WINNO'S KILCOY KASH FRIDAY 29 DECEMBER 2017

By Darren Winningham | Thursday, December 28, 2017

KILCOY KASH FRIDAY 29 DECEMBER 2017

This week the Kilcoy Race Club has it annual XMAS meeting. We are racing on Friday 29 December with some spectacular weather forecast – so if you want to experience country racing close to the Brisbane and Sunshine Coast areas at its very best I would strongly suggest you get in your car and take the drive to Kilcoy!

The track is currently rated GOOD – the rail in the normal position and the weather is forecasted to be great!

By the way – my theory for this track is if they can lead or they have won here before then they usually do well!

Just a reminder to grab one of the famous Kilcoy Race Club steak burgers – this is the first win you will have once you get to the track!

NB: As this form assessment was made prior to raceday, please check final fields and track conditions for any changes on the day.

*************************************************************************************************

Race 1

We start the day with a small but competitive field of five runners.

I am going with Conspicuous (4) from the Barry Lockwood stable who has been in tremendous form of late. This gelding comes off a nice trial at Doomben back on the 12 December where he showed that he was pretty fit and really did go to the line hard held.

Kilcoy Race Club Chairman, Mr Con Searle, half owns Mister Spinks (2) who on debut at Toowoomba showed that he looks a nice type. This week he steps up outside his maiden class to a benchmark 0-58 ... however, this is not an overly competitive field. The Falvelon gelding is trained by Kevin Kemp and to be ridden by Nozi Tomizawa who rides this Kilcoy circuit very well.

Milly Muncher (3) comes off a nice maiden win at Ipswich. This filly usually races on the speed and is drawn well in barrier 2 and Laura Cheshire takes the ride. She has ridden the filly 3 times for 2 placings.

Selections: 4-2-3-1

Race 2

Again Barry Lockwood has a nice chance here with Odelia (5) who comes off a nice second at the Gold Coast last start and is drawn nicely. Jimmy Orman takes this ride as well – it could be an early race to race double for him with any luck on his side!

Lucky’ Lil Girl (7) raced here on Cannonball Final day in early December and ran a nice second at odds with Jarrod Woodhouse in the saddle. He resumes his association with the mare here and, drawn in barrier 1, should be given the run of the race.

Whilst on the subject of Woodhouse, he was unlucky at the previous meeting as he had a fall in a race preceding the Cannonball Final and was unable to take the mount on Life’s Like That who did win the race. This would have been unique for Jarrod as he would have ridden back to back winners in this race, however, it was not to be. So good luck this week at Kilcoy mate!

The rest of them are very hard to gauge as there are a number of them that are unraced and have no official barrier trial form that I can find. This makes it very difficult to assess them. I would strongly suggest that you keep your eye on the markets to see if anything is well supported in te betting.

Nozi Tomizawa rides a nicely named Statue of Liberty filly for Patrick Sexton – New York Miss - who looks like she can gallop. Maybe she can round out the placings.

The strong Ben Currie stable is represented here with a first starter Hinchinstyle (3) who is to be ridden by Beau Appo. These two have formed a lethal combination in the past 12 months at Toowoomba and this runner should be respected here.

Selections: 5-7-8-3 rough chance 1

**************************************************************************************************

Race 3

One of these super-fast 800 metre sprints at Kilcoy – blink and you may well miss the race!

Another Ben Currie runner here has got my attention – Dispel (3) to be ridden by Skye Bogenhuber (dual acceptor race 6). This Choisir filly has only had two career starts and has a win and a second on her record. The debut run at Toowoomba was very good back in August. I would not be surprised that she races handy here and puts them to the sword.

Almazan (2) is trained by John Dann and won first up at Toowoomba a fortnight ago (it is a dual acceptor in race 6 as well – where it will probably run). He was sent out a short priced favourite and was ridden by the boom apprentice Baylee Nothdurft. He is drawn nicely in barrier 4 and should race on the speed if he takes his spot in the field.

Clout (9) has three placings on the Kilcoy track. This gelding always seems to pull out a nice performance at this track and should not be underrated. I see that Amelia Denby is taking the ride here this week. Now remember Meals ... WINNO’s advice “get to the front and make them catch you.” I think that this Andrew Donnelly trained gelding will be well suited now he is third up this week and could be some nice odds to blow away these more favoured runners!

It is a nice race to start off the Kilcoy Quaddie!

Selections: 3-2-9-4

***************************************************************************************************

Race 4

Talking about the boom apprentice Baylee Nothdurft, he makes his appearance here in this race riding She is Fierce (5) for his boss Lindsay Hatch. This Savabeel mare won nicely last start at the Gold Coast over 1800 metres and she cantered to the line with plenty in hand. This week she steps up to the 1900 metres at Kilcoy. I think she could be too good for these. She is looking for a hat trick of wins as well since resuming from a spell on 2 December. She looks a progressive type that is working well through the grades.

The runner that could be the one to cause an upset is Tobacco Road (3) to be ridden by Jackson Murphy who has been making every post a winner since taking some rides in South East Queensland. This kid can ride!

This Darryl Hansen trained gelding went around last start at Doomben on a “soft” track. I really do not think he enjoyed the conditions and his previous runs on “good” tracks has all been full of merit. I think we the nearly four weeks off between runs and a firm track at Kilcoy we could see an improved performance.

So this race could well be the battle of the apprentices – NSW v QLD – I just had to get that in!

Skylight (6) won well last start at Dalby in similar company, She has never seen the Kilcoy track, however, winning form is good form and she should round out the placings.

Selections: 5-3-6-1

Race 5

This race is very even. Legs Unbarred (4) loves this Kilcoy track and Stephanie Lacy seems to have a wonderful affiliation with the Wendy Bannerot trained mare winning three times on it here at Kilcoy. He latest win at the track was back on November 3 when she took up her customary role of leader and could not be run down. She has struck some wet tracks since then and I really do not think she likes them all that much. This week with a good track – Steph in the saddle and up in grade and down in weight - she looks well placed and difficult to beat.

In that race in November she beat the Ben Currie trained Over The Venture (7) who on face value looked unlucky in the run. She seemed to get too far back and had a checked passage in straight until she finally got clear. Maybe with Baylee Nothdurft taking the ride this week we could see the result reversed? Since that run she has put three consecutive second placings on the board and each time has been well backed – maybe she just finds it difficult to win?

Rising Luck (1) has never run at Kilcoy. Again I think we will see the best of him on a firm track and he gets that this week. Look for Jimmy Orman to stalk the two runners I have mentioned above and bring this Trevor Thomas trained gelding for one crack at them near the winning post.

Our Clarky (5) trained by Bradley Hudson is another runner who loves the Kilcoy circuit. His form of late has been sound and back on a track that suits him and down in the weights – he may sneak a place.

Selections: 4-7-1-5

***************************************************************************************************

Race 6

The last race and the biggest field of the day over 1060 metres!

Almazan (5) is trained by John Dann and won first up at Toowoomba a fortnight ago. He was sent out short priced favourite and was ridden by apprentice Baylee Nothdurft. He is drawn nicely in barrier 4 and should race on the speed if he takes his spot in the field.

Our Rock O’Reilly (15) is trained by Greg Cornish and has winkers on for the first time and this may just make a difference to him this week. This is the runner that Jarrod Woodhouse came off here at the last meeting. On that day he was well supported in the betting and was tracking into the race nicely when misfortune struck and he clipped heels and Jarrod got to taste the turf. I am gambling that we may see a good performance here.

Now I have found a nice roughie for you all to finish the day – Snippet of Hope (18) to be ridden by the comeback kid Jake Hull. He rode this mare first up here at Kilcoy and she was not disgraced when she came from an impossible position on the turn and motored home to be beaten by around 1.8 lengths. Jake rides her again and I think she is a genuine chance at some odds. She is third up and could show something here.

Takes Time (4), from the Lindsay Gough stables, is well drawn here and I think has a tonne of ability. Since resuming he has struck soft tracks and handled them well. Last start at Doomben he was sent out favourite and was ery competitive finishing less than 1 length from the winner. If he takes his place in the field he will be hard to beat!

Selections: 5-15-18-4 rough chance 2

Looks like a true battle between Jimmy Orman and Baylee Nothdurft – and it may all come down to the last race!

Australia Day at Kilcoy – Friday 26 January 2018

A final reminder. If you have no plans for Australia Day the Kilcoy Race Club is hosting its annual Australia Day races.
