WINNO'S WINNERS: DOOMBEN, JULY 21, 2018

By Darren Winningham | Thursday, July 19, 2018

DOOMBEN RACES SATURDAY 21 JULY 2018

Doomben this week after a fortnight break.

The weather men are saying warm and fine conditions.

A massive nine race program on a Winter’s Saturday. Tattersall’s are sponsoring the day so I am certain there will be large crowds and members at the track.

The track is rated “GOOD” (Thursday afternoon) and the rail will 0.5 metres out the entire course this weekend.

In WINNO NEWS this week …

How good was it to see Zac Purton reign supreme in the 2017-18 jockey’s championship in Hong Kong after the three-year dominance of the “Magic Man” Joao Moriera who is now set to make Japan his new empire. Purton previously won the championship in 2013-14 and now returns to the status of premier rider in Hong Kong!

I have done some research on gambling in Hong Kong for the last season. Look at this!

On the last day of the season turnover was HK$1.938 billion. For the entire 2017-18 season the total is astonishing – a record HK$124.28 billion. his equates to an increase of 5.8% on last season’s total. Amazing!

In other news I must thank the Clarence River Jockey Club (CRJC) for allowing HorseRacingOnly to attend their Carnival this year! The Club and Committee along with the racing participants – jockeys, trainers, strappers and owners - always take time out to make us feel welcome and to let us grab a photo or have a chat.

I must thank you all for allowing Graham and myself to photograph you, from those of you that “posed” for photos, to those who just wanted a photo taken, to those who were such good sports with those spontaneous, unscripted photos, on which HorseRacingOnly’s coverage thrives.

Thank you all very much!

Well it is that time of the week – we are all set to get started … VROOM .. VROOM .. here goes nothing!

NB: As this form assessment was made prior to race-day, please check final fields and track conditions for any changes on the day.

*************************************************************************************************

Race 1

We open the meeting with a 2200 metres race – these races just inspire me every week – NOT!

The same lot of horses seem to go around at this time of the year and decide who is going to put their best hooves forward and win a race!

This is a tough race to assess as most of these have been running on “heavy” tracks recently and they get back to running on top of the ground this weekend.

Mornington (6) is one of these Chris Waller runners that have been sent to the Gold Coast stables. He has had three runs on heavy tracks. I just don’t think this is his cup of tea – so maybe we will see an improved performance this weekend.

High Degree (5) is trained by Rochelle Smith and comes off a solid fourth in the Caloundra Cup last start when she was sent out at $101. Josh Oliver makes an appearance in Brisbane (he is now based in NSW) to ride this mare. I am thinking that form has been solid – but taking $3.60 about this runner could be dangerous.

Shotacross The Bow (7) is one that could show up at odds here. $21 is on offer around the place and I think this Rothesay gelding may just cause an upset. I think he will race better on top of the ground – but he has never won over this longer distance.

Denbern (3) won nearly eight weeks ago at the Gold Coast in a dominant performance over 1800 metres. He has been up and down in distances since that run. He has the services of Ryan Wiggins and, on a good track this weekend, I expect this Scott Morrisey runner to be in the finish!

San Telmo (1) despite being a 7-year-old may turn up as well. He loves this distance – but, sadly, really loves the Eagle Farm track.

Latino Lover (9) comes out of the Grafton Cup a week ago where he was beaten by First Crush. For mine this Ethan Ensby runner requires a wet track, however, Jimmy Orman takes the ride here after resuming from a short spell in Hong Kong. Maybe he can get a change of fortune for this Northern Rivers trainer?

Selections: 3-6-7-5 rough chance 1 & 9

Race 2

This is a two-year-old race over a mile.

Red Stina (10) was beaten last start here by Soaring Heart (1) over 1350 metres. I thought on that day it appeared that leaders had all the favours in the early races – however it was still a dashing display of front riding by Brad Stewart to get the Pat Duff trained Soaring Heart (1) home. This weekend I think that, despite getting back in her races, Red Stina (10), from the Rex Lipp yards in Toowoomba, may enjoy a genuine faster tempo and on a good surface should be able to run the mile right out.

Soaring Heart (1) franked some great consistent placings in winning last start on a heavy track. As I mentioned it was a bold ride by Brad Stewart to get the chocolates. Stewart is currently in great form having saluted in four of his last seven rides going into Friday’s Ipswich meeting where it would be a safe bet to say he will add another winner or two to that list. This runner, now he has found the winner’s stalls, may just go on with it here – he meets a similar field this weekend. He has drawn wide and goes up in weight – they are my only concerns.

Doss (2) will be ridden by Corey Bayliss for the Barry Lockwood team. This Sebring gelding is fourth up this run and I think he will be run well on a good track where he has performed well in the past. Corey’s 3 kilogram will assist the chances of this runner as well.

Miss Quaintly (3) is trained at the Sunshine Coast by David Vandyke. She won on debut when ridden by Jeff Lloyd over 1000 metres. Second up she got through the heavy track well and ran a gallant third behind Soaring Heart (1). Jeff Lloyd is back aboard for this run after his recent holiday in South Africa. She has been well supported in the early markets – so she may just be ready to return to the winner’s stalls this weekend.

Serlina is trained by Billy Healey. This filly Serlina (11) ran a fortnight ago at Grafton over 1410m and led most of the way before being run down late. She gives me the impression that she is looking for the mile. I just hope that they allow her to settle this week and take a sit (WINNO giving trainers and jocks advice now) so we can see the best of her.

On a sad note Billy lost his father last weekend to a short illness. This saddened me as it has done many people in the racing industry. Dale was always jovial and fun to be around – a true gentleman and wonderful ambassador for racing. I would like to take this opportunity on behalf of HRO readers in passing on to Sue and Billy our sincere condolences.

Selections: 10-3-1-2 rough chances 11 & 13

**************************************************************************************************

Race 3

Only a small field of six runners here for the Open sprint – a little disappointing!

Tumbler (3) was scratched last week prior to racing for tearing a shoe which had been glued on and cou;dn’t be replaced. I think this Barry Lockwood trained mare has something in common with Patricia Gesler – she also likes her shoes and wants them to be just right!

Tumbler raced in the WJ Healey stakes last start when a credible second as favourite to Spright. This form has stood up over the Grafton Carnival with Havasay coming out of this race and winning the Ramornie! She gets in super here with the claim for Corey Bayliss – if she wins this will be Corey’s first Saturday metropolitan winner.

The two Ben Currie trained runners must be considered as well – Amanaat (1) who, won the Weetwood back in April, and Apoloboom (5) who won here last start in a BM80. Up in class, he drops remarkably in weight and Jackson Murphy will claim 3 kilograms getting him in with a weight relief that he has probably never run with for 2 years. He meets all his rivals from that race better at the weights in this race.

Take your pick for the rest of them!

Selections: 3-5-2-1

**************************************************************************************************

Race 4

Glitra (2) is trained by the Peter & Will Hulbert team who are having a good run recently.

He was first up at the Sunshine Coast over 1400 metres when beaten by Bluebrook. Since then Bluebrook has come out and won again last weekend. In Glitra’s first run for the stable he raced on the speed and was perfectly rated by Ryan Wiggins. He has won twice second up and a mile should suit. Again, there is value about this runner at the $21 on offer now.

Cedarwood (7) I think resented the heavy conditions last start here over the mile. The Waller trained gelding is well bred and I think being third up here after a short break we may see him breakthrough for his maiden win in QLD. Glen Colless remains in the saddle and he will be placed in the first six in the running.

Balius (6) is a Brad Witt runner from the Gold Coast. Despite never having a run at Doomben in his career he has been very consistent in recent starts over the mile on heavy surfaces so he is a knock out chance.

Pressway (12) is on a short back up after being defeated last week at the Sunshine Coast on a heavy track. Despite finishing second in both of his last two starts I think that a mile will suit the Steven O’Dea runner. It is interesting he has gone with apprentice Jackson Murphy this weekend to get 3 kilograms off. He has a horrendous barrier draw in barrier 18 but I expect Jackson to set him alight from the barriers and take up a forward position in the running.

Arazona (14) is trained by Liam Birchley and Ronnie Stewart take this ride. Ronnie has ridden this mare to a win previously and resumes his association with her. I think that this runner is silly odds at $21. She is second up here and she loves a mile. I think that she is a genuine knock out chance!

Clever Blaze (15) won last start in a midweek race at Ipswich over a mile. On that occasion she was well backed late and Tegan Harrison and the Bevan Laming trained runner prevailed! She is a rough chance as well.

Selections: 14-12-7-2 rough chances 6 & 15

*************************************************************************************************

Race 5

This is a tough race people – there are a fair few early scratchings so the emergencies will make the field.

If they are leading and winning you cannot discount the Tony Gollan runner Ignite the Light (9) who has drawn the rails and will bowl along out in front here. He is beautifully placed with a 3 kilogram claim for Corey Bayliss – maybe he can rate this one in front and run the opposition into the ground.

Tabbing (3) is looking for a hat trick of wins after posting two consecutive wins at Ipswich with Boris Thornton aboard. He probably will sit behind Ignite the Light (9) – however, if they take each other on in front it may prove disaster for both!

If this occurs the Chris Munce runner Hellaroo (15) may be the one to be on. She was dynamic last start at Grafton in a Class 6 plate won by King Lear. I think the form out of that race will be solid and may hold up. In that run she came late to only go under by 1.1 lengths. Jeff Lloyd has been entrusted the ride by Munce this weekend – maybe with the quick back up (9 days) she may break through for her sixth career victory.

Mail Escort (17) from the Tony Sears stables in Toowoomba has been racing in superior races than this. He is only lightly raced with 5 starts for 2 wins and a placing. Despite drawing barrier 16 I think he may just fill a place.

The Desleigh Forster runner Zendaye (7) is not without a hope here. I would forget the run at Rockhampton last start when he was never in the race and there were genuine excuses for the run.

Selections: 9-17-15-3 rough chances 7 and 13

*************************************************************************************************

Race 6

Oriental Runner (7) comes to Brisbane off some Sydney form where he has been racing reliably without much luck. His best form appears to be over the 1200 metres and I am not too sure how he will perform on the Doomben 1350 metres that can be demanding. There has been some solid early market support for this runner and I suppose you cannot ignore that money!

Prioritise (6) is a horse that I just cannot catch! He has run some very good races over this track and distance without much luck. He does prefer firm tracks so he gets his chance this weekend!

In saying that most of these runners have hard luck stories to tell. It is one of those races where you should probably go and grab a late lunch. However, it is our first race of the Quaddie – so we may have to play wide!

Natch (10) is from the Gollan Racing team. He has won his last two races in midweek company and steps up to Saturday grade for the first time. This runner has the services of Brad Stewart who, as I mentioned earlier, is riding in great form presently. These meetings after the Carnival seem to suit the Gollan runners.

Charlie Cat (11) is another horse with many issues. He is now seven and has only had 18 career starts for 5 wins. Last start he was second up on a heavy track at the Sunshine Coast. He really is not a fan of rain affected tracks so it may prove advantageous to rule a line through that run. The way he gets back and flies home late gives me the impression that the 1350 metres will suit him – no jockey declared yet – let’s hope he starts!

Selections: 10-7-6-11 rough chances 1 & 13

**************************************************************************************************

Race 7

I cannot split two runners here - Winter Bride (3), from the Toby Edmonds stables, and Shesees Everything (16), from the Tony Gollan stables.

Winter Bride (3) has been sensational winning two from her three starts since resuming from a spell. Last start on a heavy track she carried 58.5 kilograms and made the opposition look second rate romping away to win by 3 lengths under Jimmy Orman.

She has had 3 weeks to get over that run and she looks like a nice filly, owned and bred by the Segenhoe Thoroughbreds group. She is drawn well again this weekend and I expect Jimmy Orman to be smoking his pipe - (well at least his electronic vaporiser – have I told you that story about the Vaporiser and a trip to Phuket? It can wait for another day!) – before he sets her alight and tries to steal a winning break on what I think is the logical danger in the race - Shesees Everything (16)
.
Shesees Everything (16) has drawn well in barrier 4. She normally will get back in her runs and makes a prevailing surge late. I am not too sure how this track will be racing but, if they can make up ground across the program, she should be included and a genuine contender. Last start she looked like she was hopelessly placed running around 11th at the 400 metres and somehow jockey Matthew McGillivray managed to balance her up and fly down the outside to go away and win in a commanding fashion.

She is second up this weekend and has only ever placed second up. The speed will be present again with horses like her stable mate Miss Exfactor (8) and Sista Act (9) engaged. She goes down in the weights and I think she will be flashing late – but will Jimmy Orman aboard Winter Bride (3) have a cosier run near the lead and be able to sneak away coming into the straight?

It will be a battle of tactics – Orman V McGillivray who will reign supreme?

I am saying a dead heat (I know you think I am a weak bastard!)
.
Easy Beast (1) is a visitor from Melbourne and the Richard Laming stables who won on debut in Queensland at the Gold Coast over 900 metres. He steps up in grade and distance this weekend and on his best form will prove stiff opposition for his rivals here. He generally likes to race forward in the first three and I anticipate that will be the case with Tegan Harrison booked to ride the gelding.

Miss Exfactor (8) was gallant in defeat last start here over 1050 metres when defeated by her stable mate Shesees Everything (16). She was third up in that run and I was concerned about the 58 kilograms she had to carry. This weekend she is down in the weights for that defeat and could run a solid race here with Jim Byrne in the saddle again. She has never missed a pay cheque when Jim Byrne has ridden her (8 starts – 4 wins – 4 placings).

Selections: (3-16)-8-1

***************************************************************************************************

Race 8

Another tough race we must assess.

Italia Bella (16), trained by Stuart Kendrick, has been racing in higher grade races at the Sunshine Coast in her past two starts and on heavy tracks. She hates wet tracks and, on top of the ground this weekend and third up from a spell, she may well cause a major upset in this race.

I think the Steve Tregea runner Rhyming (11) also falls into the same category. I think that she is a better horse on top of the ground and stepping back up to 1350 metres here this weekend she could be placed handy and be difficult to run down.

Looks Live Elvis (9) won a Class 1 race over the Grafton Carnival when he looked like he was not going to win. Somehow Jimmy Orman (who is on again this week) managed to hook him wide and set him alight to win in the final two bounds. I know he is going up in grade here and he is second up – but by jingo did he let down and go away in that race. He is trained by Bryan Dais and I think he may just go on after that win. Grafton Carnival form can and usually does stand up in the coming weeks in Brisbane.

Isla Tristana (8) is from the Matthew Dunn stables. )Since we are talking about Grafton, Matt was awarded the trainer of the Carnival with 3 winners and multiple placings by his large team that he launched at the Carnival). This mare has always had some ability and the stable have always had an opinion of her. She was terrible first up at Ipswich on a soft track – I would overlook that effort and suggest that she may sharply improve here second up in a field like this.

Kubis (4) from the Rob Heathcote stables was well supported first up when he finished second. Despite a poor second up record he has raced well at the distance and track previously and could be a rough chance.

Scallopini (2) won a Class 2 event at Ipswich 3 weeks ago under the urgings of Paul Hammersley. I looked at the video when he finished 2.3 lengths behind Winter Bride (19.5.18) when he was first up and the run was solid. I think that if Winter Bride (race 7 – number 3) posts a victory in the previous race this Steven O’Dea runner will be right in the market and a leading contender to win here.

Selections: 16-2-9-11 rough chances 4 & 8

****************************************************************************************************

Race 9

Our feature race for the day is our last race – THE SKY RACING TATTERSALL’ MILE.

Robert Heathcote is well represented here with a trio of runners. I think his leading two runners in the market, Ruling Dynasty (8) and No Annamossity (9) who both come off last start wins, look serious contenders for the race.

Ruling Dynasty (8) has won his past two starts on soft and heavy tracks. Both times he has sat off the speed before making a solid sprint and winning the race. This runner has gained a new lease on life since Rob has taken over his training. He is around the $9 mark and, for a winner of his past two starts, these are generous odds.

No Annamossity (9) can and will run out the mile. He was ridden well last start by Boris Thornton over 1350 metres. He was only in a small field that day and slayed them. I am not too certain of the depth of that field however, this runner always needs luck in his runs – if he gets the luck he wins – simple!

Sheiswhatsheis (5) returns to her favourite track and distance combination – having won 6 starts here over the mile.

She has struggled in Listed and Group races after posting an exciting all the way win in the Member’s Handicap back in May. If she can get her own way in front and Jeff Lloyd can dictate the race tempo to suit himself, she may be the one to show some improvement.

Princess Posh (6) comes off a win at Doomben over 1350 metres where she carried 60 kilograms on a heavy track. I don’t think she could have been any more impressive with that win and she will be well ridden by Michael Cahill this weekend. Her form on heavy and good surfaces is very good. She is a honest type that will be there for a long way.

If you want to go a little wider and look for some value – Fit For Purpose (14) has been working well in his recent runs. Dale Smith is aboard the Liam Birchley runner and he as posted victories on Saturdays over the past couple of meetings. I ponder that down in the weights and drawn nicely in barrier 2, he will race midfield and should be in the finish when the judge calls a halt.

Contralto (16) is like $71 and is loves the longer distances. I see that Ronnie “Long priced winner” Stewart has been allocated the ride. Just nine days ago she was run down in the Mother’s Gift race at Grafton over 1400 metres. She was only third up that start and she is maybe some value here If you wish to play wide. The winner of that race Romney’s Choice is trained locally by Chris Anderson and he has an opinion of her.
Selections: 6-9-14-8 rough chance 5 & 16

Jockey Challenge

Looks like it is going to be a battle between Matthew McGillivray and maybe Jimmy Orman who has some nice rides. I am going for Matty to win this week! He comes of a 2018 Ramornie winning ride on Havasay and has been riding in great form.

Early Quaddie (races 2 to 5 NSW only)

6,7,10,11 / 3,8,16 / 2,9,11,16 / 6,8,9,14 - cost is $192 to $1

Value Quaddie (races 6 to 9)

6,7,10 / 3,16 / 2,16 / 6,9,14 - cost is $36 to $1

Treble (races 7 to 9)

3,8,16 / 2,9,11,16 / 6,8,9,14 - cost is $48 to $1

Value Treble (races 7 to 9)

3,16 / 2,16 / 6,9,14 - cost is $12 to $1

FLEMO and WINNO had a reasonable weekend in our tipping competition last week at the Sunshine Coast until the last two races made a mess of our day. WINNO keeps on missing out in his last leg of his quaddies each week – maybe he should take the field!
Josh and his wife Gabrielle are still waiting for their birth of their first child – well at the moment when I am writing this. I suppose he can use this as a distraction why WINNO has been cleaning him up the last few weeks!

Good luck and good punting!
