WINNO'S WINNERS: DOOMBEN, JANUARY 26

By Darren Winningham | Thursday, January 25, 2018

DOOMBEN RACES, FRIDAY 26 JANUARY 2018 – AUSTRALIA DAY!

Well seems like Australia Day at the races is popular in 2018 with numerous meetings being held across South East Queensland.

I would anticipate a large crowd at the track on Friday at Doomben for the Australia Day meeting that seems to have a solid schedule of races with some nice horses engaged.

The track is rated as “GOOD” – the weather is forecast to be fine and warm.

The rail is out 11 metres the entire course.

With the rail out so far it probably could mean that leaders or runners on the pace could have a distinct advantage. Maybe worthwhile having a look at the first few races to see how the track is playing.

A brief review for you all!

Happy Australia Day – enjoy your day off – BBQ and however else you spend the day!

NB: As this form assessment was made prior to raceday, please check final fields and track conditions for any changes on the day.

***************************************************************************************************

Race 1

Looks like a solid start to the day with the Tony Gollan and Jim Byrne combination combining here with Metis (3) who normally leads in her races and has run second twice in her career starts. Due for a change of luck for mine!

Le Drama (7) is back in class to maiden company – last start he ran well behind Femme Fireball.

Writtinko (5) has led her past two starts and maybe with the rail out so far she may benefit from the pattern of racing if it eventuates.

Selections: 3-7-5-10 rough chance 8

Race 2

Love and Rock It (4) was solid in the Magic Millions maiden on the Gold Coast. This gelding trained by Robert Heathcote looks well placed here and has drawn nicely – I expect a win!

The Lawyer (11) looks like he may object to the Heathcote runner being so short (bad pun sorry). This Sequalo gelding from the Toby Edmonds stable has had three trials and in each one has shown some improvement. He is first up here and has Jeff Lloyd in the saddle.

Selections: 4-11-10-6

****************************************************************************************************

Race 3

Looks another race for a short priced one here – the Stuart Kendrick trained Italia Bella (4) who is still a maiden but wow did she run some wonderful races in Listed and Group races over the Brisbane Winter Carnival. She won a trial easy at the Sunshine Coast three weeks ago with Damian Browne in the saddle I think she is a special!

The Tony Gollan trained Shesees Everything (10) looks the only danger. This filly ran a sensational race in the Magic Millions maiden on the Gold Coast when she was narrowly beaten at $81 in the race. That weekend she drew off the track and again here this week she has fared poorly drawing barrier 16. Jim Byrne will need some luck fro out there.

Selections: 4-10-13-16

***************************************************************************************************

Race 4

Namib (7) looked impressive first up at the Sunshine Coast. The Barry Lockwood trained mare won easy on that occasion and the way she chimed in and went away from the opposition would suggest that the 1660 metres of this race is right up her alley – can she perform second up is my only worry!

Storm Girl (8) from the Heathcote yards is back in grade and up in distance. She looks well placed here and should race on the speed.

Arazona (10) won over the mile at Sunshine Coast last start and raced handy all the way before taking the lead and holding off the challengers from the 400 metre mark. Brad Stewart retains the ride and she could be one at some nice odds to finish the early Quaddie!

Selections: 7-8-10-1

****************************************************************************************************

Race 5

Dream Master (17) resumed at the Gold Coast and won in a nice time and led the entire way. This Toby Edmonds trained gelding had trialled very well prior to that resumption and I think that he will make the grade here. Should be at some nice odds as well around the $5 mark.

Loose Goose (9) and Viceman (2) are from the Matthew Dunn stables at Murwillumbah. They both come off nice wins at their home track on 7 January. I think that Loose Goose (9) was the pick of the wins on the day and as his style of racing is to lead I think he is an obvious danger here.

Viceman (2) is to be ridden by Boris Thornton who broke his duck egg last Saturday for city winners in Brisbane – maybe he can continue on with another win here?

Ben Currie has Dispel (14) and Crusher (15) nominated – they look well in as well and could be a rough chance.

Selections: 17-9-2-3 rough chances 14 & 15

***************************************************************************************************

Race 6

Sorry – not a race to get interested in here.

For the record the Tony Gollan trained High Wind (1) from Montezuma (2) for mine.

It says something when I am tipping a horse that has had 1 win from 37 starts to run second in Montezuma (2).

Selections: 1-2-9-6

****************************************************************************************************

Race 7

Our Story is trained by Billy & Dale Healey – she has drawn well – has a large weight and is first up. She does always perform well fresh and her recent barrier trials would suggest that she is forward for this race. I am just concerned that she will get back and may need some luck with the rail out so far.

For those reasons I am finding it hard to split Mia’s Got Class (5) and Fatal Rendezvous (6) in this race.

Fatal Rendezvous (6) will race handy and on the speed and may get her own way out in front with Tiffani Brooker aboard.

Mia’s Got Class (5) is another runner from the Matthew Dunn yards – maybe they could get a race to race double with any luck with this runner. I think she will enjoy the firm track and the speed on so she looks well placed here as well.

Givus a Cuddle (3) won well in an average time at her home track at Toowoomba – another nice ride for apprentice Boris Thornton for the Ben Currie stables.

Selections: 5-6-3-4 rough chance 1

**************************************************************************************************

Race 8

Dreamscope (1) has been racing consistently for Ben Currie. Apprentice Ruby Ride takes a 2 kilogram claim off this gelding and he should race behind the likely leader Flamin’ Mogul (5).

Real Good (3) doesn’t win out of turn but back in grade here may just pop up in this open field.

Mr Bellagio (8) has been finding the line well in 1200 metre events. Maybe the step up to 1350 metres here may see him flash home late and knock them all out in the last race of the day.

The Edmonds yards are represented by Locus (6) – if the track is damp I think this may improve the chances of this gelding.

Selections: 1-8-6-5 rough chance 3

Jockey Challenge

This could be a battle between the two South African jockeys on Australia day. In the Blue corner we have Robbie Fradd and in the Red corner Jeff Lloyd. I am thinking that BLUE wins – so go Robbie!
