MY CALL: ZOUSTYLE'S OUTSTANDING DEBUT WIN SUGGESTS HE HAS MASSIVE UNDERLYING POTENTIAL

By David Fowler | Tuesday, July 3, 2018

David Fowler is the principal thoroughbred caller for Radio TAB. David, who is a keen form student and punter, has enjoyed a lifetime involvement in the racing media. His personal blog, ‘My Call’, appears exclusively on HRO.

Zoustyle has the potential to be the next Buffering.

Zoustyle can become a trail blazer that Queensland racing urgently needs.

No, I haven't gone mad. I'm deadly serious.

We can only form a judgment on two sightings. His barrier trial win at Eagle Farm on June 12 and his raceday debut at Doomben last Wednesday.

Trials are trials but it's significant to drill down on the Doomben performance.

A smooth beginning, a relaxed action, despite being taken on, en route to the easiest of wins.

But the time of 1:03.45 is the clincher.

While lowering the class record by almost a second is meritorious, these sort of comparisons are sometimes flawed because the sample size is not large.

It's the comparison to Star Of Florida's track record of 1:02.95 where the light should be shone upon.

That 1110m benchmark has stood for 16 years and is rarely rivalled. It's a fair dinkum course record.

Yet Zoustyle's performance of a half second outside of it was done on a soft 6 track. Incredible.

One swallow doesn't make a summer but there hasn't been a more exciting proposition for a long time.

Where will he run next ?

I went into bat for Damian Browne regarding his two month suspension on my Radio TAB PRESS ROOM program on Monday.

My central point was Browne's judgement on the horse's action was effectively ignored by stewards as they handed out the two month sentence.

Not only was his judgement questioned but his integrity was impinged.

I had a colossal amount of correspondence regarding the editorial and my critics raised two points that are worth considering and commenting on.

I was excoriated for not mentioning that subsequent vet checks revealed no abnormalities with the horse Fighting Teo.

I don't question the validity of the checks but in no way does it diminish Browne's concern during the race.

And those who disagreed with me were swift to point out Fighting Teo won at its next start.

I'm glad they brought it up. It further fuels my argument that he did not run to his true ability at the Sunshine Coast when Browne said the only wrong thing he did was not pull the horse out of the race.

To reiterate, Browne's ride was totally out of character. To reiterate, something had to be wrong.

Why was he not believed?

My former journalist colleague Trevor Marshallsea is not a one hit wonder when it comes to book writing.

Marshallsea co-wrote A Long Way from Wyandra...the story on Peter Moody....and has now tapped into the public mood regarding the champion mare Winx.

Winx: Biography of a Champion will be available in a month or two.
