning three in a row. He is now looking for his first Saturday win and to make it four wins in a row ... all with Jeff Lloyd in the saddle! I am just a little concerned with his form on a wet track.

No Annamossity (12) has put two great wins together now since the gear changes. Trevor Patel gets back aboard this week!

This looks like a battle of the nations between jockeys in the last race …. South Africa V India … who will be the victor?

Selections: 9-7-12-8

**************************************************************************************************

Early Quaddie (Races 2 to 5 NSW TAB only)

9,10,11 / 2,6.10 / 5,7,10 / 3,4,7 - cost is $81 for $1

Quadrella (races 6 to 9)

9,10,13 / 2,4,6 / 2,3,8 / 7,8,9,12 - cost is $108 to $1

Small Quaddie (races 6 to 9)

9,13 / 4,6 / 3,8 / 7,9,12 - cost is $24 to $1

Treble (races 7 to 9)

2,4,6 / 2,3,8 / 7,8,9,12 - cost is $36 to $1

Jockey Challenge

This week the field looks like it is a genuine battle between Jeff Lloyd and Jim Byrne– in fact I have them finishing real close together. Jeff Lloyd back on his home turf - look for a big effort from him this weekend.

Best Bet

Race 8 – Meikas (8) – around $8

The tipping competition between Sky Racing’s Josh Fleming and Winno is back again this weekend. Josh had a great win last weekend – and his tip No Annamossity beat my one home as well!

Good luck and good punting!
