WINNO'S WINNERS: DOOMBEN, NOVEMBER 4

By Darren Winningham | Friday, November 3, 2017

DOOMBEN – SATURDAY 4 NOVEMBER 2017

This week I would like to dedicate my tips to the memory of Tim Bell.

As you all are probably aware Tim was taken from us in tragic circumstances two years ago. We all miss his cheeky smile, his wit and humour. I have said this on a number of occasions - we were extremely blessed to see him ride whilst he was with us and we probably all knew the raw potential he had. Like many punters, friends and people in the racing industry we miss him so much but his memory will live on forever.

I know that this time of the year is always difficult for his family and friends. My thoughts are with you all - especially to the Bell Family - Grant, Keiley, Hayden and Sally.

It is hard to forget someone who gave us so much to remember - miss you mate!

We are back at Doomben this weekend. The track is rated “GOOD” at this stage and the rail has been moved out an extraordinary 7 metres for this meeting - this can sometimes favour on pace runners - so be warned!

The other warning I would offer is that there is rain and storms forecast for Friday and Saturday in South East Queensland - this may turn my tips on their head!

NB: As this form assessment was made prior to raceday, please check final fields and track conditions for any changes on the day.

***************************************************************************************************

Race 1

A small field of two year olds this week to start of the program.

The John Zielke trained Hopes Eternal (1) has an unblemished record with two wins from two career starts and it looks hard to beat here. The Zielke stable has been dominating the two year old races so far this season.

I can tell you there is a big push for the Gollan trained runner Ef Troop (3) who destroyed them in a barrier trial a week ago. Matthew McGillivray rides the gelding and he could win on a broomstick at the moment!

This will be an interesting race to open the program.

Selections: 1-3-2-4

Race 2

I don't think anyone missed the run of Valfierno (3) last weekend - held up, got checked and then finally got out and flew home. This weekend over the longer distance of 1200 metres I think the Stuart Kendrick trained gelding is a good thing.

Jetsonic (1) from the Tony Gollan team has been thereabouts since resuming from a spell. This weekend he does get a real chance to post a maiden victory this preparation.

If you want to scout wide Don’t Doubt Marley (8) is well placed here by David Vandyke. I see Darryl “Digger” McLellan has packed up his saddle and whip and is coming to the big smoke to ride this one! He has been in solid form since making a comeback and riding on the Gold Coast.

Selections: 3-1-8-4

***************************************************************************************************

Race 3

Here we go another 2040 metre race on a Saturday - who wants to but their hand up to win this weekend?

Capetown Hussey (5) won well last weekend - but will she back up here this week?

I am still going to put the Chris Waller trained My Giuliano (6) on top here. I think the heavy conditions and the way the track played last start at Doomben didn’t do this Choisir gelding many favours. So I think this weekend we will see a much better performance.

Monteux (3) was not suited last start at the Gold Coast by that track - overlook that run and back at Doomben this weekend I would expect a change of fortune.

Selections: 6-5-3-1

**************************************************************************************************

Race 4

Nilette (10) from the Robert Heathcote team is my on top selection here. Last start she missed the kick, got checked and knocked down and really didn’t really getinto the race - so forget that run and load up here this weekend! A bonus this week is that apprentice Ruby Ride takes the ride and the Snitzel mare gets 3 kilograms off her weight. She is a great bet this weekend if she can get out of the barriers on terms with them. As a matter of fact if she jumps well I reckon Ruby may just press forward and lead or just sit off the speed.

All That Is (5) from the Barry Baldwin stables posted a nice win at the Gold Coast a month ago. Since then she raced at the Sunshine Coast on a heavy track - again overlook that run as she goes much better on top of the ground.

Toby Edmonds has Plucky Girl (7) who failed on a heavy track here a fortnight ago. The mare is not a fan of the heavy tracks and after the race jockey Jeff Lloyd reported to stewards that she didn’t handle the track - so again it may be well worth considering this one here.

Selections: 10-5-7-3

**************************************************************************************************

Race 5

There are some nice types resuming here - Perfect Dare (1), Bidii Babe (2) and Tiyatrolani (6).

This could come down to luck in the running. Now if it rains and the track is wet Bidii Babe (2) from the Heathcote stables will come right into this race - she loves wet tracks!

If they are leading and winning then the Tony Gollan trained Tiyatrolani (6) will be right in the race.

My spies did tell me that this mare had been working well at the track - so I am looking for a forward performance.

Last preparation Perfect Dare (1) resumed and looked like he was in for a nice preparation and it all went pear shaped at Ipswich in the Eye Liner Stakes when he struck a soft track and didn’t like it all. He resumes from a 20 week spell and was recently successful in a striking barrier trial at his home track at Murwillumbah. If there is no rain around in the coming days look for a nice performance by this Matthew Dunn trained gelding.

Selections: 6-1-2-4

****************************************************************************************************

Race 6

This is a tough way to start the Quaddie this weekend. A pretty open field we have to contend with here.

I have put some of the emergencies in my selections here - so I am hoping for a few extra scratchings so they get in!

I was impressed with the run of Takarakka (18) last start when beaten by his stablemate No Annamossity over the mile here - as a matter of fact Josh Fleming and I had a wager on the result and he won - well done Flemo!

Antigone (13) last week at Doomben had no luck in running and was tightened late in the race. The Barry Lockwood mare pulled up lame - look for an improved run this week. I just hope from barrier 14 jockey Ric McMahon can get in and get a nice run.

Scott Morrisey from the Gold Coast has the favourite in the race - Aqua Vite (10). This gelding won on a heavy track last start at the Gold Coast when ridden by Shannon Doyle. He retains the ride here this weekend. If the track is rain affected he will be right in the race.

Another emergency who I have some respect for is the Tony Gollan trained Pillara (18) to be ridden by Matty McGillivray. Last start at the Sunshine Coast he heavy surface didn’t suit the mare. I also think that she is better over a mile and I am looking for an improved effort this weekend.

Overall it is an open race where most of us might be tearing up our Quaddie tickets unless we go wide!

Selections: 17-13-10-18

**************************************************************************************************

Race 7

Zahspeed (12) was tremendous first up for his new stable (Toby Edmonds) at the Sunshine Coast. I note that he goes better over longer distances and I think the 1640 metres this weekend will be right up his alley third up. I did highlight this runner last weekend as one of my best roughies and he was scratched. This weekend Tegan Harrison has the ride and at the nice odds of $8 I am getting on each way!

Lauterbrunnen (5) from the Heathcote yards usually improves third up - he has had 3 weeks off since his last run and is getting back to a distance more suitable for him.

Emphasis (4) ran well second up last start like I predicted. I’m not sure what he will do third up but he will be somewhere in the finish. I see that Robbie Fradd has stayed on the gelding.

Now the really interesting runner is Montauk (3) who ran third in the 2017 Grafton Cup back in July. He has been relocated to the Chris Waller stables on the Gold Coast and I notice he had a solid trial three weeks ago over the unsuitable distance of 900 metres. I reckon he is worth and each way gamble at $12 in this field.

Selections: 12-5-4-3

**************************************************************************************************

Race 8

Another open race.

Short and sweet here - I like the run of Coral Bay (5) last start at Randwick behind Goodfella. He comes back to Brisbane and I think he gets in well here at some nice odds of $12. The run was four weeks ago and I am certain that Stuart Kendrick will have him freshened to run well here.

Miss Exfactor (3) returned to the winner’s list last start at the Gold Coast when jockey Jim Byrne took the filly to the lead and she held off the late swoopers.

Adoradancer (4) won well last weekend. She is on the quick back up for the Lockwood stables. The way she powered home last weekend I think she will appreciate the step up in distance to 1350 metres.

Selections: 5-3-4-1

***************************************************************************************************

Race 9

The last race on a nice race program – these are just impossible missions each week!

I will be home getting ready for a night out before the starter presses the button to let them go here!

Chamalu (12) looks another nice chance for Matthew McGillivray to finish off the day. He looks like he has a very solid book of rides Saturday and will probably be an outright favourite in the jockeys challenge. This gelding resumed last start at the Sunshine Coast after a 56 week spell - a pretty good training effort from Liam Birchley.

The runner that will race on the speed and could well be difficult to run down is Brotherly Secret (1) who has drawn barrier 1. I am certain that jockey Ronnie Stewart will test this lot, be leading while attempting to run them all into the ground.

Toby Edmonds trains The Amateur (6) who has won his last three starts. He is coming back from a mile to 1350 metres, however, he would have been freshened with a five week break.
