DAZZA'S DARWIN DECLARATIONS, DARWIN, AUGUST 4

DARWIN CUP CARNIVAL – DAY 7 - BET 365 PALMERSTON SPRINT

Day seven of the Darwin Cup Carnival is the Bet 365 Palmerston Sprint Day. The weather is expected to be nice and hot again on Saturday – no rain in sight! The track is rated “GOOD” and the rail is in the true position for the meeting.

Wednesday was a wonderful day for local trainer Jason Manning and Vanessa Arnott who had only 4 runners on the program. Would you believe it they managed to win three of the six races! A wonderful training and riding achievement for them both!

The Darwin Corporate Park Cup was won by the formidable pair of trainer Neil Dyer and jockey Jarrod Todd who the Darwin Cup in 2017. This was Neil Dyer’s first Corporate Cup winner with Neil telling WINNO after the race, “we finally won this race – it has eluded us for years”. In true WINNO form I urged him to hold the Cup above his head in Wimbledon fashion – and he obliged!

NB: As this form assessment was made prior to race-day, please check final fields and track conditions for any changes on the day.

Race 1

Only a small field of seven to start the day off.

Dust ‘N’ Diamonds, trained by Philip Cole and to be ridden by Sairyn Fawke, drops back in grade for this run.

Fawke comes off a win on Wednesday where he took one to the lead and kept them all at bay. He normally races on the speed and I think that Fawke may try to lead and catch them napping.

Sabai Sabai (5) led last start as well when ridden by Wayne Davis (who stays on top today). He has drawn barrier 1 and is likely to surge forward. I think the race is between these two.

I see that Jason Manning and Vanessa Arnott combine again here with Exert (7). After their dominance on Wednesday it may be worth keeping your eye on this one as well. The runners on Wednesday were all well backed.

As I remind you each year – keep your eye on any that firm in the markets on race day – the flow of money can be the secret to these races!

Selections 6-5-7-3

Race 2

The Magic Millions sponsored race – this it too tough for me people!

Ol’ Blue Eyes (7) is my tip only due the fact it has “BLUE” in its name! The rest of them I have no idea – their form is poor.

Toorak Road (5) is back in grade – but really has not been racing that well.

Mighty Mick (4) was sent out at $51 last start and ran a nice second.

Tough race for mine. I may just stand back, and watch Greg Irvine from Magic Millions make his speech and present the trophy!

Selections 7-5-4-3

Race 3

Neil Dyer and Jamie Kah combine here with Latest Bentley (3) who won his maiden here on 14 July then produced a solid run in a 0-58 grade race last weekend. Dyer’s runners normally love the quick back up over the Carnival. I expect this one to be trained to the minute and hard to beat.

The stable mate is Beau Garcon (10) who was unlucky last start when sent out $3.40 favourite with Bobby El-Issa on board. There is a jockey change for this run with Stan Tsaikos taking the ride for the Dyer Racing stables. This may be a unique opportunity for the stable to get a quinella in this race.

Ombromani (4) won here three weeks ago in his last start. He was unwanted in the markets and went around at $11. Wayne Davis is on board again for this assignment – he may just be able to knock up two consecutive wins here.

Selections 3-10-4-1

Race 4

This race is over 1200 metres.

Cunning Moves (4), trained and to be ridden by Carl Spry, comes back from a Class 6 run last start to a BM 0-66. Last start he ran over 1100 metres. I think the distance was too short and he will be better placed over the 1200 metres of this race.

Beleaguer (5) is looking for a hat trick of wins here at the track. He has won both of his last two starts here with jockey Barry Huppatz aboard. He will be competitive here this weekend again.

Niccorossa (8) is trained by Bob Richard and will be ridden by Felicia Bergstrand. This 7-year-old mare won last start here over 1300 metres.

Tea Tree Gully (2) was beaten last start by Sky Muster (1) over 1100 metres – that was too short for him and now, stepping up to 1200 metres this weekend, look out for an improved performance.

Selections 4-5-8-2

*************************************************************************************************

Race 5

A tough maiden over 1200 metres greets us here for the second leg of the Quaddie.

Trystoff (4) is a four-year-old gelding trained by Greg Connor and to be ridden by the visiting Jamie Kah. Last start he was $1.90 favourite over 1100 metres. He was forced wide and just ran out of time to real in the winner. So, stepping back up to 1200 metres he should be difficult to beat.

Neil Dyer has Marymount Lass (8) in this race. She raced in the same race as Trystoff (4) last start and again was powering home late – 1200 metres should suit this runner.

Caitlin’s Angel is a 5-year-old mare having her third career start. Last start she raced well and I think will strip better for that effort.

Selections 4-8-6-3

Race 6 BET 365 Palmerston Sprint 2018

Our feature race on Day 7 of the Darwin Carnival over 1200 metres.

Last year’s winner Niccoco (10) is to be ridden again by Raymond Vigar this year. He won last start at WFA over 1100 metres. I really think that run has topped him off well and he should be well in this race again this year. Can he go back to back wins in the Palmerston – WINNO thinks so!

Neil Dyer and Jarrod Todd are looking for another feature race win with Artic Song (7) who won here over the distance a fortnight ago when he was $11. On that occasion he sat off the speed and then made his presence felt in the final 75 metres and zipped away to win. He will be competitive again here in this feature race.

Ruettiger (3) is from the Richard Laming stables and made his debut here for the stable when a solid third in the race won by Artic Song (7). He worked home nicely and will be competitive.

The favourite is Captain Punch (2) who has won his last two starts here at short prices each time ($1.65).

Selections 10-7-3-2

Race 7

A tough way to finish the day with a race over a mile.
You may want to consider taking the field in your Quaddie and Treble here.

Our Barty (5) improved last start with a good second over the mile – he may be at some odds and could show up here in the last.

Girl Happy (4) loves the track and the mile. Forget the last start run where she really had no luck. If you go on the previous run, where she was solid, and I think she could improve.

The topweight was sent out favourite over 2000 metres in his last start. He had a tough run and may not have seen out the distance. Before that he had won over the mile here at $17 so he could pop up here.

Our Swagman is trained by Neil Dyer and is to be ridden by Sairyn Fawke. He had an improved effort last start here when he ran third over the mile – another chance that could be at odds.

Good luck and good punting!
